In the beginning of the movie they're looking for a lost machine that was hidden in a jungle. A boy and man find it and use it to fight off alien invaders. Later there's a battle in the desert between the humans and invaders and someone's son dies trying to cheat.

@stopthesoftkill Dave Allen and Jim Danforth did the stop-motion effects and were great at their craft. I would say the stop-motion was as good as Phil Tippett's work in the Robocop movies from the same era. And no, this kind of sophisticated work with complex robots wouldn't have been made in 1973. The 70s was Harryhausen stuff.

With special effects, i think CGI has the advantage of a bigger range of movements, while stop motion looks more realistic in how they look, as stop motion models are real solid things :P

Gundam came out before Macross (in 79) BattleTech came out 2 years after Macross yes, but Anime hadnt had any dent in the US market (save for children shows) until the late to early 90s.

If you want to be technical... Gundam = Sentai = Prince of Space which was made by copying US Superheroes AND Sci-Fi movies of the 30's and 40's.

Robot Wars (1993) is Very Good movie. One of the most best films about robots (where enter: Robocop, Terminator, Mekagojira (from movie Godzilla), Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, VR Troopers, Short Circuit).
