Saw these guys at the Troubador back when this album came out. Sat right across the table from one of their biggest fans, Henry Winkler. There was some great music on this album. Jules Shear's "Easy to Begin" was on the album, too.
I also wanted to mention that Jack has done so much songwriting for Johnny Rivers , The Eagles , Glenn Frey (Solo) and so much more. He's made so much money just with song writing royalties , that he truely never has to work again . He pumped out more songs in the 70's and 80's that it would blow your mind !
I truely thank thank Jack and the Funky Kings for allowing Johnny Rivers to cover this song ! Johnny brought it to another level. But don't get me wrong, if it wasn't so beautifully written, Johnny couldn.t have done what he did with it ! The Funky Kings deserve more credit than they get ! Thank u for writing such a beautiful song ! Just ask my wife
I heard this song on my car radio in 1976 (KNX) and thought it was the most beautiful song ever.
I spent the next 30 years looking for a copy (finally got one) I still get a shiver down my spine when his voice breaks on the word "dark" in the third verse. No offense to Mr Rivers (a friend of Jack's) but this version should be the one everyone remembers.
Thanks so much for posting it. Now, everyone send the link to all your friends, so they all know what we do.
Only an old salt would know the motion of the sea as it dances, back and forth with the charm and grace in a song such as this! Thank You for posting a great melody of life!
This Funky Kings album was a perfect record-- every track was terrific. Singing in the Streets and Mattress on the Roof were should have been big hits.
Tempchin's version of Slow Dancing is much better than the cover most people heard on the radio.
Ditto...J Rivers sucked every bit of soul, and passion out of this original gem. It was criminal. Any vocalist or musician would agree. Not a fair world folks.
another pre-conceived notion blown away...better version than what's in my mind..Johnny Rivers?...how's that?

Jules Shear would later have a solo hit in 1985 called "Steady".

Slow Dancing was actually written by Jack Tempchin, who has written songs for the Eagles, Jackson Browne and others.
Jack is a resident of North San Diego County and an old friend. He is a prolific songwritter, Check out his solo stuff.

WOW!
The original version...not the sappy remake by Johnny Rivers that lost all of the passion that this original possessed.
Thank you!

Ditto. Well said. Rivers' version was shallow and sappy compared to this. KNX-FM in Los Angeles used to play this, I always loved the vocals.
