there's something about this song and a lot of daniel johnston songs that confuses me. my ears hear sloppy guitar playing and a voice that is not much better than most regular people but his sincerity makes up for all of that. He doesn't even have to try to make you believe every single lyric he sings because he sounds so genuine, which is so hard to find in musicians these days.
I remember seeing this on MTV some 25 years ago. It was from "The Cutting Edge", a music show that did an episode in Texas, featuring Timbuk 3, Brave Combo, Joe King Carasco, True Believers and this guy. For some reason, Daniel Johnston struck me more than anyone else. Was it the quivering voice? Was it the simple lyrics? Or was it the fact that Daniel was just so unique and talented? Maybe it was all three.
This guy is unbelievable... It's like there's absolutely no buffer zone between the audience and his naked soul... There's something so ultimately genuine and honest about his song writing and performances it's hard to put into words. I can't even imagine what it would have been like to see this live.
Daniel is an amazing soul. Although he's been labeled as "mentally imbalanced" he has the unique ability to describe his journey in song. This to me makes Daniel more "balanced" than most people labeled "normal". If you want to experience what Daniel (and one of his greatest songs) can sound like with a full music arrangement check out the video - Daniel Johnston and The Swell Season - Life in Vain. A truly memorable Austin City Limits moment.
For those who would like to hear some excellent and colorful interpretations of Daniel Johnston's songs I heartily recommend Kathy McCarty's "Dead Dog's Eyeball." Her powerful, straight-arrow singing and imaginative band arrangements fully flesh-out Johnston's songs, not altering a note of the great melodies. For those haters, or those just "on the fence" about his shaky voice and extreme low-fi approach, trust me on this.
@surfbum5412 ha i love how people automatically associate this kind of music with hipsters... that's probably why you don't like him.. scared of being called a hipster?!! what the fuck is a hipster even?!?!? someone tell me!!! god damn I'm losin it
@gibbonsandtheslut Basically, a hipster is a term used by insecure dolts who view someone's like of something as inferior to their's because they themselves don't like it & because they don't like it, they think nobody else does either so therefor the person has to only be trying to look hip by showing interest in something that doesn't appeal to them. Yeah, I know its a pretty narrow minded & ignorant way of thinking but then again, those are the type of people that use the term "hipster" :)
Daniel Johnston, watching your story and hearing your music stopped me from killing myself last night. I'm 23 and just the summer before my father, my only guiding light in this life left this earth. I fell into a deep depression , distanced myself from my family to the point that they don't even acknowledge me anymore, and I've been abusing sleeping pills on a daily basis in which I sleep for 17 hours at a time. Until hearing your story last night I was convinced life couldn't hold any beauty.
@goodbye41 I'm so very sorry for your loss. If my father would have passed away I wouldn't know what to do. You're a strong person who has made it so far, and you can make it even more far. Life has it's downs, but eventually it'll have its ups.
Please don't end yourself or even think of it. One day you'll end up becoming something great, you'll have a family and friends who love you. Things will get better. They always do. Just wait and see..
@goodbye41 I would have thought listening to D Johnston would have made you kill yourself. Now go away hipster...go grab your shotgun and fixie bike and ride off into the night.
this dude is so raw and honest. i think his popularity stems from that being a rarity in most commercialized music these days and his newfound exposure to a younger generation. its not hipsters. its real shit from a real guy for real people.
@WhatILeaveBehind Hey me too bud :) glad it saved your ass you don't want to lose it. Manic depression is a blessing and a curse all at once but music is always good, peace
@TwoSkirts watch the movie 'The devil and daniel johnston'. If you have only watched this video and enjoyed it, you are in for quite a ride when you learn about the rest of his life. Tip of the iceberg.
Bipolar schizophrenia and he still writes better than most of the crap I've heard over the last thirty years. Someone said it best. God bless this man, c'mon, guy took the keys out of his parents airplane mid-flight and threw them out the window.
I didnt know nothing about him until i watched the documentary awhile back an now i find my self at work every now then singing or humming his music just to keep the time passing...Daniel thank you for your music
Man, just thinking about the documentary about him, and it's such a fuckin shame. His parents can't stand his musical aspirations, and nobody gives a fuck about him anymore.
Except for me, and others like me, who understand the musical genius that is Daniel Johnston. God bless him.
I love you Daniel Johnston and everything you've done - but this song is when I fell in love with you. The fact you went from this video to where you are today is triumphantly beautiful. Just know there are two kids in NJ who appreciate you deeply.
For those of you not from Texas - San Marcos is a small town outside Austin. When he wrote this in the early 80's it was a quiet, pretty and fun place to go to spend a long afternoon with friends. You could drive back to Austin before dinnertime so it was conveniently close but far enough away that you could do what you wanted and not get caught (pot, beer).
I don't know how anyone could watch this and not get choked up at least a little. Songwriting seemed to be Daniel Johnston's only effective medicine for the pain in his life.
Epic performance. If Daniel J was in his prime today, he'd be performing choreographed dance routines whilst miming his latest hit, " Baby i live my broken dreams, baby" probably featuring Kanye West or some other talentless fuck stain of an excuse for an artist.
If that was the case he would of been acting like The new kids on the block or Milli Vanilli or some crap back then...or glam rock...I don't think your comment is valid, good day Sir
It wasn't actually MTV who gave him the time; it was a local show in Texas, I believe, that Johnston just happened to be performing at, and MTV just happened to be covering.
@qinella it was almost certainly because Kurt Cobain championed him by wearing his 'hi how are you?' t shirt and saying how great he was. Nirvana also got the Melvins worldwide exposure, Krist wearing their t shirt on saturday night live.
I watched the documentary "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" and apart from it being frightening and heartbreaking, in it there's certain things he said that epitomise what this record means to me. "I'm ok coz I know where ever i go I have music in my heart." His childlike purity stills me. Such a stunning song. Andrea x
