U should of killed that! they were brought in by a different country and now there eating all the other animals food so they have nothing to eat and they die. People are trying to wipe out that species!
Does she ever bite? What kind of interaction did she have with you (playful, uninterested, chews/bites everything/everyone, enjoy petting, ect.)? Also, was she litter box trained or kept in a designated room? We adopted 2 ferrets for a year, then re-homed them as it was too difficult/time consuming to keep their 'bedroom' (our spare room w/ their cage) up to health standards, but we didn't want them caged all day. I'm curious about nutria - they remind me of capybara!
@Aquaticopia Yes, she did bite. Actually more of a pinch but very painful and it left a bruise. She loved playing but only with our immediate family. She attacked anyone else. She had a 10' x 20' compound with a swimming pool. There is no way a nutria could be kept in the home. They need to swim and love eatting the vegetation. (which is why they hunt them in Louisiana. They eat the roots of the grass that holds the levees together.) They are very destructive in that sense. (continued)
How cute !!!!!!!!!!, we have one just like her (but is a him). He does just the same when is some food he likes. Mine ( Norby) is 1 year old, how old is Molly?
@oliviakinz9 - To be honest I don't remember. I do know that we purchased a feeding bottle from the pet store to give her milk in the beginning. That was about 7 or 8 years ago when she was a baby.
That´s just great - so fantastic..great animal..such a pitty you lost her.. :( Can´t understand people here talking so bad about it! Cant understand why people watch videos like that when they think Nutria rats are natsy..so stupid! Actually these people doesnt know that a nutria rat is NOT a rat ! They are related to the Guinea Pig ! Most people muddle them up with an beaver rat - they destroy everything not so the Nutria.. Greetings from Germany..sorry for my bad english :)
@serge421UA Can you explain how she is killing off the marshland if she is in my backyard? I agree they are destructive in general. But not this one in particular. She was obtained as a baby.
@MrSouthphillyitalian, first of all, we haven't had a baby in the house for over 20 years. The "baby" you hear is Molly's voice. Molly showed no aggression towards her keepers at all. To strangers she was dangerous I must admit. We had to make sure she was in her compound when company was over. Her compound was 10' x 20' with a swimming pool which she used year round no matter how cold it was.
@ScribblesOfOwls na lol its because in the last 3 weeks i had a gas heater put in my basement and now i got mice i think their breeding behind my stove i had to catch a couple to get rid of so far
okay. I was just walking by the lake and came across a baby. we thought it was a dead rat at first but after about five mins i discovered it was a nutria. i took my shirt off and scooped him up. he seemed very comfortable the whole walk home. i guess the warth of my hands were comforting. well am now on a hunt to find out what they eat, need, like, ect. please help me out. he is asleep now in a kennel.
@brittanyransome They love carrots and most vegetables. I do not recommend that you keep it as a pet. They can become very aggressive, especially to strangers. They have a mean bite (really is a pince but hurts like hell). If you do keep it, you may want to build a compound (a large dog kennel will work) and put page fencing under the mud so it cannot dig it's way out. swimming pool is a must, but not bottom drains because it will chew the drain plug out as mine did.
I'm so sorry you lost her in Katrina. It's another sad story of a family being separated :-( She was absolutely adorable though. What a sweet creature!
in Italy people hate them. Yeah people have some good motivations but I think that after all this are lovely animals. When I was a kid I used to feed some wild baby nutrias with carrots.. they were so cute and they moned like the one of this video!
I love it, I want one! So funny, I thought there was a whiny child in the background at first, but now I see... there is only its the furry child in the video. My cat makes similar noises when annoyed LOL
Only b/c coastal Louisiana and river areas are infested with them and they can be serious pests when it comes to consuming crops. Controlled hunts were actually allowed here a few years ago to thin out their numbers.
@rebelwithoutastraw My parents lost 2 of their cats after Katrina, they were home and the cats were micro-chipped. Rather than take the time to scan them properly they (HS) adopted one out some where else in the country and put the other one to sleep.
No they are not legal in Louisiana. It is considered a wild animal and therfore illegal. The only legal way to keep them is to be a licensed trapper. My wife is now an official LA licensed trapper.
i live in alabama near a sewer plant and in the back of the plant is a sewage pond and there are hundreds of nutria rats in there so i didnt know that you could have a pet nutria rat has it ever bit you?
She had not bitten the family per se. She had nipped us when we came up behind her, she then realized who it was and basically apoligized with her expressions. SHE HAS TRIED TO BITE NEIGHBORS AND STRANGERS. I do not recommend keeping one as a pet!
Wow thats a big rat, I didnt know there were any that came that big. Sorry you lost her, but dont feel too bad. Its highly possible she and all the other Rats who have been lost went to their secret underground lair, sharpening their swords and waiting for the day when they can rise from the ground and overthrow the Human hold on the planet.
and are vegetarians. They were brought to louisiana as a fur bearing animal in the 50's from south america.Hurricane hit they got loose and destroying wetlands today. They have a $5 bounty on their head.
Molly is the cutest thing ever!! I'm very sorry for your loss :( I had a pet rat named Bud that I lost a few years ago that was very dear to me, so I know how you feel. He died of old age. I'm sure she's alive and well though, like hulkmeister23 said, they're good swimmers!
I wouldn't worry, nutrias are great swimmers and she's probly alive somewhere in the swamps.
I hope, however, that you weren't the types that elected to leave behind their pets, assuming you evacuated before the hurricane. Tell me you were seperated by force, because if not then I have no sympathy.
