I don't care for the period instrument renditions. The composers in Bach's day, before and after, were always complaining about the instruments. If he had access to modern instruments, Bach would have opted for them in a heartbeat. Listen to the wonderful recording of Marriner. Absolutely soaring in majesty.
The only concern for period instruments were that they were quiet and often difficult to tune. That doesn't mean they didn't like the sound of period instruments, nor does it mean that the tone they produced was unsatisfactory. Do you seriously think we prefer this rendition because we want what Bach would have heard in his day? Maybe some do, however I like this rendition because of the warm characteristic that period instruments have. It's almost an entirely different piece.
@Samoriah No, while I enjoy all renditions of Bach, I most emphatically prefer modern instruments. If you want to hear history, fine, but Bach himself would have preferred todays music. He would have been amazed.
The Orchestral Suites are majestic. If Bach is not in heaven enjoying all that he wrought then the Universe is one big piece of shit. The greatness he created on Earth is difficult to grasp.
lovely, generally with most recordings of this they make the orchestra too big, this one is right size. works like these are best scaled down because the intricacies of bachs music become even more apparent.
Absolutely wonderful!!, I must say, the way that Bach keeps the piece flowing is absolutely amazing. I love 3:54 to 4:13 (the basoon goes brilliantly with the oboes and then the strings). Also the wonderful harpsichord/cello bursts at 4:04 and at 4:08 are characterised beatifully! Well done Bach! Bravo Ton Koopman!! Great!!

Ton Koopman is the man. He's one of the greatest organists alive--his rendition of the Bach Trio Sonatas absolutely the best I've ever heard.
