  • I once asked these guys what had been done to counter trans-sonic ground effect and was pointed to a couple of crude drawings of a fin under the nose...

    The stress points in the airframe are correctly placed for flight and NOT running on hard ground... The steering system is vague and the vehicle is directionally unstable... Ed is simply too old to have the reaction time to pilot it as serious speed...

    Sorry guys, but the only thing this would do through the measured mile is lay FOD.

  • um if i go down 4 houses from mine to girl tana's house the hanger for this car is right behind her house i figured this out like 2 weeks ago because i ride bmx with 2 kids and they always say were working on the eagle on saturday i asked them 2 weeks ago what the eagle was they said the rocket car i looked into it and was like holy shit i'v lived here for 8 years and never knew that this was being built right behind my house

  • I like how every British person who comments is some kind of rocket scientist. They seem to know everything there is to know about rockets, and how this will fair compared to theres.

    Every British person on here is just a armchair enthusiast, they watched one youtube video did a quick wikipedia search and suddenly are qualified to determine the outcome before anything has happened. That will just make them all the more idiotic when the N. American eagle kicks there ass.

    Has it not occured to you that the NA Eagle is a plane on wheels and bloodhound ssc is custom designed, as was thrust, a plane is desgined to create lift, a custom desgined land speed car is desgined from the top down to remain stable at those speeds.

  • I doubt they have enough power to go supersonic. Thrust 2 had 34k hp and was on the limit at 633mph. Put that in contrast with Thrust SSC's 110k hp, Bloodhounds 135k hp, or Aussie Invaders 160k hp. 43k hp is probably on good for 650mph assuming it stays on the ground....

  • I hope they make it, even being a european. The record has stood still for too long. But then again these guys have been idling for too long now. They need to get going and go for it, before the bigass money teams come sailing in. There are 2+ of those multi mil teams aiming for 2011 so I recon these guys need to make 800 this year or early 2011, since theyll almost certainly be clipped by the others when they are ready.

  • I hate to say it guys but the only thing this machine is gonna break is the poor sucker inside..Going supersonic is not like building a soapbox racer which this car is like compared to Thrust and Bloodhound.

  • Saw a thing on tv just the other night on this. I'm sure these guys are great guys and all, but with the stupid oversights they had in ruining their first engine, and looking at the construction of this thing... I'd say somebody's gonna get hurt. I don't think they're approaching the problem with enough expertise and science, just guts and glory. Best of luck to 'em but, I wouldn't put my money on them.

  • Although the tone in this video is arguably typically American, you guys could learn something from Craig Breedlove. Watch the SSC documentaries and you'll see a mutual respect between competing teams who have both held the record, something lacking here.

  • Just had a look on their website. They tested, again, in early July 2009 but only at speeds "in the region of 350mph". They're clearly short of money and serious sponsors. The project has become nothing more than an expensive hobby. I wish them good luck but the LSR is way beyond their reach and I can see the project simply fading away.

  • This car is designed to go 808mph, so even if they do get the record it will be smashed by the Bloodhound SSC which is designed to go 1000mph!

  • Good luck to them, but this operation does look painfully underfunded. They need a big corporate sponsor.

    Compare the official websites of the NAE car and the Bloodhound SSC......The latter looks highly polished and professional, like a team on a mission. The former looks like an amateur site made from clip-art by a High school kid on a Sunday afternoon.

    Bloodhound is an original car built from scratch. These guys are just screwing wheels onto an obsolete jet fighter with the wings cut off.

    This video sucks on many levels, firstly putting Noble down for his efforts - bad sportsmanship, he broke the record twice - period!

    Also who cares if the plane is no 763, starfighters are all the same, will it make any difference - no!

    Lastly i hate the way these american videos always try and big everything up and make it look like USA are doing everything bigger and better!

    The bloodhound will destroy this......

  • Personally i think these guys have had their day. Yes they have achieved a fair amount and they haven't broken the record but it's too old a project. I admire them for trying but their time is up. And what are they saying about Richard Noble having millions to spend???? Where on earth did this figure come from. They would not believe how difficult it was to raise that money and it wasn't even millions?! I mean at least get their facts right.

  • Love the way they make Richard Noble out to be some rich corporate bad guy. How come they didn't mention that he broke the record in 1983 with Thrust 2 when he had barely any money? He was a wall-paper salesman before that..

    Sure Thrust SSC had funding from Richard Noble, but the vast majority had to be found elsewhere, while the small team worked away at it in a college.. the guy isn't made of money. This NA Eagle Project is a failure.

  • I would also like to say that the next time any of these "cars" approach the 763+ m.p.h I feel it will be with fatal results. Sorry to say, but I don't think any of them are ready to approach 800+, and I can't see them being stable and staying on the ground at that speed. Look at how some cars are unstable and lift at 200 m.p.h. were now talking 800, come on!!!!

  • Amateurs! This looks more like Scrapheap Challenge/Junkyard Wars than a serious attempt. As for 'annhilating' the current record, this team are only aiming for 808mph - only 45 mph more than Thrust SSC. Bloodhound is aiming for 1000mph. That's annhilation!!!

  • Im sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the same team of Englishmen that set the current world record have now decided to destroy the 1000mph barrier. The project is due to complete in 2011. They got tired of waiting for foreigners to try and challenge them.

F-1 cars are designed from the ground up using near unlimited budgets and the highest technology and these guys think they can hit 800 mph? Better to try and fail unless someone dies trying!

Technologically advances makes me think Ferrari F-1 team, not a bunch of volunteers using scrap to make a supersonic car. Again I wish them luck and it would be cool to see, but I don't think this one will do it.

  • Hello Waldo. Sorry, can't agree with you. This thing will never break the LSR. But it might break the record for the longest time in development :) Look at Trust SSC and then look at the NAE. SSC is one-off engineering at its best. NAE is a mish-mash of bin parts. C'mon guys, time to give it up, before someone gets killed.

  • My name is Waldo Stakes. I have been working on LSR vehicles for 35 years. This car has a very good chance of breaking the LSR. The team uses the F104 Starfighter body because it is the cleanest aircraft design ever built and no aircraft built to this very day is faster at low altitude. The fact that they have been working on the car for ten years shows the dedication and unity of focus the team has. Reading these comments affirms to me why I don't do press as SOME human stupidity is amazing.

    All LSR projects that hung around too long and died. Much as I wish Mr Shadle and his crew the best of luck, I can't see them ever doing this.

    I hope they do get the record, to give Bloodhound something to shoot at, but I suspect the project will just fizzle out.

  • I agree. I've been following this project for about 5-7 years. They better go for the record within a year or two or they are finished. Richard Noble walks the walk and he'll have that Bloodhound up over 850 at the very least.

  • Gorgeous. Much respect to ya'll. I only worry the vehicle will not be stable. By which I mean.. Stay on the ground. My fear is; without more downforce it'll be light on the wheels, which will be light on steering. Will the original vert be enough? Maybe one small (2 square feet, 3 degree) canards up front on the nose cone and a 4 ft long, 16 inch set out back (teardrop shaped)to deal with the pressure that'll be created by the pressure wave from the nose. Good Luck and I'll be watching.

  • I use my engineering degree to design systems for saving lives, not entertaining myself. If you're ever in Nova Scotia, say hello to Fleetway Engineering, and make an equipment donation to the IWK Children's Hospital while you're at it.

  • I've been watching this project for a while now, and I admire the team's efforts. But Thrust SSC was a truly fantastic machine. An amazing amount of thinking and testing went into its design. The chassis was built from the ground up. The end result was something that looked like it could do the job. And it did, brilliantly. Sadly, the NAE is what it is - an old jet minus wings perched high up on outriggers. It won't get anywhere near Thrust's LSR and I fear for the the driver's life.

  • I know...I LOVE the underdog element of these guys, but if you wanna go 800 mph on the ground...you gotta build something from the ground up, that is SPECIFICALLY designed for the job at hand. The Eagle is neat "Novelty", and 25 years from now will be a unique collectors item & museum piece, but I'm worried somebody's going to get killed if they take this thing 500 mph.

  • If these guys think they are going to break the LSR with that they are either brave or crazy. Thrust SSC team had access to a Cray supercomputer in the design phase. These guys are backyard boffins at best. This car won't come close.

  • The F-104 holds the low-altitude speed record ironically for aircraft. It was set in 1977, over five runs, at an altitude of less than 100 feet on each run and an average speed of 988.26 mph, so 800mph is definitely doable. Its just a question of whether there's more drag from the wheels on the ground than the wings had produced while in flight.

  • The most advanced racing car on the planet, what a joke. Take a jet which had its first flight more than 50 years ago, remove the wings and horizontal stab and add wheels. As shown in the footage, they even had trouble going down the centerline of the runway at very low speeds compared with what they're trying to reach.

  • i am building a similar project, ive got my little brother's gogo push car and replaced the wheels with solid metal ones and bolted on a small but powerful pulse detonation engine, i think my LSR car has more hope than this waste of a F-104

  • As an american who was witness to history when the thrust ssc shattered the sound barrier I personal hate this stupid car/plane thing. Many american speed freak fans that day(15 oct o7) really enjoyed the british effort and the humility the showed towards breaking such a record. I think the spirit of america owned by steve fossetts family and mccglashens (sorry for the spelling) rocket car have a real chance to break andy greens record not this waste of a F-104.

    Add to this Richard Noble didn't even drive the thing. He realised that it was probably beyond his capabilities and so employed Andy Green, an RAF Tornado pilot, to drive it for him.

    For high-speed runs (up to 800 mph), the standard aircraft wheels are removed and replaced with solid billet aluminum wheels with a titanium band on the outside running surface of the wheel for greater strength and stress retention, machined specifically for use on the Eagle. No tires are used in the high-speed configuration.
