  • It sounds like heaven!!

Two wunderful performers, dedicated to perfection, supporting each other to heavenly beauty!!

  • this song strikes a nerve literally every time i hear it.

  • some of the pronunciation is wrong....beautiful though

  • @tashnny Seriously? It's Jessye Norman. She speaks German fluently and has for 40 years or so...lol She even goes so far as to speak German without realizing she is. Not only that, but in operatic styles, the pronunciation is often over exaggerated as to be understood.

  • @langleywil I understand that, as I have taken German diction, and lived in Germany, but the words ich, heimlich, and dich, are not supposed to have an "ish" sound....

  • @tashnny funny that, seeing as she's known worldwide for her impeccable diction. oh well, good for her i guess that she was good enough to be a regular at both the Vienna and the Berlin Philharmonic, not to mention good enough for every great director from Solti to Karajan, both of whom I'm sure would have had something to say about her German had it been wrong.

  • @legionx2012 would they?? lol

  • @tashnny Where do you think that the pronunciation is wrong?

  • @styrianinchina the words ich, heimlich, and dich. And a little wierd on the word "grabe"

  • Damn this is good.

  • Jessye... she's da Bomb... endless breath... endlessly intelligent singing.....

  • Es ist kaum zu glauben, wie Jessy Norman deutsche texte interpretiert. Ich habe ihre Interviews gesehen. Was für eine fantastische Frau.

  • Jessye ist einfach nur genial!

    Absolut richtiges Tempo.

  • she look like Diana Ross

  • Einfach nur KLASSE !!!

  • The Key I'm in is C. I can't find any in that key on here......

  • @babygirl20006 You singers with all your blasting keys. Just sing it as written, gad demit! Hate playing in C sharp because of some stuck-up singer. C is acceptable, though!

  • Truly awe inspiring singing.

  • One of my favorites. I sang this on my senior recital. Well done, Ms Norman.

  • perfect for autumn :)

  • She is stretching the notes way too long only to demonstrate to her audience that she can, if you get my drift. It is no longer authentic, but overly sentimental, also because she makes these smal portamento's on top-notes. I don't like it!

  • It's called passion if you get my drift!! It's within the style.

  • Perfection!!!!

  • Thank you both!!! I can't say nothing more...

  • this is the most beautiful rendition on youtube. thanks for posting! I get chills everytime I listen to this

  • I have listened to this on CD for many years and it's just by far the ultimate. .. Bravo

  • I still get chills from listening to this Goddess milk this tone poem!

  • Absolutamente fantástica e arrepiante esta interpretação.

    Viva a grande Diva

  • magnificent

  • Norman und Parsons haben Gilm zu Rosenegg begriffen und seinen Text kongenial umgesetzt. Die Transposition kommt Jessye Normans Tessitura voll entgegen. Feinsinniger, inniger kann man es nicht gestalten!

  • I'm so glad that Mrs. Norman chose to take this rendition so slow. It gives the piece a very deliberate, haunting, sorrowful tinge. Brava!

  • made me tear up... the climax is so powerful!

  • just stunning!!

  • she sings this divine... by the way, she sings it a terz lower than written....

  • Art Songs generally are transposed into different keys for different voice classifications. Most books of them come in High (Soprano/Tenor) and Low (Mezzo-Soprano/Alto/Baritone/Bass) editions, and sometimes even a Middle edition (Young Baritones, Lyric Baritones, etc).

  • thanks for the information... I did not knew that!!!! LOL

  • it is a major second lower, starts on Db rather than in Eb Major. However is prettynormal to change tonality of lieder

  • Thanks Ratoci! I was wondering what key Ms. Norman sang it in. I have it in Eb (the sheet music), but it didn't sound right to me.

  • Ms. Norman has transposed this down into the mezzo key of Db.

  • I love this key also. I am a mezzo but my key of this piece was in Eb.

  • This is in Db.

  • VIVAT JESSYE!

  • Bravo for the video! Just a perfection, as it should be for such singing!

  • Did anyone notice the capacity of her breath? She can sing the entire long phrase without disruptive inhalation. wow

  • This is a great rendition.

Oh Damn, i just ran up on this video.

I love to hear the female voice as it caresses this song.

You two responders are so right.

I got cold chills listening to Ms. Norman

I also liked Dorian Lefebre's version also.

She doesn't quite have the polish of the likes of Norman but i describe her as the way newhotmail puts it.

I am not an opera fan either!

My high school band did Allerseelen and i am a big Wagner fan....operas, it doesn't matter

  • i completely agree with you jaason53. if you listen to this song, you don't hear her singing, you see her soul....just stunning!!!

  • Just wonderful, as we have used know with the great Ms. Norman. But what a wonderful picture you have found of hers! I think she is one of the most beautiful women in the world. And absolutely, the greatest voice!
