Audacity Tutorial for Podcasting

Hey, When I first downloaded my copy of Audacity, the click track played with the recorded track the hot track.. For some reason this function is not working.. Is this a common problem?? An easy fix?? Any feedback is appreciated..

@zongshu This would require that your PC have Stereo Mix installed. Not all PC's have this capability. You could also do the same thing with a USB mixer hooked to your PC.

@littlegoldhair You may need to go into Preferences and then Libraries and make sure that the Lame Encoder shows installed. If is not installed, there is a button there that will (or should) automatically install it for you.

@markmitchbitch In order for it to come through both speakers, you must be using a Stereo track or Mono track. Stereo will allow you to choose the left or right channel.

F.I.Y Everybody, the newest version of Audacity DOES NOT require the MP3 encoder because you can export it as a MP3. It's already built in!

Hi sir, I was trying to just get the basics down. I had recorded a few seconds of your video(audio anyway, about 10 second) I wanted to have the audio go before the music but the time shift tool won't allow me, is it something with the program or am I just missing something?

@erinshunny To use the timeshift tool, you will need to have an area either before or after the point you want to move to, otherwise, you can only move one way and not backwards. Especially if you are attempting to move to a point before the beginning of the track.

Audacity has a way to have multiple tracks for different instruments, vocals, etc. This is most likely what your teacher is using. I would ask them to explain how they are using Audacity to do this and I am sure they will be happy to show you.

I would suggest looking in your Sounds section of Control Panel and see if you can turn off the other mic there. If you have two mics connected, there should be a way to control these from the Control Panel.

Sorry it didn't help. I have never claimed to be an expert with Audacity, just trying to answer the questions as they come in. If you need more expert help, you should contact the Audacity people and ask the ones who wrote the program, not just someone who does a short tutorial on how to use a portion of the program.

You must install the LAME Encoder in order to be able to encode MP3 files. You can find this as a free download on the same site that you downloaded Audacity from.

In order to record from your PC sounds, you will need to activate the Stereo Mix option in your soundcard (if it has one). Not all computers have this option, otherwise you need to use something like Virtual Audio Cable to accomplish this.

Use the selection tool to select the area you want deleted and simply hit delete on your keyboard. You can also use "Generate silence" to create silence in the area without losing overall time length.

First, go to EDIT then PREFERENCES and make sure you have your mic input set to your PC soundcard (assuming you have your mic hooked to your PC) and then save your preferences. If this still doesn't work, make sure you have your mic plugged into the right port on your soundcard. his will make a big difference.

Audacity is a free download and you can take most any type of audio file (wav, mp3, etc.) or audio from a source such as your pc and then edit it down to any length of audio you want. You can use the LAME DLL Encoder (an additional free download) to create MP3 files from your edited audio.

You will need a video editing/creation program that will allow you to add your sound file to the video or slideshow. Audacity will allow you to create the audio, however, you will need other software to create the video and then add the audio. Look for SLIDESHOW CREATOR SOFTWARE in Google. This should allow you to do what you want.

Uploading MP3 files to a host will depend on that host and how they do it. For a good explaination on RSS Feeds, type HOW DO RSS FEEDS WORK into Google and you should be able to find the info you require.

If you have a mixer connected to your PC, this would give you the ability to use multiple mics. If you are wanting to record, say a duet, and get both people singing on the same soundtrack, you can easily use one mic and record the first person to one track and then record the second person separately onto a different track and then mix them together within Audacity to normalize the audio, etc.

In the latest beta version of Audacity, there is now a feature that allows you to remove the vocals from some songs. Keep in mind, this is not 100% and may not remove all of the vocals.

I recorded my podcast on Audacity. I pushed Stop - now I want to continue, but it takes me to a new track. Will I be able to link them together later or do I need to record everything on one track. If so, how?

Continue the recording onto another track. Complete your recording. Use the Time Shift Tool and drag the second track to the end of the first track. Line up the two tracks and export your recording OR drag the second track and add it onto the end of the first track, to have one track.

Recording the song or music is not where the quality really comes in, I mean you need a high quality recording to start with, but when exporting the file to MP3, make sure you set the preferences to 128k or CD Quality and you should have the sound you are looking for.

You save the song by using the Export As function found under File.  Save your song as a WAV or MP3 or which ever format you like. As for using it on YouTube, you will have to include the song track within your video as you use the video editing software to create the video. Making a CD is done through your burning software, such as Nero. Hope this helps.

That's a great question! Look under Effect and play with the Change Pitch or Compressor filter effects. There may be another effect that will allow you to get that "helmet" feel, so just play with the different effects to see which one makes the best sound for your needs. I haven't had to use an effect like that yet, so please let us know what you come up with!

Within Audacity are a number of filters and effects. I cannot think of exactly which effect or filter will give you this sound, however, playing around with some of the effects may produce the sounds you are looking for. Can't hurt to try a few!

The only way I know of to put audio from YouTube into Audacity is by running a patch cord from your speakers into your mic port on your sound card or by setting your sound card settings to Stereo Mix. Not all sound cards have the stereo mix option. The way I do it is by running all my audio through a USB mixer and then I can run any audio from any source, including YouTube into Audacity this way.

Yes there is. Go into Edit and Preferences and check mark the option under Audio I/O called Software Playthough (Play new track while recording it) and the option Play other tracks while recording new one.
