props to summers he was one of a few players who gave us problems playing for laney. he got about 140 and 2 tds on 40 carries. the other was edelman at csm i think he scored 4 rushing tds as a qb he was a baller now with new england ballin. but its city college all day u bzy
i would have to agree...i kind of like how redman looks on film..he's a bit taller, and really powers through plays that look like he's done..if he's anything like his collage playing days, i think he could stand a chance..and so far, he is fairing well in goal line stances for preseason..hoping they put him in a starting lineup position during preseason, to give him a better feel..i think he'll pan out
man steelers fans we got a big time steal this guy is going to be way better than that fag beanie wells. and all the other running backs that were picked before him
i don't understand why these bitch ass defensive players come at him all soft. They know who he is and what he does. IF you don't hit him, then he is going to hit you like a fucking brick wall
I feel like if the Steelers use him primarily as a fullbuck they are going to waste his talent. I think a guy this big needs some momentum before he hits the hole to be affective.
Remember this... Frank Summers wasn'tinvited to the combine but at his pro-day, he ran a faster 40 than Chris Wells and Knowshon Moreno, outweighs Moreno by 25 lbs, and lifted 30 reps of 225 on Bench,1st among RBs at the combine. Competition? When he did play a ranked BCS Eligible team, he rushed for over 100 yds
Big time steel. The fact that he Seeles picke dup two solid corners and a freturn guy in kennon Lewis and Joe Burnett along witha 5-9 241 who runs in the mid-4.5s is amazing. You got a bruiser to go along with your franchise tailback and if a healthy Rashard Mendenhall returns, their backfield will be stacked. Evander Hood will strengthen the interior, and Burnett and Lewis only solidify and give depth to a geta seconday whose only prob last year was covering Larry Fitzgerald
totaly agree how frank sliped that low i will never know, i bet he will make a bigger and quicker impact than any of the other 8 draft choices in my opinion
They have a similar look and size, but thats where the similarities end. Illaoa played on a team that never ran the ball. He was very big at 5'9 255, but he ran something like a 4.88 and 4.78 at his pro day. Summers ran a 4.55 at 240. Illoa had an 8'4 inch broad jump, Summers was at 9'5". Also had a 35 inch vert. Summers is just a much more explosive athlete than Illaoa.
I'm super glad that the Steelers picked this guy up, especially since they passed on a great power back in Lendale White a few years back. Will this guy be the answer to Jerome Bettis' absense? I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
Well there's 2 types of 3rd down backs. Third and long, and third and short. There should be room on the roster for him since we cut the Love Muscle Gary Russell.
You are showing your age and shorting a lot of really great runners. Riggins, Campbell come to mid right off the back. The bus was great, but look at what those guys did as well. I always hated watching them against the oilers because of Campbell.
well bettis came from a big name school and was well known. this guy came from UNLV and wasnt very well known. besides, people like tom brady werent drafted till the 7th round, and willie parker wasnt even drafted. so rounds dont mean a whole lot
The BUS had a better college highlight reel and was also faster. the TANK is so so but i guess he could do some good in 3rd down and short yardage situation like the BUS
UNLV is not USC or Florida. Can he run that way in the pros. I am hoping "The Tank" can make a successful transition to the NFL, but I didn't see Ray Lewis in the highlights.
they are going to use him just like they did with davis and russell. steelers are hurtin for a hard runner and a good blocking full back. he seems like a good pick. drafting him and aq shipley were both smart moves
You're right. We shouldn't expect him to be a hall of famer, but we don't need to be. I think we're all sick of seeing Parker/Moore stuffed 3 straight times on the goal line. Gary Russel showed promise and Mendenhall could have helped, but neither of them are the answer this guy is. Watching this video, he actually reminds me of Chris Fu more than Bettis.
The Bus Jr, the Short Bus, whatever the hell you wanna call him, just get the damn 1st down/TD!
Pete Carroll went after him hard, even after Frank verballed to UNLV. USC wanted him as a FB, but UNLV gave him a shot at RB for 2 years.
If the guy was coming out of USC, nobody would say he was going to be a bust....whatever though. Biggest thing about Frank is he's a team player and works hard. I'd make a nice wager he'll make the team.
Now, saying Bus Jr. is puting lofty expectations on his shoulders...he may never be that, but he'll be good in short yardage.
How about you settle your uppity ass down and leave the "Yinzer" slur to those who actually know what it means?
As for Frank Summers, if USC coveted him, then he's probably better than you think. Looks like the defending Super Bowl champions have just the goal-line and short-yardage back that they've been looking for.
now the steelers have them samoan toughness in the defensive backfield AND offensive backfield....Frank's 1/2 samoan....so maybe he's not just Bus Jr. but also a bit Polamalu Jr. in him too.

dont forget the speed. he moves for a big guy. kinda like a shorter brandon jacobs or a more powerful leron mcclain
bbizzy89 2 years ago
he will be used on third and short and in goal line situations, look at the way he just lowers his head and moves the pile!!
they'll prolly use him in 4 wide sets to pick up the blitz as well.
he also has great hands out of the backfield, better hands than any of the running backs we have now..so next season will be quite interesting.
JR66108 2 years ago
....
Don't get me wrong he's a solid receiver but there is absolutely no way he has better hands than Mewelde Moore or Rashard Mendenhall.
He'll likely be the short down back only. Mendenhall or MeMo will be the blocking backs.
DeeJayKrens 2 years ago
the draft analysts were praising his hands greatly on draft day.. so we'll see how that works out.
Summers is a lot bigger than Moore.. i'd be more comfortable with summers blocking over moore any day.
JR66108 2 years ago
Nah I'm aware he's a solid receiver, but just because he's not a better receiver than Memo/Mendy doesn't make him a bad one.
Summer is bigger than Moore, Moore also has 4+ years experience blocking in the pros and being a 3rd down back than Summers has.

What about Mewelde Moore? I agree, Frank The Tank will get goal line carries, but no way he can jump over Mewelde to play on third downs.
But, like most people, I can't wait to see him in black and gold.

i'm sure ben won't mind that he can block and catch either.

On a related note, is there any team in the league more stacked at RB than the Steelers?
Parker, Mendenhall, Moore, McHugh, and now this guy.
They have a runner for every situation that could present itself. (Outside, Inside, Speed, Moves, Power, Catching)
Personally I hope he's willing to play FB. If so, Carey Davis better get is resume ready...
