I feel the same, in elementary people said I was good but I didn't think so and know I'm in middle school and people say I'm good , I wonder if in high school it'll be like yours... Ima draw 10 hours a day now
@gevoian when i drew in elementary school, ppl say "thats rlly good!" and stuff and now when i look back i wonder "why did they let me do that?!" lol its a funny thing, growing up and learning from mistakes and old crappy drawings :)
Oh my gosh! I am in 9th grade, and in elementary school everyone told me I was good and such, and when I got accepted into this fancy art school I also thought I was good. But I get there, and everyone but ten of the visual artists are Asian. All of these kids had been to art school there whole lives, and here I was just beginning. They, at the age of 15, all drew like it was a photograph. I felt so bad about it. Thank you so much for this video.
I'm about to apply to a Computer Arts course which includes a lot of animation and drawing. You are amazing and you inspire me. Keep up the good work!
DUDE! You totally sound like you grew up in the West Van district! Cause you said you go from elementary to high school and you live in Vancouver! Yay I feel so connected to you! And yes - I used to be the best artist in my elementary school, then came high school and so many Asians... But I still think I'm 1 of the best in my grade. Vain much? Anway, thank you for such good advice!
I'd LOVE for you to make videos about animation ^^
I actually thought about studying animation.. but it didn't pan out.
I'd also like to know which school you're going to, and how it is :D it would be wonderful to find out, because it might help me decide to go do animation later on too.
@TarenjaDA I don't think some people understand the vastness of the internet. lol It's easy to just download a PDF or DVD about 2d animation or 3d animation. I know I downloaded a bunch of animation books, but the best I found was The Animator's Survival Kit. It also has 16 dvds by the author. I downloaded these with torrent sites like Demonoid*com, Isohunt*com, and ThePirateBay*org.
You may've mentioned earlier....but, is this a Wacom Tablet with your program? I use a Wacom with "Canvas". But, as you know it works equally as well with PhotoShop or Corel...or.....??? At any rate, what settings do you use....as in "pressure, changeable opacity, pencil width, etc. "
Btw, I am with you, I grew up with many from "Asian ethnicity"....and I agree, you are not necessarily more gifted at Math or Art. However, I really think y'all are very talented at driving. ;P
Your voice was perfectly fine and you did very well.. Now if we could get rid of the buzzing/humming sound, it would all be perfect.. but please keep up the good work and the tips coming, I really enjoyed it!
Great Advices Sycra,, i got improved in drawing in your videos, plz check my work on Deviant Art
also..
i suggest that you download the Great Ideas in Psychology - Audio Podcast it's available free on iTunes. It explains how human learning things and stuff.
Thank you for adding the commentary. I have found your videos some of the most helpful on Youtube, but the voice explanation really makes it more clear. Good luck at school!
Haha, I totally relate to that thing about moving up to a new school and suddenly seeing everyone else draw amazingly :P I was the best drawer in my school until I moved up to secondary and was thrown into a few hundred kids ^^; Ironically I became best friends with the best ^_^ Not Asian, but ah well :P I still draw though. An AWFUL lot :D I doodle in my notebook at college and have improved loads in a year :)
is it VFS you're attending? anyway, animation school that sounds wall-to-wall interesting :)
i remember a video about character creation, and the artist was saying he was trying to imagine the life of the character and his qualities and defects, is it something you tend to do?
Once you start out animation school, you should post a video on the best way to draw a character from multiple angles (front view, side view, etc) and still maintain their likeness. I've heard of people using molding clay to sculpt a bust first, but I wanted to know what other techniques there are. I'm sure 3D programs can do this automatically, but I'm more interested for projects like illustrating a graphic novel where you draw the same person differently every slide.
please make videos about animation and the blog thing! i love drawing but i'm starting animation school aswell next week so im more than interested :)
This 25 minutes of advice will really help a lot of people stuck in their homes and trying to learn how to draw by themselves xD Thank you very much and a vlog would be awesome! Btw I'm shocked to hear pro's draw that much -.- makes me feel bad lol
.... your guest find it acceptable whatever you do today, because you are the important one. Often if they did mess up their speach, the guests found it even more endearing. Sycra, on this channel, you are the important one and you are helping others, so whatever you do and however you do it, is most acceptable because it will be just right. So please don't worry about not speaking ok, you're doing a great job!! ..... now all I need to do, is tell myself the same thing hahahaha .... best, joe
this is great you started talking, it takes that confidence I wouldn't have. I can organise a group of 300 people and photograph it yet I can't talk on a video lol. I think it's because I through a switch stepping into photographer mode and I then have the confidence to talk to them with authority. I photographed weddings for 30 years and here's another thing .... often the groom was really nervous about making his speach. But I told him, it's ok today because you are the groom ......
Congratulations on your Animation school!! I think that's fantatic and would love to see some videos on animation or vlog on how it's going!! Best of luck to you!
Would you say that having the knowledge of the bodies muscles and skeletal structure helped you drawings improve? And i don't think you should feel nervous anymore because i see a lot of positive feedback, so good job.
I'd really like to see some animation techniques. It sounds to hard for me to try, but maybe when you post some techniques I could see how hard it actually is. I still have to learn how to draw people first. :)
Your advice is so helpful! Im in a related position, my peers and art teacher tell me I'm good, but I know I'm not that good, It's so satisfying to know how to over come that and progress. I would love if you made some vlogs about animation school too, as that is what I'm ultimately aiming for, and I'd love to know what I need to learn in advance. Love the videos, thanks for all the help :)
I've been subbed to you for a long time, and I've always thought your video's could do with some voice over, I'm so glad your talking now, the man has skills!
thankyou for being such an honest artist. your advice is very helpful and I can relate to it. it is lovely that you are becoming more confident :) please keep talking in your videos!
I hear you... Talking in my videos also makes me nervous, so I know how you feel lol! That's why I don't talk in my videos, I just lip sync and dance, haha!
Animation videos would be amazing, as it is one of the fields I'm seriously considering for my career. I'm going to be a HS senior and am also really looking to crack down on my hours (aka stop being so lazy) and really improve this year, so your tips/vids will surely be very useful to me in the near future. (: It's really quite inspiring to have somebody who has been through what I'm going through now; thanks loads for the advice as well.
When I was younger I used to do about 5 hours a day. Now I'm varies to 18 hours to none at all. And I've found that the key to improving is often realisation. Thats way your videos are so useful, because they can help you realise what you maybe have been doing wrong.
I've always done comics- so I can draw the face, shoulders and chest really well. But legs and are are rubbish. How you draw your poses taught me a competely different techique of drawing legs that helped sooo much.
I appreciate the candid discussion, it makes a huge difference in watching you draw, I just wanted to say thanks and I look forward to every new video :)
Your advice was complete bullshit. I'm half Asian and everybody who's always known me have always said that I get my drawing "skills" from being Asian. People need to stop being so fucking insecure about themselves enough to stop with the racial crap going around. It's one thing to not be such a good artist. It's another thing to be easily influenced to find something retarded against a type of person to make yourself feel better. Christ. I thought you were actually smarter than that.
@FUSSYBABY No, what he's saying is he didn't want to be a person who excluded Asians when he was comparing his artwork to others peoples. And artists will always be insecure about their art- otherwise they wouldn't try to improve. Not trying to improve makes you a failaure as an artist. It doesn't matter if you do or not, its about trying. I think the whole "Asian's are better than everyone else" probably isnt to do with gentics but attitude. Manga has put artists higher up in people's mind sets
Not to be buzzkill, but I think people are pretty unfair when it comes to judging how impressive something is from race to race. Being Asian I play piano and draw a lot as well, and some of my friends think I'm pretty decent and they say things like "damn, asians can do anything!" which I don't mind since I have a sense of humour and they mean good, but it strikes me as a bit unfair that because I'm Asian, people think I have the innate ability as opposed to have practised hard for it like Syc.
I wish you made this 2 years ago. 2 years ago i was that type of guy you said. any way yea Make all those types of new videos you said at the end.any way thanks for the tip. I think i will be walking away just a tad bit batter of a artist then i was 25:26 min ago. Great in vise.
thanks so much for your vids, I always watch them, and then instantly become inspired to go do my own work. Some of my finest works were made right after I watched one of your videos. I even listen to the Juana Molina song you put on the drawing hands video. It helps me come up with something everytime.
I love it when you sound dumb sometimes and laugh at yourself =] it's comforting to know that you're human and it's funny =] you're amazing and keep up the amazing work!!
haha, i've been doing the "draw every day" thing consecutively for the past year. Even if I have to cheat myself and draw a stick figure, I make sure to do so. But for the past two months, I've actually been really dedicating myself, drawing portraitures and more technical and gestural stuff.
Good advice dude. I've gotta say, hearing you talk about how to improve teaches me more than just watching a drawing video of yours that has just music.
Keep talking, it's very cool you're talking now, before you looked like a machine xD Now people can get that feeling that you're really a person and connect with your artwork better.
@Sycra I am a good artist myself and I started drawing young too... I got really into drawing when I discovered girls liked drawings of winnie the poo and shit like that ^_^

I do that sometimes, but it really depends.
I thought Sycra was a girl because Sycra sounds more feminine as a name, in my opinion. Sycra's pretty far from a girl though.

haha, i've been doing the "draw every day" thing consecutively for the past year.
