We wouldn't have to "relic" guitars if they would just paint and finish them like they used to. They used minimal amounts of paint and finish so it would wear through fairly easily with some playing and sweat. Now there is 120 coats of plastic put over 92 coats of paint. That won't age any time soon. Maybe trying to hide the crappy woods they are using?
i agree with others here i never saw the fad in the distressed look or vintage look??its a piece of wood with simple electronics on it too play music with...thats all...Gibson and fender and others i guessed have lost touch with all of that and there drive is money pure and simple....this romance that people get with these things i could never understand ..and i have been playing since i was 6...and i know and have heard all the arguments but i cant justify spending 3K or more for a guitar
@TheXXXDB thats very true, Gibson and Fender for the longest time have been coming up with reissue guitars of years gone by, the sad fact of the matter is they can go ahead and put an outrageous price on these guitars and someone is crazy enough to buy it. Gibson did finally come up with somethiing new but it looks like it was designed by the same guy who used to work for Pontiac and designed the Pontiac Aztek
The concept of building distressed guitars, replicas or otherwise, was a great marketing idea by Fender to sell people with too much money an overpriced plank of wood with 6 strings on it. Give me my 1991 Fender '52 Telecaster RI that has my own battle scars on it anyday.
Jeff Beck sounds incredible on the Telecaster and should use it much more than he does.
The finish wear is because these early Fenders were coated with nitro-cellulose, not the thicker, more durable finishes of today. One could (and likely will) argue that the nitro finishes (thin) were one of the reasons early Fender were able to sound (and later look) so cool. I have a '68 Tele with a ton of play on it... but the neck and the body show minimal signs of friction wear... because by that time nitro was not used.
There's no way I can justify paying that kind of money for any of those Custom Shop guitars...just not worth it. They're not the real deal and I prefer to add my own dings.
I made the mistake of buying a guitar I'm afraid to scratch, because it totally affects the approach to playing it, my next guitar will be a fender strat with a whammy, and I'm gonna beat the hell out of it!
jwandhistools - you probably play about as much in a year as Beck and co do in a month, which is why your guitars dont wind up like this.
My 1980 Tokai strat is already well on the way and not because I havent looked after it - the frets are worn down to nothing from 8 hours a day, five and six days a week playing.
Isn't hilarious he puts the parts on a blanket so they won't get... damaged...? I would have to agree with most people here. I totally understand the collector's value of the original that has been played by Jeff himself for many years, but to replicate the damage, I don't know man, what are you trying to prove when you buy that? It's only marketing! Put in the endless hours and wreck one yourself if that's what you want. I'll take care of mine so I'll hopefully play them for many more years.

@OsvaldoPaese You just don't understand man. As a guitarist some guitars just have that feeling to them. It's because of that guitar that he wanted to practice his fingers on, and create things.
@OsvaldoPaese fuck off. a certain guitar can make you play better because it just fits you. it's just that perfect fit, and its the same with amps and tone a certain tone can make you play better because you're inspired by it. just because he can make it sound good doesnt mean he'll want to or if he'll feel inspired by a piece of shit guitar.
@stbreal I don't mean the worn down side..There are two versions of a telecaster(esquire) and the earlier one is thick as an SG ( 1.5" ).. This guitar has also a contoured side like a strat but that's an other question...
@jwandhistools In all fairness, Jeff's original probably looks like that because he was constantly touring with it, using it on stage almost every night, etc. I'm not sure if you are a touring musican or not, but the road is probably different.
Buying instruments that look like this is pretty stupid though. I don't understand why you would buy something like that on purpose.
@jwandhistools but these have that pawn shop antiquity to them. you obviously didn't love your instruments so they aren't worn in and accustomed to your hands so you don't deserve that experience. go buy a stiff piece of wood and staple strings to it, paint it in gobs of red paint, you'll be much happier
@jwandhistools it's a repro of Jeff Beck's early 50s Esquire he bought used in the 1960s. If you were a professional musician who bought a 15 year old Esquire in the 60s and played it for several years every day, it would look like that. Sorry.
@pat976 I know exactly what it is. It's a fake. Simple as that. If that's what works for you, then go buy one. hey, if you have an extra 30 grand you can get the Eric Clapton Les Paul signature model. Wow. What a deal!(;-(
@jwandhistools I couldn't agree more. Buy a new telecaster and play it until it looks like this. not only will it be more genuine, but you will become a better player.
@Everywhere404 What's really funny is the Guitar Center near me has a couple of road worn/relic/whatever things, and they hang them way up on the wall out of reach unless you have assistance. I guess they don't want them getting "damaged".
@jwandhistools I have to agree with on that note. But actually people like buying these sort of guitars because of its "relic" look. The "relic" look is sort of famous among the greats like Rory Gallagher, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and many others. Lets take your car analogy, lets say you just found one of your most favorite old car in the world, and at the same time it has some minor dings and stuff on it but you by it any ways because its your favorite car in world so i wouldnt really matter.
These guitars from gibson and fender that are "pre-aged" really grind my gears. Seriously who the f buys these fake, make believe vintage instruments? Shame on the makers and the buyers of these axes. Pure disgrace!!!
@jasco242 I recently bought an "aged" tele. It was the best playing and sounding tele I came across on my search. The looks didn't bother me. I hardly think I deserve to be shamed for it. Mellow out mate.
these guitars are for the rich collector who for the most part, can't really play that well. Most real players wouldn't bother trying to get a phony aged over priced guitar. I would bet if Jeff Beck wasn't rich and famous, he wouldn't want to play a relic'd guitar. He is too much his own man. I love Jeff Beck's playing but selling over priced beat up telecaster/esquire, whatever is for rich dudes. Discrimination? You bet! Fender execs know there's big money in this relic game. It's crap!!!!!!
@duppykitoon Neither does any other guitar player. That's why those stupid "road-worn" guitars didn't go over so well. (At least I don't think they did, I never even played one.)
@sks29 well its a good thing that you can get a fender esquire for wayyyy cheaper, but i mean if you want to buy the one meant for collecting and not playing then fucking go for it.
@JoyDivison92 i was lucky enough to play one of those guitars (Jeff beck tribute esquire, a collector friend of mine got it and called me up) i gotta say that this thing just reminded me about how much better, in my opinion anyway, the esquire is. this guitar, despite all the dings and wear marks, plays phenomenally. but the price tag is outrageous. cant argue with anyone on that.
I swear, Seymour Duncan is like a wizard. He's basically the Merlin of the guitar world; dilly dallying in this and that / making things sound awesome. His pickups are exquisite too.
Fender must be laughing their bollocks off at the suckers who buy these 'relicked' guitars. Sooner buy a clean guitar and spend that money on mods that make a difference, not faux cosmetics.
Guitars for posers and people with more sense than money, methinks!
i seen this guitar in my local guitar store and it cost summit silly like £7999.
i personally have never seen the point of buying a vintage guitar the best way is to do it yourself as putzmitt31 said 'play the hell out of it' classic :P
I think a lot of people only disagree on these machines by the reason of the price. Fair enough, they are shitty expensive. But I think you pay for the nostalgia and the handcraft put into the guitar to copy the precise specs
Here we see very clearly that the original has a butterscotch finish where the copies/reissue/replicas clearly have a blonde finish, so what the #$%^ is Fender trying to do? Really, are the guys at the Fender Custom shop colour blind? Obviously they are.
Hey Look, it's Seymour Duncan fiddling with the camera... He actually owns this guitar. It's what his Vintage Telecaster bridge pickups are baded on... I'm kinda confused as to why an Esquire has a control plate with a switch unless it's a phase switch or something... Any gearheads have any insight? I'll do some research to see what's up...
they change the tone of that pickup...i read somewhere that with it in what would normally be the bridge position, it is with the tone circuit bypassed, and its at its brightest. the middle is with control of the tone via the knob, and the "neck" position is with the tone bypassed but running through a tone cap...and its in its darkest setting.
i understand the reason to get a road worn fender or heavy relic or what ever they are. but i can't see why ANYONE would want this guitar other than investment value.
Someguitarplayer1 - In the film 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels' Michael Caine's character says "In my youth I studied the arts but in the end I gave up. It was then I realised I had taste but not talent." For most buyers, owning one of these is as close as they will get to the legend.
That said, I did meet a twat once who had an Yngwie strat and once a month he would open the case and look at it. He couldn't play. I had just finished a diploma in music and had luck holding the guitar together!
Well, i agree with you if your willing to spend outragous amounts of money to get one just like becks, but honestly i rather buy my own telecaster (or any guitar for that matter) and 'bond" with it and let the wear on the guitar come naturally. That or build your own.
Jeff--the greatest living blues rock guitarist--offers what I think is a backhanded compliment to Jimi Hendrix, implying his act was just a showier version of all the stuff Jeff was already doing, yet I don't find enough musical evidence to really support this--and I've been buying Yardbirds releases both studio and live, official and bootleg for close to 40 years so I'm not new to Jeff's playing. I think he never got over Jimi's devastating effect on the music scene & status as guitar God #1.
Jimi changed electric guitar forever in his 27 years on the planet, but Beck who is 64 now I believe, has gone WAY past Hendrix. Beck was already better than Hendrix when he was doing Wired and Blow By Blow in the 1970's. If Jimi could here Beck's latest release "This Week Live At Ronnie Scott's" I believe he would have handed Beck his Guitar King Crown. Who knows what Jimi would be doing nowdays if he had not wrecked his life and music with drugs. I know that Beck really misses him.
Jimi wrecked his life using especially strong sleeping pills after a night of wine, women and song followed by nocturnal vomiting while lying next to a dumb groupie too dumb either to turn him over to clear his windpipe or call paramedics IMMEDIATELY. Moreover, you appear to miss the point of music entirely. Jeff's jealousy would be in Jeff's mind and his problem alone b/c there is no "best guitarist," "best drummer," etc. This aint the Olympics, chief--it's personal expression. Class dismissed.
Jimi was using German sleeping pills which were supposed to be broken into quarters. He was unfamilar with them and took too much. He had not slept in days because he was on speed. He had a real bad speed habit from most accounts. While I agree with you that comparing musicians is like comparing apples to oranges; I have been playing guitar for 30 years, and I along with many other players would have to put Beck at the top of the heap if we were forced to pick a "Best" ever player.
Well, their doesn't seem to be any artist here, shame. If you have ever played guitar, and felt the weight around your neck after awhile, it's uncomfortable. strats are a very light guitar, this beauty is hollow, and weightlessm and is a remarkable work of art and a wonderful tribute to the genius Jeff Beck, who has helped Fender sell a multitude of merchendise. Not to mention are completely blown away by his talent,! Those cars, and guitars are hand made.
its hilarious to think that ppl refinish and restore old cars but there are folks who revel in having beat up guitars, that are just as ridiculously priced as those cars are. but the difference is that car cost that much cuz its in pristine condition and doesnt look like its been sitting on a beach for near a decade
how is an esquire so different from a telecaster? It looks like they just cut away a little bit of the body and took out a pickup. and anyway, people only buy beat up guitars so it looks like they know something about playing. I'd rather wear out a guitar myself and actually know how to play it.
thank you kind sir, finally a man without his head up his ass. the guy you just described, im sick of that guy...... and their bloody millions of them walkin about. cheers
@Abelle92 Jeff Beck did those contours on the guitar himself. The Esquire has one pickup, but also a 3 way selector switch for different "tones" for that pickup. I definitely agree with you in that I'd rather wear out a guitar myself
@Abelle92 The Esquire dates back to when Fender was Fender, not FMIShit. After Gretsch went after him for the Broadcaster it was renamed the Esquire, and the two pickup Telecaster was also made available.
You've got your story as backwards as it can go. They didn't remove any of the body, and they didn't remove a pickup. They added a second pickup to the Telecaster. The "Relic" deal is a new thing for idiots. It has nothing to do with the Esquire.
@Abelle92 An Esquire IS a Telecaster with only one pickup and slightly different wiring, bypassing the tone control in the back position. As far as relic'ing, some people like it some people don't... that's a can of worms in itself.
@Abelle92 this particular model is a recreation of Jeff Beck's famous Esquire, someone had sanded the body down to mimic a Strat's contour before Jeff Back acquired it. Now you know the whole story... and don't worry, you're not one of those who look like they know something about playin... ;-)
@Abelle92 an esquire has different wiring for tone controls, the first position turns the tone control off so you get the true sound of just the pickup, the next turns the tone on so it works like a standard tele, and the third cuts the tone back all the way
This Fender Custom Shop guitar is for sale in a London shop for £7,000 ($11, 500)...why would you pay this for a smashed a piece of junk? They must sell these to Bankers/Traders suffering a mid-life crisis!! Is Jeff being interviewed in the Fuck Dungeon?
@dustin11 The story is not all presented well here. Jeff bought the 50's Esquire in '65 from Scott Walker for £75. 10 years later, Seymour Duncan wanted it so he built a custom Tele w humbuckers, brought that to Jeff as a gift (used on Cause We've Ended As Lovers) & essentially swapped it for the Esquire. (Jeff's too generous!) That's the original at beginning w Seymour taking measurements. (apparently now in R&R HOF) Looks like a replica next to Jeff for interview, probably one Fender gave him
there's no doubt that Jeff's a legend....I had one of his signature strats in Olympic White (awesome guitar, wish I still had it), but I firmly believe he is waaaay overrated. the music of his that I've heard is just....bleh. :(
We wouldn't have to "relic" guitars if they would just paint and finish them like they used to. They used minimal amounts of paint and finish so it would wear through fairly easily with some playing and sweat. Now there is 120 coats of plastic put over 92 coats of paint. Fender must be laughing their bollocks off at the suckers who buy these 'relicked' guitars. Sooner buy a clean guitar and spend that money on mods that make a difference, not faux cosmetics.

i seen this guitar in my local guitar store and it cost summit silly like £7999.
i personally have never seen the point of buying a vintage guitar the best way is to do it yourself as putzmitt31 said 'play the hell out of it' classic :P

Obviously they are.
oolongman 2 years ago
Finishes can change with age.

they were blonde the paint doesn't age well

At 2:05 you can see - with the pickguard removed - the difference in color. It's fairly blonde being protected underneath the 'guard.

This is how the 3 way switch works on Esquire-
Bridge: bypasses the tone-i.e. the tone knob doesn't work.
Middle: connects to the capacitor and the variable resistance-i.e. the tone knob works
Neck: connects to the capacitor but bypasses the variable resistance-i.e. the treble is fully cut, tone knob doesn't work.
MickCorgi 2 years ago
that was actually funny.

youtoobaccount11 2 years ago 2
Hey Look, it's Seymour Duncan fiddling with the camera... He actually owns this guitar. It's what his Vintage Telecaster bridge pickups are baded on... I'm kinda confused as to why an Esquire has a control plate with a switch unless it's a phase switch or something... Any gearheads have any insight? I'll do some research to see what's up...
ChrsGuit 2 years ago 2
they change the tone of that pickup...i read somewhere that with it in what would normally be the bridge position, it is with the tone circuit bypassed, and its at its brightest. the middle is with control of the tone via the knob, and the "neck" position is with the tone bypassed but running through a tone cap...and its in its darkest setting.
rockingroove112 2 years ago
i understand the reason to get a road worn fender or heavy relic or what ever they are. but i can't see why ANYONE would want this guitar other than investment value.
Someguitarplayer1 2 years ago 2
Someguitarplayer1 - In the film 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels' Michael Caine's character says "In my youth I studied the arts but in the end I gave up. It was then I realised I had taste but not talent." For most buyers, owning one of these is as close as they will get to the legend.
That said, I did meet a twat once who had an Yngwie strat and once a month he would open the case and look at it. He couldn't play. I had just finished a diploma in music and had luck holding the guitar together!
3Deity 2 years ago
Well, i agree with you if your willing to spend outragous amounts of money to get one just like becks, but honestly i rather buy my own telecaster (or any guitar for that matter) and 'bond" with it and let the wear on the guitar come naturally. That or build your own.
But i do see were your coming from.

I think he never got over Jimi's devastating effect on the music scene & status as guitar God #1.
dantean 2 years ago 2
I think he never got over Jimi's devastating effect
on the music scene & status as guitar God #1.
This is true, however unlike Clapton, who abandoned
the quest of 'Guitar Hero', he pressed on ... and on and on
and now, he is #1. Jimi would love what he's doing now.
Rosburg52 2 years ago
Absolutely, completely, 1000% true, imo.
dantean 2 years ago
Jimi changed electric guitar forever in his 27 years on the planet, but Beck who is 64 now I believe, has gone WAY past Hendrix. Beck was already better than Hendrix when he was doing Wired and Blow By Blow in the 1970's. If Jimi could here Beck's latest release "This Week Live At Ronnie Scott's" I believe he would have handed Beck his Guitar King Crown. Who knows what Jimi would be doing nowdays if he had not wrecked his life and music with drugs. I know that Beck really misses him.
thebibleisalltrue 2 years ago 3
Jimi wrecked his life using especially strong sleeping pills after a night of wine, women and song followed by nocturnal vomiting while lying next to a dumb groupie too dumb either to turn him over to clear his windpipe or call paramedics IMMEDIATELY. Moreover, you appear to miss the point of music entirely. Jeff's jealousy would be in Jeff's mind and his problem alone b/c there is no "best guitarist," "best drummer," etc. This aint the Olympics, chief--it's personal expression. Class dismissed.
dantean 2 years ago
Jimi was using German sleeping pills which were supposed to be broken into quarters. He was unfamilar with them and took too much. He had not slept in days because he was on speed. He had a real bad speed habit from most accounts. While I agree with you that comparing musicians is like comparing apples to oranges; I have been playing guitar for 30 years, and I along with many other players would have to put Beck at the top of the heap if we were forced to pick a "Best" ever player.
thebibleisalltrue 2 years ago

Abelle92 2 years ago 37
thank you kind sir, finally a man without his head up his ass. the guy you just described, im sick of that guy...... and their bloody millions of them walkin about. cheers
fallenmonkeytieryu 2 years ago
@Abelle92 yup, same goes with the Road-Worn Strats, id rather not spend an extra 400 for a beat up strat that wasn't done in by myself.
randommoosebrains 1 year ago
@Abelle92 Jeff Beck did those contours on the guitar himself. The Esquire has one pickup, but also a 3 way selector switch for different "tones" for that pickup. I definitely agree with you in that I'd rather wear out a guitar myself
intercourse5 1 year ago
@Abelle92 they also look cool as.
devilskin345 1 year ago
@Abelle92 an esquire came before the tele learn your history
lespaulrock1998 1 year ago
@Abelle92 The Esquire dates back to when Fender was Fender, not FMIShit. After Gretsch went after him for the Broadcaster it was renamed the Esquire, and the two pickup Telecaster was also made available.
You've got your story as backwards as it can go. They didn't remove any of the body, and they didn't remove a pickup. They added a second pickup to the Telecaster. The "Relic" deal is a new thing for idiots. It has nothing to do with the Esquire.
anon540 1 year ago
@Abelle92 the wiring is completely different a VICIOUS rock guitar..not a twangy tele
STORYTASTIC 1 year ago
@Abelle92 An Esquire IS a Telecaster with only one pickup and slightly different wiring, bypassing the tone control in the back position. As far as relic'ing, some people like it some people don't... that's a can of worms in itself.
pat976 1 year ago
@Abelle92 this particular model is a recreation of Jeff Beck's famous Esquire, someone had sanded the body down to mimic a Strat's contour before Jeff Back acquired it. Now you know the whole story... and don't worry, you're not one of those who look like they know something about playin... ;-)
pat976 1 year ago
@pat976 Jeff BEck, not BAck... LOL !
pat976 1 year ago
@Abelle92 The Esquire only had one pick up at the bridge whist the Telecaster had 2 stes of pickups.
kathmandoo 1 year ago
@Abelle92 an esquire has different wiring for tone controls, the first position turns the tone control off so you get the true sound of just the pickup, the next turns the tone on so it works like a standard tele, and the third cuts the tone back all the way
SiKxBlAzEr 1 year ago
@Abelle92 Yeah, good point. The road-worn series is rather dumb if you ask me.

dustin11 2 years ago
He starts talking about buying the guitar at the time he was in the Yardbirds. Obviously, it's not one of the new custom shop models.
Plus, I imagine a custom shop guitar wouldn't come new with the amount of wear-and-tear that one has.
slycordinator 2 years ago
