As much as I love serious dramas it's nice to watch something that is a bit of fun every so often like this or Crazy Like A Fox if you remember that one.
Years ago these type of fun, not so serious dramas were quite common. Nowadays they're very rare and stick out like sore thumbs compared to things like Damages or The Sopranos. I think that if you grew up with them like I did that you don't find the style of them that annoying.
It was a big hit. Plus, it has some of the most well known and talented actors in the business - so I'm not sure what you are talking about. It's fine that you don't personally like it, but certainly not for the reason you stated.
You think Dick Van Dyke is a crappy actor? I used to love watching this show. This and the Dragnet movie. Ah, those were the good shows. I'm only three years older than you, but I love the 80's and early 90's shows.
Ah the gritty realism of Diagnosis Murder. An Octogenerian doctor who solves crimes for his cop son (who's made the rank of Lieutenant despite never solving a crime without his father's help)assisted by a junior doctor(who clearly has a very quiet A&E department) and a (token black)pathologist who always manages to stay bloodsplatter free during her autopsies. The cop and the junior doctor also have enough time to run a ribshack. No CCTV in a hospital with a high murder rate either. Priceless
AMIE MILLER is the BIGGEST "Diag Mur" fan on the planet!! SUPERFANZ UNITE!!!!

This is just one of those shows that fills a gap. It has crappy actors and it is horrible to watch.
