This one of the howlin' worst examples of box office miscasting. No one was prepared to see Steve Martin be a meanie. That, and the fact this dark film was released just before Christmas - Christmas, if you can believe it - and it's no wonder it bombed. Now imagine the original - Bob Hoskins - in the part. Hoskins is an actor no one likes at first , but who grows on you. He would have made the part work.
@skyangel1965 I think you had it in three words - "this dark film." You're right that American audiences were not prepared - but it's the whole thing: Dennis potter's brilliant and brutal vision. The casting, the timing of the release, or any other factors, were mere details. I think Steve Martin does make the part work; the casting is excellent across the board, it's a great film. The audience just wasn't ready for it.
Agreed! This is a totally underrated and wonderful film - start to finish. This scene - done by Vernal Bagneris is incredible on so many levels - pure joy to watch.
Bueno amigo. Gracias/ This movie was a delicious cocktail which appealed to only those with excquisite tastes. This dance scene, and that of Walkens were classic.
No puedo decir que esta película me guste demasiado. Me sobrepasa esa mezcla extraña de drama y comedia. Pero los números musicales son todos geniales y éste es uno de los que más me gusta. No me canso de verlo.
That's an astonishing performance by Vernel Bagneris, BTW. This movie never found its audience but I've remembered it ever since it came out - it really pushed the envelope to surrealism combined with utter realism. It was nominated for 3 Oscars and 3 Golden Globes. Bernadette Peters won a GG for Best Motion Picture Actress - Comedy/Musical.

This movie always reminds me of the Singing Detective Series.

You can rent it at pretty much any movie place I'd think. But, be warned. It is kind of a unpleasant movie and pretty depressing.
