I, Robot is a book written by Asimov in 1950. I'm pretty sure the cybermen aren't that old, and I'm also pretty sure the idea for the cybermen was at least partly influenced by I, Robot, because that book influenced just about everyone who wrote about robots after 1950.

Well, according to a report from a crew member, the main villains of this episode are human-style. They're called Tritovore and are half human half fly. You can see one at 0:31 . But the swarm of aliens is a nice change from the humanoid aliens.

That's interesting. A report from a crew member said Russel T. Davies' goal with the Tritovore was to get them to be as iconic as the Daleks and Cybermen and plans to set them up to return in future episodes like the Daleks and Cybermen do. I assumed that meant they are bad, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

It really is. Doctor Who is known for taking the fears and fads of society and making them scary. The Daleks were created after the hate and genocide of WWII. The Cybermen were made when people felt uneasy about medical advances involving artificial parts. Episodes also use fads like plastic surgery, weight loss products, and 'going green' to try to spook us. The Tritovore don't really connect with the real life events the way the Daleks and Cybermen do, so I don't think RTD's hopes will be met.
