  • I have an over excited horse, and when I try canter, she has a more forward going canter, but its like shes jumping over and over in a gallop pace, how can I control her since she goes too fast and bouncy, I always loose my balance :L

  • I'm going to try this next time I go see my horse. I get nervous when cantering just thinking he might slip or something...It definitely does feel faster than it actually is though, which is why I get nervous...thanks for this video clip!

  • And I was on Zero ( one of my three horses ) :33 we had fun bad news is tht she went for a jump and got thrown off Komei ( her pony ) and landed in mud :p HA tht gave me a laugh

  • Yea I remember showing my lil sister how to canter on her pony :p

  • @horse4479 I live in Scotland.

  • @thetimetells He is an amazing rider, but he's just a bad instructor...

  • you cute robyn10

  • hey cute robyn10 i am going to free wind farms to ride i am still thinking about it go there where do you live maybe go

  • Can someone help me? I'm going to a riding holiday. I watched some videos about it and when I see the people there getting their horse to canter, they use both legs? I haven't been riding since the start of December because of the christmas and new year holidays and my instructor isn't very good so I only go out hacking (I don't get lessons). I've still to master the canter but I'm getting confused on which leg to use? The outside leg she says, but other people use both. I work with lazy horses.

  • @CuteRobyn10 Tried answering your question, check your inbox. :)

  • I think she's also did some other horse back riding videos

  • That lady DOES have a nice sitting trot. And a nice canter

  • i go tin park stables

  • what's the difference between a sitting and a posting trot? why would u want to do a sitting trot anyways? posting trot would be alot easier for your horse, wouldn't it? sorry, I'm new at horses.

  • When you watch someone else riding, it looks slow and easy, but when you're the one actually riding it's a bumpy, fast road sometimes.. I can barely sit-trot on a big horse, it's easier for me on smaller ponies to sit-trot but their canter is much bouncier.. hehe. I think this is hard, wait till I go onto jumping!

  • @CuteRobyn10 Jumping isn't too bad. small jumps are super easier just wait till you work you way up to 2'3". Then you really need balance or you will fall.(i would know from falling off a huger horse due to no balance). But if you master the canter and have good balance jumping will get easier.

  • Wow, this video actually helped me to MAKE my horse canter! Haha, i used to kicked with both legs in the wrong place and this video has taught me not to (:

  • Any tips?

  • @reallyloooovehorses Did you even watch the video? Well, if you have she'll tell you but for tips: *Rock with your horse on the saddle *Keep your back up straight and lean back a little while rocking back and forth *Make noises or repeat a word to push the horse to canter as long as you need it to *Before telling your horse to 'wo'; tell them 'steady' then 'wo'. *Stay relaxed and let your legs loosen a bit while rocking on the saddle, stiffening up will just make it harder..

    That's it :P

  • @reallyloooovehorses With what?

  • It is so hard to me to MAKE the horse to canter because sometimes the horse will just trot realy fast even when I kick him or squeeze with my legs

  • Very nicely done!

  • If you have an instructor pushing you to canter, making you feel rushed and nervous because you can't pick it up -- break to a walk and breathe, relax your legs and tell your instructor you need to calm down. The more they push you, the more anxious you get, the worse the transition, the faster the canter, and the more you bunch up. When you are in a lax environment like this chick is, you get amazing canters. :3

  • @TheTimeTells Same with me, my old instructor rushed me into it and I could barely sit-trot! Plus, the horse I was riding is really old (It's retiring this year) and could barely canter for 1 minute so it was hard for me, and I'm always thinking it was my fault..

  • @CuteRobyn10 No, that isn't your fault in the least. Your instructor needs to know what horses they're putting their riders on. Glad you dropped that instructor or whatever, they sound incompetent.

  • I DON'T LIKE TO CANTER I CAN DO IT IT JUST SCARES THE CRAP OUTTA NE

  • @horseops Well.. The canter is soo much fun but you obviously have no confidence in horse riding, so instead of learning how to canter, learn how to boost your confidence because the horse will know if your scared/nervous, and they will also get nervous.

  • Reliable advice!

  • i dont even have a horse!! BUT I WANT ONE SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BAD!! [i dont think im ever gonna get one :{ }

  • @wolfsrule100 You don't need your own horse to enjoy horse riding? You can join a horse riding school and some let you help out and learn how to take care of horse

  • @CuteRobyn10 We dont have any riding schools anywhere near us but a neighbor has been letting me feed and pet his horses.

  • To those who are afraid of falling of only one sugestion: dont be afraid! If youre afraid than your muscles are a bot squeezed and horse feeles it and when you give him a command and think like "GOD! I DONT WANT TO FALL! PLEASE!" horse wil NOT understand what you want, and depends on a horse he can do WHATEVER he thinks youre ascing him to do. Some horses may get scared of it and run VERY VERY FAST, and then you can fall out.

If youre still afraid or your horse is really agressive, keep your to

  • You all who have got any problems with canter. You nee to hold your legs as in trott but you need to drag your outer leg by the side ofthe horse and keep your inside leg as ussual.

You need to catch the rhytm of the horses movement or nothing will happen. Dont worry if you cant do it quikly, someimes it's hard to understand the horse, also some horses have really hard movement so even if you will feel him you could fly in the saddle. Try to feel the horses movement and repeat them wih your hip

  • I really need help with my Canter! I have only just started watching these video's and I haven' tried it yet, my bum keeps coming out of the saddle! What do I do with my legs- do I wrap them tightly around the horse or just keep them like a trot? Please Help Me!!!! Do I grip some of the mane as well? I am only a beginner- but i really want to do good!! HELP!!!

  • It looks easy, but it really isnt. when i canter, i fly about in the saddle, hold on for dear life and pray i dont fall off. Also it hurts my back, and I feel so bad for the horse as im slamming down on its back. I cant follow their movement! cantering is so hard! any tips people?!

  • Remember to keep your heels down!!!!! Biggest mistake people make! When you're cantering in an english saddle ALWAYS keep your heels down, and hold on with your calf an inner thigh. You also squeese with both legs, but have the outside leg back! And if that's still not working lift your inside rein UP and tighten the outside rein!(:

  • That horse has beautiful movement!! Thumbs up!!!!

  • @YouCanFallMe12 ya im stupid..ik that its not easy..ive done and and i fell off.

  • Goood video ,and horse is super (Y)

  • they make it look sooooo easy!!!

  • finally, a way better heathier horse and a great teacher with the best horse ever :) cantering looks very easy...but i still am afriad i might fall off :(

  • Great vid! BUT I wish people put more emphasis on voice control when dealing with beginners, telling a beginner to squeeze with the out side leg means kick because the horse wont listen to you tohersiwe. Telling them to sit and say canter will result in a canter no matter where their legs are, teaching them the horse doesn't need to be kicked all the time

  • It really depends on the horse:) At first its only easy when you get a smooth hore to rode.. then quite quickly you get used to it and sit into your saddle because your more relaxed.

  • You mean, I should keep my outside leg at the back so that the horse will keep on cantering?

  • it feels so much faster than it looks.

  • i found that when i canter its all bumpy and hurts my back. any tips? also i always lose my balance :P

  • @HerroPooh if you're bumping around up there, ask your instructor for tips on how to adjust your seat. Also, stay relaxed! I had a hard time keeping my butt in the saddle at first (waaaay back in the day lol) and the more I'd bounce, the tenser my legs got trying to compensate, which made it worse. The good news is that as soon as you "get" how to sit a canter correctly, it gets really easy really fast; the hardest part is getting there :)

  • Hi, I've been riding for about 7 or 8 months (1hr lesson on saturdays) and I finally have a video up of my riding, I was wondering if anyone would like to comment and tell me if I'm doing things wrong and how to fix them. It would be really helpful ^-^ Just check out the ONLY horse video on my channel, it's named 'Cantering' Thanks again!

  • GOOD that is a really good canter and its ok if u shorten ur reins just a little it will help you be in more control:)

  • she makes it look so easy.

  • my horse bolts when i ask her to canter. help??

  • thanks for maakeing this it was really helpful

  • an ad on a 1 min instructional video? so lame.

  • how do you make a canter slow like that !!!!! my horse practically runs when shes cantering 0.0

  • I just learned how to trot walk and canter 3 years ago. I can still do it thank you

  • Cantering is not as easy as it looks trust me

  • i just started learning canter in my horse/pony riding lessons

  • I wish my sitting trot would be as amazing....

  • @TheMJJay I dunno if I look that way, but I feel like i'm bouncing everywhere and too high

  • @jessyrulz94 same here... well it's getting better everytime :)

  • Anyone please help me to canter, the last time i done it i fell off and landed on my face please i need some advise bcause i cant not go anymore because i have a rented pony. Please help me im too scared ;'(

  • @Supermadnessgirl better thing i had the same fear. Just kick her or him and grab the reins

  • Can anyone help me? Whenever I ask my mare to canter, she throws her head in the air before cantering normally. Why does she do it? Thanks.

  • @bearbearbethany Take the reins and give pressure to you mare :)

  • @Msmusicca I'm going to hack her out tomorrow, so I'll give it a try. Thanks.

  • @Msmusicca Tried it and it worked quite well until she got spooked and threw me off. :p

  • @bearbearbethany sorry...

  • @Msmusicca Why are you sorry? It wasn't your fault I got thrown off. :p

  • @bearbearbethany OkAy ...

  • this lady has an AMAZING sitting trot! Thumbs up!

  • I CANT CANTER IM TO scared PLZ HELP ME EXPERT VILLAGE!!

  • @jazzylove1997 its really easy! and really fun, you will love it. just relax, and enjoy yourself. you will do wonderfull.

  • @jazzylove1997 Grab the reins ... and don't be scared... It feels like our horses head is going up and down so easy!

  • @Jamaf2 You loosen up ur legs by not hugging the horse. Just go with the flow. You should squeeze if your horse is old or lazy. Dont hug with ur legs because it causes you to lean forward and if the horse stop short, youll fall.

  • Comment removed

  • @edina3 Maybe you should wear spurs to keep him at a canter so your not constantly focased on squeezing foward. When you have on your spurs keep your heel along is side and poke him if you feel he's slowing down or about to break. And if all else fails lengthen lengthen your sturrips a hole ot two to really help you stretch into your heels

  • Hello everyone, can someone please tell me why i cant keep my heels down when i canter? My trainer tells me that i need to keep the leg pressure on the horse that i ride (becuase he tends to slow down into a trot if I dont keep the leg pressure on in the canter position). I found it really hard to push my heels down while i squeeze my calves. So my feet (especially my left foot) is falling in an out of the stirrup. Thank you

  • i am currently taking lessons and every time that i'm cantering i bounce up and down in the saddle, eventhough i squeeze with my calfs... please, anyone, give me some tips on how to prevent bouncing up and down in the saddle :)

  • @LDloveshorses You don't want to be gripping with your legs. Let your seat follow the horse's movement and basically go with the flow. Being tense will just make it bouncier.

  • @BAMitsMOI31 thank you sooo much!!! :D

  • @LDloveshorses you gotta bounce up an down in a pattern so don't go as fast as the horse makes you bounce just go up and down not to fast but not to slow.

  • @ThePgunner thank you!!! :D

  • okay- thanks! I always post trot into a canter which is probably my bouncing seat prob....

  • love ur horse it is the best and ur canter is very good!

  • Hi! I was wondering, when i canter i pull the horses reins up is your butt supposed to leave the saddle?

  • notice at 1:12 the words on the bottom say blocking and trottting when its supposed to say walking!

  • I didnt know americans used the reins to slow down? Why might i ask?

  • i am learning to ride....cantering can take time, just be patient and feel the rhythm of the horse :D xx..........................and never give up xx

  • I fell off a horse when barely cantering. Now I gotten scared a little to canter. I'm trying to gain my confidence back. So if anyone has any tips I'd really appreciate it.

  • The first time i went on a horse i did a sitting trot on english saddle...it wasnt that hard, but i know some people need to practicr there balance with the sitting trot so it might take longer for some people

  • This is just for people who say this look easy.. Trust me its not... Losening up, and kepping ur balance makes it pretty hard... The horse seems to go faster too

  • @Candycorn253 i used to ride horses. its funny cuz now im a football and baseball player. and this is wayyyyy easier than the sports i play now

  • @Candycorn253 Maybe it was hard for you but other people might think differently, if say stuff like that it gives a message that horseriding isnt fun, when it is probably the best experience ever. Just saying.

  • Previous comment by mistake

    Really good lesson

  • Ddd

  • lol. good for beginners :)

  • do you mind if i use some of your videos for a little videoo?! i can send the video link to you afterwards?

  • I know this might sound stupid but , when ever i canter my feet fall out of the sturrups. How can i prevent this? or is it that I am too short?

  • @quarterhorseSiri you need to keep your heels down at all times in the stirrups...this helps alot :)

You can try practicing standing up in the saddle, while keeping your feet heels down in the stirrups and do it many times as you can until youre used to it ;) it will improve trust me cuz i had the same problem when i first started out riding...Hoped this helped :)

  • @MizzMickieJames Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!! i am actually going to ride today and will try it out! thatnks so much for your help and i will tell u if it helps!!!!!!!!!!!!THANKS!:D

  • @quarterhorseSiri It happens to me all the time! What helped me was, holding more with my knee's, and then putting my heel down, and just sit back and relax.

  • @HorsesRLifee Glad to here it happens to other people!!!! I will definatly try that next time I ride my horse:D thankds for the help!! really thanks you alot!!!!!!!

  • @quarterhorseSiri No Problem!!! Always happy to help!! Subb? I'll sub back:)

  • @HorsesRLifee Definatly!!!!!!!!!!:D

  • @HorsesRLifee I do that too! It helps much. If I don't, I fall out of the stirrups and I go into panic mode xD

  • LOL I CANT EVEN TROT RIGHT UR AMAZIN!

  • Hy! i'm C from England and well i might be getting a horse but whenever i canter i tighten up my leg mucsles and bounce a bit like a chicken on a tractor.. how do i stop this and how do i trust myself to loosen my legs a little bit, i will watch this video many times i hope it works. =))

  • @poppyisthebest1 to sit to the canter relax your knees. Trust me, it may feel like you're going to fall off but this will deepen your seat. Now rock your hips in the direction of your horses' back, if your horse has long strides you will need to do this slower, if you have a pony with short strides you will need to do it faster. Remember to sit back! - if you are nervous about doing this get a lunge lesson so the only thing you're thinking about is your position, not controlling your horse.

  • how do u get your horse to trot slowly my a mad nut a cant even do sitting trot because ill fall of i can only do a rising and standing?

  • This is great advice... thanks so much ...

  • Omg you have my dream horse! Beautiful!

  • THANK U 4 POSTNG! THIS HELPED ALOT!!!

  • I need help! My horse is voice-trained, but his canter is still quite rocky. Especially the transition. It feels like I'm going to fall off! I've cantered before on a different horse and I loved it! But now I dread it! How can I keep calm and comfortable? Thanks!!!!

  • thank you all for your help

  • i love cantering, but the transition is not fun...

  • for english riding do you have to lean farther forward than western?

  • @HorsieRider125 no, please don't lean forward :)

  • I luv cantering cuz I watched this video so many times and I got the idea she was showing everyone! Thanks Expertvillage.

  • They should do an expert village on how to blend these things into glue so that they are actually useful.

  • This is very helpfull!! thankyou!!!

  • that helps me so much thanks you!

  • There are two different canters, the collected, which she demonstrates well here and the working. The collected canter is easy to do, keep your seat position straight but let the horse rock you back a forth, this horse has more of a rocking horse canter. Just work with the canter your horse gives you.I found it easier than trotting and dosent strain my muscles so much. The working canter can be much harder and its best to be confident in the collected before doing the working canter. Have fun :)

  • I get freaked out doing cantering because I fell off Goggles and I lost my confidence! I really need to start getting my confidence back. Btw you are a great canterer!

  • is cantering harder than trotting? because trotting is up, down, up down, but cantering is a rocking motion. which is harder? (i know cantering is faster)

  • @KookieKittie2 it depends on your own opinion. when you canter you are going faster but if you sit and rock with your horse its alot more comfortable than the trot. once you learn the canter good and do it without stirups youll see how comfortable cantering really can be. with time you become more and more comfortable at cantering until it will be just like sitting on a couch. i love to canter more than anything.. but like i said its all personal opinion on which is easier

  • @1Girl1Horse1Dream Okay, thanks. :D

  • I learned how to canter by jumping. xD My horse would come off the crossrails at a canter and I just kept with it

  • thank you! thank you! thank you!

  • I still dont understand!! Errrrr I have to learn soon!

  • @2309Lisa Thanks for your help I tried trotting with one stirrup and that helped too :)

  • @xTheEquestrian

I had this problem too. You need to learn to bring the trot back to a slower trot, then ask for the canter. Many horses (especially if they are young), get a bit confused, trot faster and then cannot collect themselves enough to change into the canter gait. Good luck

  • This is just a recent thing, but now whenenver I bring my outside leg back, my heels go up. And because of this I lose my stirrup and I stop adding pressure on the horse and he stops cantering. Any tips on keeping my heels down in a canter and keeping him cantering? Also, do you keep your outside leg back the whole time? Thanks, and please reply!

  • thanks

  • Now i know how to canter

  • is there no such thing as post canter?? Like do you post also for canter of only for trot and walk?

  • @bellahorse151

    Trotting(:

  • @bellahorse151 if you do that then you are more than likely to make the horse trot because if you start posting he/she thinks you want a trot. there is a hand gallop which is a two point canter

  • @bellahorse151 No, there is no such thing as a posting canter. For canter all you want to do is lean back and sit, but there is a collected canter. You can canter in a 2-point position, which is called half seating.

  • @bellahorse151 you only post at trot, not walk or canter

  • hello! My name is Marianna and i'm from Greece.

I went to horse riding club a month ago and my trainer thought that he has already learned me how to canter. I told him that i didn't now how to canter and that he didn't learned me how and he didn't believed me!!!!!! At last i cantered my horse very easy and right because i saw this video 20 times!!!!!!!Thank you expert village!!!!!

  • @mygreathorse

Well remember is you don't trust urself I wouldn't do it unless u have all confidence that ur trainer would do best for you

  • I am going riding next week and i haven't ridden for months. What's worse, loads of people are going to be there from school and my maths teacher is in the same lesson as me. (Don't know how that happened!) I have owned horses all my life, but since we recently lost our grazing, I have to rely on the odd riding lesson. I have done a lot of cantering, just not in a while. :) Thanks for the help. Your mare is gorgeous!

  • Lolz...the first time cantered i fell on me face :O My horse Lovey is really tall FML.

  • @HorsesOwn913 do u ride at meadowlarke

  • how do you make ur legs loosen up. When ever I canter my legs become very tight. Please answer thx. P.S. I love the horse ur riding.

  • @Jamaf2 try leaning back a bit more....usually this happens cause you feel like ur gonna fall off but leaning back will help and just relax maybe adjust ur strriups

  • @Jamaf2 mine do the same, and it bounces me out of the saddle quite bad!! i had a go at riding with no stirrups for a month and after i had a great seat! :))

  • @Jamaf2 I find that your legs will loosen the more to canter. My legs used to be really tight and I'd bob around like a jackhammer. Now ive cantered a lot my legs are loose.

  • @Jamaf2 that's just tension you were feeling... as you get more relaxed about it your legs will relax... as Sally Swift says "ride with your bones, not your muscles " ;)

  • Comment removed

  • @Jamaf2 practice without stirrups :)

  • @Jamaf2 I know how mabey ur holding on with ur heels your heels dont touch the horse unless ur kicking the horse or ur squeezing the horse (:

  • Your Good i am just learning how to canter again because i stopt rideing because the hourse i had was getting too small lol and i had to sell him but ive got a new one (cob) and i was just wondering if i could still canter so i looked on yt to see if i did it right lol great vid thanx it was lots of help :)) (bet ya thinking u carnt 4 get how to canter)

(Please No One Critisize Me) xx

  • @LittleBpcLass

Sorry, this is killing me ><

    *you're *horse *can't

  • Hiya,Good Video,I Can Trot Walk And Canter And Jump,But My Problem Is Sitting In My Seat/Saddel And Even With My Riens Forword And Correct Posture I Still Bounce Around Like A Monkey Any Advice-PS,I Am 12

  • @1998Loz try posting. and sqeezing your knees. that helps a lot. also try sitting back in your saddle during the canter

  • very helpfull.!!thx :)))

  • Thx, rlly helpful

  • Nice seat! and hey what kind of horse is that, it kinda looks like a quarter horse, but i can't really tell :/

Awww i remembered when i first learned to canter. i was 4 and laughed and screamed like a banshee when he picked up the lead :D

  • @lucayy017, actually you use your reins and your seat. Applying pressure to the reins is the signal for a horse to slow down

  • What an absolutely beautiful horse!

  • I am going horse back riding and it is going to be my first time jumping and to start a canter this is really going to help me with everything! Thank you

  • i was told today in my lesson to look up how to canter a horse. this was because i could tell the intructor HOW you got a horse to canter, but not WHY. ive through some websights, and they all said the same thing i told the instructor. i'm so confused ...

  • Awsome seat there! Im sure your far better than all those stuck up people sayin you cant ride BLABLABLA ... Probably jelous cos you have a nice canter ;D :L

  • ok sorry to critisize but you were notg kicking in a rythm like you shlould and it didnt seem like you where making your horse very comfertable because you where banging in the saddle

  • blocking? and the most basic? THE ONLY!
