I went to Hokkaido in June and the fox village was one of the things I wanted to see cos of this video. When I reached there, it was raining. the place looked closed, there was no one but boy, there was a stench. So I peeped into the metal gates and I saw foxes like those in the video in wired cages stacked above each other IN THE RAIN! they were drenched. I thought that it looks more like fur farming! I drove further and saw another extension of this 'fox village' that opens to visitors.

the foxes there were the red coloured kinds, different from those in the video. I guess what I'm trying to say is be wary of such places. As what I saw turned out differently from what I had expected.

They are foxes that are their as a result of the fur trade. The white and gray strains are as a result of selective breeding under human care. This may now be a tourist attraction but it is a result of the fur trade

I actually met the breeder of these foxes and they are bred exclusively for pets.

I purchased two of them from different litters. The family that raises them is very loving and protective of these wonderful animals. He was contacted by the park a few years ago and sold them almost 40 foxes.

These are a result of over 30 years of breeding and care. and were never intended for the fur trade.

The variety of colors that arise from selective breeding makes these foxes useless as fur.

Notice that everyone is wearing big jackets,

it is obviously cold. In the winter, foxes develop

a thicker coat of fur and in the Summer, they shed

and look skinnier.

@DragonGyrl96 there are different variations on foxes, there's the standard red fox, and there are also arctic foxes which have silver and white variations like you see here

I think tanuki are a little different, usually they're brown/dark brown and lower to the ground (shorter legs) and their ears aren't that pointy. They have the mask like raccoons too (Tanuki=raccoon dog). I'm pretty sure these are foxes--arctic foxes, red foxes, gray foxes. But I guess it doesn't matter and I'm just being a know it all; either way they're really cute :)

If you watch from 0:12 to 0:17, you can see that there's actually two red foxes with that gray & white pattern. Very similar to some of the foxes in the Belyaev experiment in Russia (search for Tame Silver Fox on YouTube)... I'm wondering if those ones came from there?

I noticed that too, there's at least one gray fox that has those distinct white splotches on its face, and I think I saw one with the downturned ears. I don't think it's such a mystery though, a place like that would obviously benefit from extra-friendly foxes, and the fox experiment had to sell off a lot of its foxes since it had massive budget cuts.
