I really liked your commentary on this video and I love this memorial for poor lovely tragic Genie. I agree with you the tone of the song fits its has a slow sad quality even thought those who love their radio head, may not get it I hope the understand the genuinely kind and sweet purpose that you have put to their song. The tragedy and absurdity of the whole situation with her life was something that for folks like me who got degrees in both psychology and philosophy, find dumbfounding.
just defending psychologists such as Curtiss and Rymer seeming as there's a bunch of comments criticising 'tests' performed on Genie. First of all, they were natural observations. there were no independent variables, nothing was done to her. they watched and recorded, all the while taking the utmost care to look after her. the conclusions they drew from what is an extremely rare privation case were for the greater good. to try and treat people as unfortunate as her.
@fantard100 They had a mental illness?:L Not all people who commit crimes have mental illnesses. He probably shot himself out of guilt or because he didn't wanna live anymore because of his rep after genie was found.
its funny how everyone feels sorry for her but then say that her parents are sick fucks who deserve to burn in hell etc... - umm ever thought that they clearly have a mental disorder because no sane person does this? Her father shot himself - do normal people do that?
@arivas713 Her father shot himself in the head because they found her. And her mother asked to take care of her but put her in a foster home because "it was too hard" THAN she tried suing the psychologist who studied Genie...... yeah.

Beautiful girl, terribly sad story. I can't believe someone would do something so evil. I can't believe people DO do things so evil to a poor defenseless innocent beautiful child. She's a brave soul, an inspiration and a lesson to be learned, everyone can gain something from her story and those like her, thank you for posting this, I know a bit late since you posted but the lesson still the same and still as heart wrenching.
she's absolutely beautiful. no child deserves that, ever. if you can't care for your child, adoption is an option. there's always a family out there that can, and WANT, to care for the child.
The word is that Genie has been living for the last twenty years or so in an adult care home somewhere west of Los Angeles. The precise location is unknown, for all the obvious reasons.
@everizza Officially, she disappeared off the map. There's no records of what happened to her you will find due to certain restrictions regarded about giving out information on her while she's still alive. Unofficially, she is 54 and lives in a group home for mentally handicapped adults somewhere in the Los Angeles area. Sadly, Genie has not spoken for many years, but is apparently doing as best as can be expected, although she no longer does her famous "bunny walk" as frequently as she used to.
I hope that they don't make a movie of her after what they did to her. I would also like to add that I think that they are hiding her from certain people who want to exploit her even now. Anyway, just pray for her and her life.
I guess secret about her life now is for her own good, but it would be nice to know she is doing Ok. I wish I could see her face now,she was so beautiful.
@Hopihe37 as far as i can tell no one has replied to you in the six months since asking this question. but, basically, it's not a case of whether or not people care enough to save her. it's all to do with psychological attachment theories and privation. human infants have a critical period during their first couple of years in which they must form an emotional attachment to a primary caregiver that will reciprocate. this is how we learn behaviour. after that window closes impossible to develop.
Such a sad case. It is horrifying to think her father, or anyone for that matter, could have so little love or empathy to do that to an innocent girl. The only thing that saves it from being an entire tragedy for me is knowing how hard her therapists and doctors tried to help her. I've read some of them really bonded with her, not treating her as just an experiment, but instead treating her with love.
I read about her story in one of my classes as a lesson on the effects of Child Abuse. Her story broke my heart and I just came onto the internet to learn more about it. Such a beautiful girl who didnt deserve such pain, neglect and torture. I couldnt hold my tears through out this video.
yes very sad but at least she was saved from being strapped to a potty chair her whole life. she got to have some happiness, to be able to run around a little. I know she was abused at one foster home, then removed. I always wondered if she had someone who loved her later in life, I hope so. Back then abusive/negligent parents had way too many rights, more rights than their children, but thankfully things have improved somewhat due to cases like this.
This story is so sad... and the fact that she was still being abused and mistreated after her release makes this story saddest... I was containing my tears during the whole video!
such a sad case. and unfortunately her brother suffered too, but no one payed attention to him. his father used to beat his testicles with a 1 by 3 inch board just because he was developing sexually. his father didn't want to boy to have any kids. sick motherfucker.
@maeghan1edits Thank you for uploading this beautiful and most touching video. Of course I was familiar with the "Genie" case, but when we dealt with it in linguistic classes it was just an interesting case. I felt a little sorry for the girl who only seemed to be a laboratory rabbit for most people, but it didn't really reach my heart. Your video, together with the song, did!
quoting my A level Psychology textbook: "she was isolated, punished and physically restrained her whole life" what inhumain asshole would do that to a child?
her mother didnt even want to take care of her. she shoved her off to foster care where she got abused. the least she could have done is to make it up to her daughter. she found it "difficult" to take care of her own child.
@rockee77 i agree, but her mother was in no condition to watch out for someone like genie, or susan wiley is her real name. taking care of susan would be like monituring a small child at all times, and her mother was almost completely blind and clearly had issues. foster care was the better choice. but i DO think they should have given her a stable home. not pass her around and abuse her. awful
she was not only depraved from the first twelve years of her life, but from her entire life. she could have achieved so much in her life. no human being, especially a child, deserves this. I hope her father rots in hell and thats what I wish her mother, too. It took that woman twelve years to rescue her child. Weak person or not, a mother should protect her child no matter what.
@rockee77 damn strait the woman never should have got custody back even briefly. No one can break an adults will unless they allow it. The worlds gonna hit, and it's gonna hit hard you can either be tempered or broken. This girl never had a chance and her mom was an accomplice, failure to turn in a crime makes you an accomplice to that crime. Her parents kept her in isolation not just her father. Both parents should have been executed.
Whatever happened to the foster parents that abused her? Don't they screen these people? She should have had the most gentle, loving, patient people they could find.
You're all mad at her dad? People still do that to other people and they'll continue to do so...to a different degree, may be less severe, but it still happens. Don't be mad, just accept the fact that there are people out there who will hurt other people for various reasons and sometimes for no reason at all.
Oh and please forget that "he'll burn in hell". No he won't. If the thought comforts you, go ahead.
I hope her dad is strapped to a potty chair and is burning in hell forever. I hope his soul, if he was born with one, got teared away from his body and all he does is get barked at by demons and stabbed with molten hot forks if he talks. I hope the only time he opens his mouth is when he vomits black tar every few seconds. I hope he is blind and deaf and suffering unimaginable pain.
I hope that is happening right now and I hope that happens to him forever.
It makes me sick to see what type of a world we live in. This beautiful girl didn't do anything wrong yet she was tortured for years and years. And even after she was found they used her for all sorts of tests. How about you just look after her and take care of her like she deserves.
@danibabixx Oh my god, you absolute moron. They were doing ducking tests on her to see if they could CURE her. Because her father locked her away in a room at a very young age because he thought she had psychological problems, her disability was in-forced it was not one she was born with, they did tests to find out if her illness was reversible. After 4 years, she was taken into care by her psychologist.. God what twats, who would try and help her, they should have just left her yeah? moron.
@danibabixx thats bullshit. of course it was an interesting study case from which psychologists could learn a lot about human development, but feral children also need experts to help them. or do you think you put an undeveloped child among other people and in a few years it becomes equal? those children will NEVER be what they could have been for having been deprived from their biologically natural behaviour context. those who know what the child is dealing with should be the ones helping
if i you want to know more about genie and her story look in wikipedia there it still stands i think. im german and in the german version of wikipedia you can read everything. it makes me really sad hearing her story and its heartbreaking to see her.
I watched this video in psychology as well, and I can't believe how ppl could actually do this to their child. Dissability or not, it's your child. I would have never given up on her even after the funding stopped. And I would have taken her in, ppl amaze me. And tat still goes on today..
She just has the look that makes you want to forgive her for anything. She deserved to lead a normal life and have a family, not live for the sake of experiments. Being 53 and living in homes is just sad (~ _~..)-..
I watched this video during my psychology class. I don't understand how parents can be so cruel to their own child; they do not deserve to have this beautiful girl as their offspring, being that they are going to isolate and neglect her and ruin her life. What kind of demented people were they?
@robregD03100282 I guess you could say that Genie was force Autism by they way she was place in extreme isolation. The mother should had been put in the gas chamber for what she did to her daughter.
@studentg00015967 so god was there to stop her from dying eh? why do so many other children die then? no parent should have to bury their own children, so how does he decide which ones to save ?
@leej70 God is a gentlemen. He will not barge into anyone's life. That would not be freewill. If parents want to be cruel, it is their fault a child dies, it is not His. There is no sin without freewill, people can hurt one another, and those children who died, while we may see it as horrible they are no longer alive, I'm sure the children are happy that they no longer have to face the pain and neglect, and that they are loved in heaven.
It is horribly wrong and sick of the parents. Inexcusable
@ArashiNinja12 If god is such an all powerfull being who created the universe and everything blah blah blah, why did he create us all with the capacity to commit such horrendous acts? To test us? For what reason? It just doesn't make any sense.
@leej70 God made us perfect. But you can't have perfection with freewill. God realizes this. (Adam and Eve did evil of their own freewill) Would it be fair to have no choice and to be a puppet bound by the acts of goodness and all that is righteous? No. God gave us a brain and a capacity to think and discover on our own, to believe what we wish to, and to use it, there has to be freewill. Some people use it for wrong, others for right. We just have to love and help everyone we can.
@leej70 I thought we were speaking hypothetically, after all you introduced a deity's existence as truth at the start, so I was just explaining the reasoning behind it.
@ArashiNinja12 Are you mentally ill? I didn't introduce a diety's existence as truth at all, i was replying to someone else's comment so get your fucking facts right before opening your stupid mouth
@leej70 basically, it is a paradox in which we are not programmed to understand. The farthest we can go into understanding any paradox in science and in life (because every deeper concept is full of them) is that it is a paradox. That is as far as our comprehension goes until further evolution and development of the brain.
God gives us the right to choose right or wrong.Jesus died on the cross so we could have forgiveness of our mistake., so not only has god given us the free will to do what we like but he also picks up the messes after we do it. What is repugnant about that. Where was god when it was happening? He was right their with her keeping her from dying by their neglect. It says many places that god is our father, lots of people have bad kids that they have to clean up but they still love them
@DulceRainbow If you are interested in becoming a foster parent there are many different agencies you can go through. You can become a DHR foster parent or you could work with a foster placement agency that deals specifically with children will behavioral/medical issues. The main steps are going to an orientation, getting a background check, having a home safety inspection, and going to some classes offered by the placement agency. Ask around to find out what agencies provide the most support.

Hey dad....Clark Wiley....shouldn't have committed suicide. That guy needed to be locked in a crib with a big horny convict named Bubba who hasn't had any female contact in too long
I saw the story today in a class. Everyone was boring and i was fascinated and sad at the same time. Y love this girl and and i love the way you put all these images on this music
This is one of those stories that makes me overwhelmed with joy to know that God will give her a new body (and a restored mind) when she dies and goes to be with Him.
@leej70 Genie went through suffering so God would be glorified. If Genie hadn't gone through what she went through, I would never have had this chance to tell you God is still good. God loves Genie, and He loves you too. I can say with 100% confidence that Genie will be in Heaven with Jesus when she dies. And maybe, because of what Genie went through, thus giving me the opportunity to witness to you, maybe I will see you in Heaven with Jesus when I die. God is still good.
god was doing the same thing he always been doing, picking up the pieces of the things we break.
What kind of god would god be if he had to do everything, what would be our purposes if he fixed everything and all was well, God will get glory but it wasn't god that made her parents neglect her and treat her that way. What kind of god would god be if he didn't give us the freedom to choose and make mistakes, her parents messed up but god has surely taken care of her, and she is well.

She's really just an adorable person. Even she was recovering, to as much as she could anyways, really quickly. It was an awesome story of inspiration and perseverence.
watching this makes me almost cry. she was so beautiful. it makes me so sad that she didn't have the childhood she deserved. thinking about what could have happened if things ended up different for her makes me a bit hopeful. she could have been so many things, and her parents as selfish and complete dumbasses as they are, they didn't allow her to have a life of her own. it didn't protect her at all. seeing what she had been through makes me so angry that someone would do that to their own child
What her heartless parents put her through is unforgivable. I don't care if her mom was a blind, abused alcoholic, at least she ciuld've screamed at the top of her lungs for help. Genie couldn't even do that. I also wish her brother recovered, must be tough living with the guilt of what happened in his house. Even though she never developed complete speech and was abused even after being "rescued", I hope she finally found genuine happiness and love. fo
@aricept12 he killed himself right before the child abuse trial. and he didn't just abuse Susan (aka Genie). he beat her brother's testicles with a board just because the boy was developing sexually. he didn't want him to have kids.
I had to learn a bit about her when I did child development in psychology, I think both her parents were alcoholics, but still that's no excuse for what they did to her, she was such a beautiful girl.
Thank you, for this video, at the moment I am studying to be a life coach and also learn the teachings of Maria Montessori so that I can help and try my best to secure a happier furture for children . . . thank you once again for sharing. So try i will . . .
@Mokana97 Susan ( her real name) is still alive and now living her 6th adult group home, it is unfortunate but she no longer speaks again.. such a sad story i had not heard of until i studied her in my linguistics class this year.. makes u just want to hug her
I just saw the movie Mocking bird don't sing on netflix, which was based on Genie's story. It was heartbreaking and now watching this video. ugh. I've actually never heard of her story. And now I just cant stop learning about it.
I just can't believe some parents can actually do that to their children.
props to you maeghan for putting this piece together. well done. Thanks for the titles of the other documentaries, now i can watch the rest.
@mSPaggy Me too. It took me forever to watch the movie...meaning, I've bypassed it so many times and today, I finally decided to watch it. Now, I'm doing all this "research."
I just finished watching Secret of the Wild Child and it informs me that her mother was 'nearly' blind, not actually blind. Also that her father shot and killed himself 'after' social workers have found out about Genie. Moreover, it was the father who apparently decided that Genie was retarded and decided to lock her up in the room.
Her mother up until she was 3 or so had been taking her to doctor visits & she was on target to be a totally healthy normal little girl. It was the father who did this to her & the mother. The mother protected her the best she could. It was the mother who "wandered" into a social services offices (the mother was blind) & they noticed Genie & her issues...best day of Genie's life to be honest. When the father found out, he killed. Saved the taxpayers a lot of money on a trail, imo. Great vid
@GingaSlappa1 it wasnt that at all....her mother was blind her father was dead she lived with her grandparents and her grandfather did this she didnt learn to talk not only because of absoloute isolation but also because her grandfather was a mute. i just saw this whole documentary on it.
Wasn't there a movie made about her? If she truely was abused [I'm only going from what I've seen and heard, never truely researched] one can only wonder how someone could do such a thing to a child. Such a beautiful girl. The horrific workings of people will never cease to amaze and disgust me.
@sprinklefriend *hugs* to you and all of those who have been abused. I cannot express how much sadness and anger I feel because of it. It seems to be more common in some form than people know. I think that's the part that upsets me the most. But as they say, one child abused is one too many.
All of those brave enough to carry on and to not be ashamed of the past. You are an inspiration.
@fairyspectre thank you for leaving such a kind & supportive comment. :-) it really does lift my spirits. i'd never have survived if it wasn't for Jesus... and i mean i literally physically wouldn't have survived, as well as mentally & emotionally. He deserves all the glory.
if i have your word that you will not post the address/link anywhere, i'd be happy to give you my blog address. it is NOT only about my past, but there are posts on it with more of the story.
The researchers (The Rigler Couple) didnt lose custody, they wer studyin her for 4 years but hadnt actually adopted her, then they lost their funding so gave Genie back to the care home and although she had made a little progress once she was sent bak she went downhill again.
I am study the case of Genie in psychology as part of Privation
@xxxBlondieBoyxxx I think a lot of these stories abotu what happened behind the sceans is word of mouth and can't really be confirmed. I learned about this case in a developmental psychology course for a psychology minor at Acadia University.
The foster parents were also researchers in some instances and were pretty bad themselves. One scolded her very sternly for throwing up once when she was making progression speaking and she became afraid to even open her mouth. They lost custody of her then lost funding.
@timmyg316 The Rigler couple are the researchers who had her at their home, however they didnt lose custody as they hadn't adopted her, it was purely for research, Genie made slight progress, then they lost their funding and sent her back to the carehomec and she went downhill again. I am studying Genies case in Psychology at college to do with deprevation. The riglers didnt harm her at all.
She was believed to have developmental deficits as suggested by her family physician prior to the isolation. I wonder how much that impacted her ability to learn.
Dr. Jay Shurley, one of the group who had studied her, showed Rymer two disturbing photographs of "a large, bumbling woman with a facial expression of cowlike incomprehension". Of the second photograph, Shurley said:
"Her twenty-seventh birthday party...I was there, and then I saw her again when she was twenty-nine, and she still looked miserable. She looked to me like a chronically institutionalized person. It was heartbreaking She looks demented".
In a way, the scientists did all they could for her, but ultimately failed in teaching her morals and caring for her, which is what i personally think is more important.
After they cut off all communication, and Genie was put in an Adult care home, all her teachings went away.
Now, she is in her 50's, in an "un-desclosed location in California." She no longer uses any language what so ever, and solely depends on the help of her care takers. The world fucked her over. And she was so pretty.
I suspect the world takes feral children as novelties - creatures of fascination, like some kind of live freak show. Once the novelty goes away the world could care less for them - they could die and end up in some freak accident and it's none of their business except for newspapers headlines that could help earn more money.
hearing her story I took it to heart and made me realize how lucky we are made me applicate what we have, if it was up to me I would love her and care for her and let her know that everything will be alright
We were watching a video about her in psych class and i couldnt help crying, i mean is sad to be isolated, like one of the doctor working with her said, isolation is the most diabolic punishment someone can have, as foxandrabbit wrote this is heart breaking.
How the fuck does this shit happen? How?!? People are the worst I tell ya.

I read about her story in one of my classes as a lesson on the effects of Child Abuse. Her story broke my heart and I just came onto the internet to learn more about it. Such a beautiful girl who didnt deserve such pain, neglect and torture. I couldnt hold my tears through out this video.
katemansar95 11 months ago 3
yes very sad but at least she was saved from being strapped to a potty chair her whole life. she got to have some happiness, to be able to run around a little. I know she was abused at one foster home, then removed. I always wondered if she had someone who loved her later in life, I hope so. Back then abusive/negligent parents had way too many rights, more rights than their children, but thankfully things have improved somewhat due to cases like this.

quoting my A level Psychology textbook: "she was isolated, punished and physically restrained her whole life" what inhumain asshole would do that to a child?
123enigma456 1 year ago
her mother didnt even want to take care of her. she shoved her off to foster care where she got abused. the least she could have done is to make it up to her daughter. she found it "difficult" to take care of her own child.
rockee77 1 year ago
@rockee77 i agree, but her mother was in no condition to watch out for someone like genie, or susan wiley is her real name. taking care of susan would be like monituring a small child at all times, and her mother was almost completely blind and clearly had issues. foster care was the better choice. but i DO think they should have given her a stable home. not pass her around and abuse her. awful
xBadGirlBeautyx 1 year ago 2
she was not only depraved from the first twelve years of her life, but from her entire life. she could have achieved so much in her life. no human being, especially a child, deserves this. I hope her father rots in hell and thats what I wish her mother, too. It took that woman twelve years to rescue her child. Weak person or not, a mother should protect her child no matter what.
rockee77 1 year ago 2
@rockee77 damn strait the woman never should have got custody back even briefly. No one can break an adults will unless they allow it. The worlds gonna hit, and it's gonna hit hard you can either be tempered or broken. This girl never had a chance and her mom was an accomplice, failure to turn in a crime makes you an accomplice to that crime. Her parents kept her in isolation not just her father. Both parents should have been executed.
Outlawzero 1 year ago
Whatever happened to the foster parents that abused her? Don't they screen these people? She should have had the most gentle, loving, patient people they could find.
I wish I could have been a foster parent to her.
okla1959 1 year ago 2
You're all mad at her dad? People still do that to other people and they'll continue to do so...to a different degree, may be less severe, but it still happens. Don't be mad, just accept the fact that there are people out there who will hurt other people for various reasons and sometimes for no reason at all.
Oh and please forget that "he'll burn in hell". No he won't. If the thought comforts you, go ahead.
menegox 1 year ago

How about you just look after her and take care of her like she deserves.
danibabixx 1 year ago 21
@danibabixx Oh my god, you absolute moron. They were doing ducking tests on her to see if they could CURE her. Because her father locked her away in a room at a very young age because he thought she had psychological problems, her disability was in-forced it was not one she was born with, they did tests to find out if her illness was reversible. After 4 years, she was taken into care by her psychologist.. God what twats, who would try and help her, they should have just left her yeah? moron.
scoutamelia 4 months ago
@danibabixx thats bullshit. of course it was an interesting study case from which psychologists could learn a lot about human development, but feral children also need experts to help them. or do you think you put an undeveloped child among other people and in a few years it becomes equal? those children will NEVER be what they could have been for having been deprived from their biologically natural behaviour context. those who know what the child is dealing with should be the ones helping

leej70 1 year ago 4

It just doesn't make any sense.
leej70 1 year ago
@leej70 God made us perfect. But you can't have perfection with freewill. God realizes this. (Adam and Eve did evil of their own freewill) Would it be fair to have no choice and to be a puppet bound by the acts of goodness and all that is righteous? No. God gave us a brain and a capacity to think and discover on our own, to believe what we wish to, and to use it, there has to be freewill. Some people use it for wrong, others for right. We just have to love and help everyone we can.

@leej70 basically, it is a paradox in which we are not programmed to understand. The farthest we can go into understanding any paradox in science and in life (because every deeper concept is full of them) is that it is a paradox. That is as far as our comprehension goes until further evolution and development of the brain.

I just finished watching Secret of the Wild Child and it informs me that her mother was 'nearly' blind, not actually blind. It was the mother who "wandered" into a social services offices (the mother was blind) & they noticed Genie & her issues...best day of Genie's life to be honest. When the father found out, he killed. After researching i found this:
It was heartbreaking She looks demented".
gfreemanification 1 year ago
In a way, the scientists did all they could for her, but ultimately failed in teaching her morals and caring for her, which is what i personally think is more important.
After they cut off all communication, and Genie was put in an Adult care home, all her teachings went away.
Now, she is in her 50's, in an "un-desclosed location in California." She no longer uses any language what so ever, and solely depends on the help of her care takers. The world fucked her over. And she was so pretty.
gfreemanification 1 year ago 3
I suspect the world takes feral children as novelties - creatures of fascination, like some kind of live freak show. Once the novelty goes away the world could care less for them - they could die and end up in some freak accident and it's none of their business except for newspapers headlines that could help earn more money.
