Americans DO want congress running monetary policy. Allowing the govt to control moetary policy would eliminate interest on money printed and eliminate wage taxes (seeing as wage taxes pay back the interest on money from the Fed).

The CONSTITUTION expressly gives congress the power over currency and by extension monetary policy. The FED was created by a bill rushed through congress while most senators/reps were away on Christmas break! Now Bernanke is trying to hold it as a given that the FED should have sole power over monetary policy and that congress having it is so very bad.
