I dont get stressed over modeling specific locations or keeping everything to one period. Keep up the amazing work!
I'm with you bro! I just want to run trains in big loops and enjoy the sights and sounds. Since I can't decide on 3 rail vs 2 rail, I may mix it up and include my old S gauge AF on my layout along with O scale.
hey, im building a layout on a tight budget, the table and track cost $750 all thats left is buildings and ground cover for teh 4x8 table, any advice on the subject?
This is great! Sure, i maybe more prototypical with my own layout, but alot of the time, im like you, if i like it, I run it! End of story. Far to many people get to hung up with the dam BS of era, road, etc etc.
Its all about having some fun and enjoying the layout. Its your layout after all, you do what the heck you like with it. Keep up the good work! That GS4 looks awesome.
@formidable38 "You made my day" ! You & I think alike and theirs room for all in this "hobby" ... I wish more people were like you and again, THANK-YOU .

Wow....I mean wow!!!! I am thinking everything you said. I like so many different carriations and I decided to get back into trains after30 some odd years. Now I want an O gauge setup. But, I am the kind of guy who is going to go nuts/overboard eventually. What you have is what I would love...lots of engines available to PLAY with. Yes they are toys...for FUN!!! I would love to pick somebodies brain about the whole process. I know what I want, i just have to work backwards. Good job!!!!!
Truly awesome and inspiring layout and I appreciate your sense of humor. I 'm sorry that MTH and their products do not live up to your vision and expectations. I have heard such problems too (early on) and that is why I stuck with Lionel. I'm not a purest either and don't have the space for a permanent layout. I hope to build an extra garage just for a layout. I can see and hear the "fun" everywhere in your layout and video. It certainly ranks with some of the best, but it is all relative right
Sorry to hear about your problem with MTH, I have never experienced that. It's probably due to the fact that I don't ship I go in person to the headquarters in Columbia MD. Maybe there is a difference when you stare them in the eye. Where do you live.
Excellent work on your layout and video. And for all of those train lovers, just have fun doing what you enjoy. Remember, it does not matter what scale you have, just have fun with it and possibly mix some train scales together and have more fun. Your video inspired me to make my youtube name. NSCALEFUN
man you are funny im a lionel guy mostly for postwar sets but i do have one mth set its a j class N&W #611 passenger set but you got skill and must have alot of money to get this stuff i know mth is alittle cheaper but thay ant that cheap to buy you ant finding all that is pepoles homes no plans and you got all this wow thats magic of the mind but i wish you and your friend the best of luck with your layout het maybe when you want to sell you can give me a killer deal on one of the sets you got?
Per the modeling comments in your video, it doesn't matter WHAT you "model" or what era. All that matters is that you have fun running the trains. Who cares if it's scale or real or not? I've got a Lionel (yes, I know you're an MTH guy, but I do what I can lol) Dash 9 DEMO locomotive that I run starter set cars with. Why? Because it works. GREAT layout, man. Love the K5LA horn on the AC6000 units. Not sure where Lionel records or creates their horns from...not half of them sound real...
you have to be Mike Wolf's best friend. that is too much for words. my layout is at Wayne's train world on youtube, but it's my first attempt. How did you keep all the mth cars from uncoupling? everything I ever got from MTH was a royal pain. this is amazing. real nice job.
How much oil do you go through to keep all of your equipment lubed. Also I haven't had the problems with MTH that most people get. I had a G Gauge Big Boy destroyed by UPS and they sent me a new one after I sent them some pictures of the destroyed engine. I have had to order parts before (via e-mail) and I haven't had any problems except when the product is not in stock. However I do know people who have had crappy service and can relate to you.
@IllinoisTrains1 (I sometimes answer under this account) *I'm sorry about your experience and please know YOU are among MANY whom are at the mercy of a Company whom takes little or NO care in helping it's customer base. "WHY" ??
I will never understand how / why this is ... MTH is: "everything & nothing".
I LOVE lubing wheels / engines and do so often, It's no big deal.
I have 2 New York central steamers, a Lionel 4-4-2, and an MTH 4-6-0, and I usually have them hauling lionel coaches from the rival of the New York Central, the Pennsylvainia Railroad, so it's like the PRR's rival the NYC is working for their rival the PRR, which is weird having a rival work for a rival. LOL
i only have one train and it was my granpas its a chesapeak & ohio engine with rocket car satilite launcher explosive box car and lionel lines caboose he had it in like 1950
@natezemanek Nate the only question that i can ask people like you, that have layouts this size,is where in the Hell do you find the SPACE,how much space are we talkin here???.
I cannot imagine how many rubber tires on the wheels you have to replace! It was a pain for me to replace tires from two SD70ACe's. But the layout is just, awesome! Great job!
@CookiesAndGuns95 Thanks so much ! :-) *when I get any engine, the first thing I do is too cement the traction tires in place ... replacement is almost never !
@natezemanek lol Yeah, that is a good idea. Before I had to take off the sides of the trucks, remove the old tires and then painstakingly put another whole pair on. The first time I did this, it took me a half hour to figure out, but I was 11.
Happy THANKSGIVING and a Very Merry Christmas! Hope my vids give u a laugh and a "shake of your head" as in (man rangeclerk has really lost it). Hey because of someone who was born on Christmas Day, Dec 25 locomotives and other cool stuff works! In the year Galileo died, Issac Newton was born in that year on Dec 25!
Wife and I were at COSTCO ~2wks ago and she saw the two sets and liked the locomotive one---so unknown to her she is getting that as one of her xmas presents!
You are takin' to the Choir my Friend, Love your layout! Question (may as well) what was your best deal you got in obtaining a train set or two? Do not know if u collect HO scale but COSTCO has two nice sets for sale for around 47 bucks at present---but suspect they are selling fast--winter 2010. My dad who passed away; I was 81/2 in 1960 had Lionel then went into building HO scale---other day opened a sealed box and found a "engine" he was building' hadn't been painted yet either---ck my vids
@rangeclerk I'm "O" Scale, your Pop was a great man yes? I see you "fixed the problem" (above) LOL ... Ho's BY FAR the better way to go space and everything wise. God prey for me ... "It's too late" :-) Merry Christmas and I'll see you video's ASAP.
@natezemanek Yes but all our "Dads" are "Great Men" 'caused they instilled in us the "Spark" to continue our love of trains---for some of us we took to it as a duck take to water and others, we thought and thought but realized we love the train and in all its forms and an infinite way to enjoy the hobby of Railroading----You are doing Excellent Work---true inspiritation!
Nice to see someone have fun operating their trains, without all that prototype mania and scale obsession that pretty much put me off the hobby... also the cubic dollars it seemed to take to make things like the magazines did it. I started with my brother's Lionel on an oval, and just liked to get on the floor with it, imagining it was the real deal. Keep the child-like imagination and you'll always have fun.
Super layout. I can't wait to get my old trains out of the crates again for the last time packed away. How do you make the mountains and cliffs? Once again I loved your video. Wgivney@aol.com
@rugmaker53 ThankYou ! *I used old suspended ceiling tile I found at the curb ... I made a "break", then sandwiched it layer by layer in plaster / Durabond 90.
After that, I painted it. SOUND HARD? It wasn't ! The opposite was the case.
I have the same attitude re: prototypical. My layout is 12.5x24.5, Lionel Legacy, fastrack, 30 switches controlled by Legacy, 10 accessories controlled by legacy, no scenery yet. I just love to run trains.
Umm thats to much train for me to handle where to began im building a 1/24 scale dragstrip street style like a road from an old town with a train crossing.
Great video. I am starting my own 8' X 18' layout now. Your advice is encouraging. I am also no rivet counter. Everyone is critical of my Lionel O Gauge tubular track. I love it, and maybe it isn't prototypical, but it is better. Wouldn't the world be better with shiney three rail railroads? Love your S1!!! I am a Pennsy fan. But why not have the best engine pulling the best passenger cars? Great Northern and UP had the best passenger consists. THANKS AGAIN!
I'm with you there! All they care about is if it's relating to a real era, or if it's a model of an area! Make whatever the $**# you want! It's a hobby, not a competition. I'll learn from the messages you put on the video, thanks!
jobslov2 here thank you for the nice comment you made about my layout. i am on youtube about 3 or 4 days. i am in the hobby train about 3 months. i am 44 years old but i'm a baby in the train business compere to you. so i will appreciate all the comments and any tips you can give.
p.s. oh, my train is at mth for repairs and its been 4 weeks, so i understand
@JOBSLOV2 "Well welcome Sir" ! I'm so sorry you have had some "back luck" with your Trains .... I hope you will get it back soon and have fun as you should!
Advice? hum ... "just go slow" ASK !! a good many people ALL AROUND YOU have Trains ... (or know someone that does) ... "ask" :-) that's my best advice. Don't think of size and "express yourself" as you have ... YOU DOING GREAT! :-) Tom
Hey, Nate. Think your layout and your philosophy are great. Not all train clubs are uptight about realism. The Canadian Division of TTOS includes just about every variation in train interests you can imagine, runs a mobile layout at train shows that mixes gauges, and generally has a lot of fun. Keep up the good work.
I have another question if you dont mind lol. Do you know any good train websites to buy from, all the hobby stores? Where im from have closed and I havent had any luck finding a good website.
I dont care what anyone says, you do what YOU want in trains! Thats the beauty of it! Your rules! Rock on! Your video is just great and the variety is amazing and looks like a blast to run! I have had issues with a new train but they were polite to me at MTH..had to send the train back twice--it wont communiacte with my DCS but all my other engines have no problems.. and still dont have it but they were not rude.....
WOW!!!!! I love it.....Just started a year ago and can't get enough of it. I love MTH and I can see myself doing this forever. Wish I started when I was younger.
Best O scale ive seen on utube! what do you think of Williams engines? ive heard only good things about Williams engines. Myself i never had one break down and i run the crap out of them! by the way the added texts do look a little tacky on this awesome video imo.
@JxT1957 Thank's ! (JUST SHUT TEXT OFF IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT !)
* * "the first thing it says is that* * ... (otherwise I answer questions all day long about the clip) ... hope you can understand? :-) HAPPY NEW YEAR ! thanks again OK?
I'm asking from the view of a train newbie who's planning to build his first layout, how did you decide to go with MTH only? Do you simply like their locomotives and rolling stock more than Lionel? Thanks!
@poopologist96 "easy" Lionel's "TMCC" is Radio based and will NOT work in an applic. / envir. such as the one here. MTH's system "talks" digitally and is totally reliable.
Opinions are many yes? .. Mine is you'll be sorry if you go with the Lionel system. (I did and gave up) TERRIBLE "NO WIN" Senegal. (MY Opinion) :-)
Yesterday my 27-month-old nephew was somewhat stir-crazy and I showed him this video. He's very active and doesn't remain inert for long and for much, but he watched the whole video enthralled by the kaleidoscope of trains on your layout and expressed excitement every time a new train emerged. Thanks again for posting, I look forward to any future postings of your trains. Poopy
What are most of the train's running in the video, MTH or Lionel? I like the detail of premier MTH, though I'd take your word on, staying clear from them. Does Lionel still have that same detail as the Premier MTH? I'm just starting to look at them again, since the 80's. I just noticed the premier's caught my eye, in detail and thats what im after the most
@050179mh MTH for the most part ..,. I LOVE their Trains ... I hate their Service / attitude. Guess it's that simple. "Everything and nothing" ... To be, THAT'S MTH Trains. All the joy their is in the hobby is soon ruined by their "screw you" attitude ... In my experience, It's been years. Hate to admit it, but 4 detail ... "MTH".
I'm somewhat crestfallen about your experience with MTH the company. I was glad that a company like MTH has emerged to be the upstart challenger to Lionel's near-monopoly on O-scale trains and impressed by the range and scope of their products. I feel MTH with their high quality and wide range of products have inspired Lionel to do the same and not proverbially rest on their laurels. It's too bad MTH apparently could not provide customer support that their products deserve.
I love your layout, it looks like the perfect layout to run and play with many trains on. I like your attitude that you don't fuss over the historical connotations of the scenery. My two philosophies are 1) that trains are the star on an O-scale layout and scenery is no more than supporting cast to make the trains look good; and 2) O-scale trains are to play with. One request--could you make and post a video of your longest train? Thanks for posting this fun and entertaining video. Poopy
great layout have had o scale trains my whole life, my brother and i just laid a two track main in my attic which is 30feet long by 12feet wide both running reading t-1's his is chessie mine is BM&R 2102, will have video of it up shortly.

@rugmaker53 ThankYou ! *I used old suspended ceiling tile I found at the curb ... I made a "break", then sandwiched it layer by layer in plaster / Durabond 90.

Hey, Nate. Think your layout and your philosophy are great. Not all train clubs are uptight about realism. The Canadian Division of TTOS includes just about every variation in train interests you can imagine, runs a mobile layout at train shows that mixes gauges, and generally has a lot of fun. Keep up the good work.

I'm asking from the view of a train newbie who's planning to build his first layout, how did you decide to go with MTH only? Do you simply like their locomotives and rolling stock more than Lionel? Thanks!
poopologist96 2 years ago

I just noticed the premier's caught my eye, in detail and thats what im after the most
050179mh 2 years ago 2
@050179mh MTH for the most part ..,. I LOVE their Trains ... I hate their Service / attitude. Guess it's that simple. "Everything and nothing" ... To be, THAT'S MTH Trains. All the joy their is in the hobby is soon ruined by their "screw you" attitude ... In my experience, It's been years. Hate to admit it, but 4 detail ... "MTH".
natezemanek 2 years ago
I'm somewhat crestfallen about your experience with MTH the company. I was glad that a company like MTH has emerged to be the upstart challenger to Lionel's near-monopoly on O-scale trains and impressed by the range and scope of their products. I feel MTH with their high quality and wide range of products have inspired Lionel to do the same and not proverbially rest on their laurels. It's too bad MTH apparently could not provide customer support that their products deserve.
poopologist96 2 years ago
@poopologist96 Yep... Their trains are great until you need Service! THEN your Doomed ! :-(
natezemanek 2 years ago
I love your layout, it looks like the perfect layout to run and play with many trains on. I like your attitude that you don't fuss over the historical connotations of the scenery. My two philosophies are 1) that trains are the star on an O-scale layout and scenery is no more than supporting cast to make the trains look good; and 2) O-scale trains are to play with. One request--could you make and post a video of your longest train? Thanks for posting this fun and entertaining video. Poopy
