  • he talked about oh comely for a grand total of 5 seconds? maybe less? only reason i don't like this video...otherwise it's great! but oh comely is my favorite song in the world...c'mon anthony!

  • @Eddiohead Oh come on....

  • Dude, you spoke about every single track (some songs you mentioned twice), except the track "The Penny Arcade in California". You forgot about it man! :/

  • @Guerrillablackdog I don't recall that being on the album.

  • @BlackStarKeepShining I'm sorry, the "Untitled" track after "Ghost" and before "Two Headed Boy Pt. Two". For some reason, when I put this album in my laptop, the track name appears like that. I don't know why.

  • @Guerrillablackdog lol.... pretty weird. But he did talk about it.

  • @Guerrillablackdog -hipster glasses donned- Jeff has referred to [untitled] as The Penny Arcade In California during live performances. It also appears as the name to the track in the poster that comes with the Holland, 1945 single.

  • I can't hang with someone who doesn't like this album. We would have nothing to talk about.

  • @johnnysim1985 That makes you a faggot and not even worth hanging out with.

  • @johnnysim1985 This.

  • So what is the actual song at the end of every TND episode?

  • Some of my favourite nmh songs are on "on avery island" but I agree dat ITAOTS works better as an album.

  • Neutral Milk Hotel = Hipster Music

  • NO.

  • NO.

  • @CanadianChronic2121 so? your point is? or do you have one, beyond just needing to label everything to thus distance yourself from letting it affect you?

  • @newzerokarolina

    Why would I have a point ?

I'm just saying it's hipster music . But if you want me to label it , I would call it Indie Rock

  • @CanadianChronic2121 OMG!!!! THANKS!!!!!!!

  • u have 666 videos.

  • Who are these people mocking ITAOTS?

  • he didn't mention the titular track.

  • My first time listening to this album, I thought to myself "There's nothing special about this album, at all. It's not horrible, but it's not great either". The weird thing is, even while thinking that, a few of the songs were in my head, and kept making me think I should go back and listen to the album. So, I did, and it's now one of my favorites. While it's very much possible to love it on first listen, I think for most, this album is a grower that needs multiple listens.

  • Is that some Sunn O))) in the background? Awh yeah!

  • all this time. all the times I've SEEN his name... I thought it was Jeff MAGnum. all this time...

  • @trefrog SAME! :/

  • Now whenever I hear your outro music, I start to sing In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.

  • I absolutely love this album!

  • i have never really gave itaots a listen. but i freaking love the cult status represetned by the album cover

  • This album got me through high school. i think i listened to it at least once a day...I got album art tattooed on my forearm the day after i graduated.

  • this album is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good

  • Thumbs up if you started to sing "What a Beautiful Face..." at 12:07

  • First of all Jeff's voice is one of the best voices I've heard in my life. Anybody who doesn't like it has something seriously wrong with them. Also, you touch on the melodies not being complex, but I must respectfully prove you wrong. "Two-Headed Boy" for instance. Using just 4 chords, he lays out a melody that stands on it's own. He sings most of notes in each chord, milking them all. It's clear Jeff often writes the melodies first, and that's what really makes many of these songs great.

  • @TurkeyJones91 Hahahaha

  • @nuncaexisto

I always imagined it as a coconut :/

  • I just saw Jeff Mangum. Shit was glorious.

  • @RdSoxFan618 Legit...? Why the hell didn't you ask him if he's gonna make more music? lol

  • @BlackStarKeepShining Somebody did about 4 songs in. They shouted out "Tell us about the new album!" and Jeff simply replied "About the new album."

  • @RdSoxFan618 Oh, so you saw him in concert?

  • @BlackStarKeepShining Yeah at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, GA.

  • @RdSoxFan618 Wow... "About the new album" ... lol.

  • It's a potato.

  • The Fool reminds me of pirates

  • I listened to this album for the first time a few weeks ago. And I HATED it. So I listened to it again, and I hated it again. a few days later something was nagging me to listen to it again, and again, and I have been slowly liking it more and more. It's crazy what music does to someone

  • I'm only 16 and the fact that Jeff can still convey such emotion in his music to someone that was as new to his work as I was a year ago is amazing. Timeless and magnificent. Will always be one of my favorites.

  • IMHO, give up the video effects...you don't need them. I respect your opinion so much, they're not needed.

  • i'll be honest, i think this shit is an 11/10, even though i'm lukewarm about ghost.

    p.s.: it's not a bagpipe, i think it's a zanzithophone

  • @cxnxi lolwut. GHOST is amazing. but yeah. I agree with you.

  • What I like about it is how it seems to come from a bittersweet place of lonliness and compassion.

  • Oh Comely is my favourite track.

  • He didn't give it a rating cuz he's a rebel. Everyone's giving ratings xD

  • Maybe I missed the point but all I remember about this album is shit irritating lyrics. I just thought he was trying to do a kind of 90s Beck thing with the lyrics but failing miserably.

  • I've only ever listened to this album once. And I liked it. I think. I can't remember. All I remember is the jokes etc about it lol

  • 10/10 review, exactly what i was thinking.

  • love this CD. I play it everyday in the car. Your review is spot on. It gives me such a great feeling despite the saddening lyrics. He masks how sad the lyrics are with the uplifting music. Note to all you. This CD is a great running song. Put this on and go for a run. Its amazing!

  • OAI > ITAOTS

Also, first interview of this guy's I've ever seen. I love him.

  • -_-....now do Avery.

  • review it again!

  • Even hearing this review gets me somewhat emotional, you're not alone.

  • What the fuck is MU/ and why do you keep mentioning it?

  • @StupidVideosDotComCo its a forum full of hipster morons, save your self a headache and dont visit.

  • @bennybear13 Go to bed Joel.

  • @bennybear13

Do you know antoni fantanso visits it right? SO you are saying he shoulndt visit a place fantano think its ok to visit but at the same time dont say fantano to not visit it?

  • i was 2 when this album was released

  • From a technical stanpoint, this album sucks, but it touches me emotionally in a way that no other album ever has. It took me about 3 listens to "get it". I usually listen to prog, jazz fusion, and electronic, but this...I don't see any folk album ever topping it.

  • two-headed boy was a good song but the rest seemed kind of redundant in comparison

  • @TheStationable You know what, you're right. Good thing that's not what i said.....

  • Love the review, hate the album. Still an annoying album for me.

  • When he said 'radio wires' in the middle of the video, I got chills. . .

I'm gonna go listen to ITAOTS again

  • I'm pretty sure the "piano filled with flames" is to do with bombs that were placed in pianos, which was common practice at the time.

  • one of my favourite albums ever - gives me goosebumps... great review!

  • I honestly thought this was a made up band for Parks and Rec

  • @RiptideDesign Not going to lie, that was hilarious.

  • Wow. never thought I'd see the day.

  • THIS IS AMAZING! IT'S LIKE THE CLIMATIC BATTLE END BETWEEN /MU/ AND THE NEEDLE DROP

  • Review ITAOTS.

Or kill yourself, pretentious annoying hipster faggot. And easy on those vowels, "aaaantone faaantaaaanoooo". Cunt.

  • Don't review ITAOTS

  • Review ITAOTS

  • I'm calling bull shit ant fant. Although the chords are simple, the guitar is not easy. It's very straining on the left and right hand. A flawed review for a flawless album. Fuck off my steez bruh

  • Damn good review. I hated this album but couldn't stop listening to it until I loved it.

  • I don't always review Neutral Milk Hotel.

But when I do, its a fucking awesome review.

  • please review the new dye album or at least give it a listen bayby

  • just review what you want bro

  • OK COMPUTER - PLEASE REVIEW IT

  • @flame0154 I KNOW YOU'RE DONE REVIEWING CLASSICS BUT PLEEASE

  • Ege Bamyasi - Can

    :)

  • I listened to this album a couple times and it didn't do anything for me. I found it annoying both musically and vocally. However I may give it another spin based on this review.

  • I think Neutral Milk Hotel is a pretty cool guy. Eh leads cults and doesn't afraid of anything.

  • Tracks 1 + 2 on this album are great and beyond that I've never been so bored in my life with an album that seems universally loved. If you say I prefer my music more "complicated" I guess I'll take that as a compliment but I don't think that really applies to me as I love simple pop music and stripped down raw performances. His voice doesn't annoy me at all, I listen to far more controversial voices than his. It's just dull. p.s. lyricfapping and saying epic/inspiring doesn't help your case.

  • Anyone else take Soft Bulletin over ITAOTS for the some of the same reasons Anthony said? Soft Bulletin makes me extremely emotional, in a good way. This thing makes me want to cringe and listen to Soft Bulletin instead.

  • The singer's voice was always too grating for me to listen to much of the album. It's like the Decemberists' vocalist but worse.

  • dude! you're growing a mustache!

    cal will lose his swag!

  • Fucking love that album.

  • 10:58

  • I was born late in 87 so I was 10 going on 11 when this album came out. I say that because I'm going through my first listen of this album. And I don't get it... Mangum can't sing... Maybe I should give it more listens but this feels like I have someone who can't sing screaming in my ear. Maybe if I was born in 77 and heard this in the context it was released I'd get it. I'm getting a headache.

  • Your ability to conjure up such abstract adjectives and continuous use of low-frequency lexis frequently interests me more than your actual topic, except this time. A sound review of one of my favourite albums.

  • HE DIDN'T GIVE IT A RATING!

    LET'S MAKE HIM DO ANOTHER!!!

  • @GeorgeTengTV The rating is obvious though.

  • If I could take one material thing with me when I die, it would be In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. (too bad I'd have nothing to play it on. Haha) It's my favorite album ever. I hope this review helps other people discover its true beauty.

  • HIPSTER VICTORY

  • I guess I'm too much of a musician to get this album. What speaks to me in music is the music itself and I feel like most of the songs musically are devoid of the feelings that lyrics so heavily paint. I get the idea and it has charm but it feels very overrated to me personally. It just really doesn't resonate with me but I understand why it does with other people.

  • @MightyMasturbator

"too much of a musician"? that's crap. musicians can appreciate anything the same as others, you don't have to dissect everything to its technical ability and the fact that you'd say something like this is insulting as a musician. As if musicians can't appreciate anything else.

  • @phili666 I think you are misinterpreting what I mean. I mean that lyrics are what grab me emotionally in a song it's the music and the musical aspect of that album just doesn't strike me that way at all. I appreciate simplicity and subtlety much more than technical ability in music. This album just never has really spoken to me in that area.

  • @MightyMasturbator the lyrics aren't*

  • @MightyMasturbator

oh ok that makes more sense. For what its worth i agree with that, but the phrasing of your first post made it seem the other way.

also, is your name a devin townsend reference?

  • LOL at the end of this video I started singing "What a beautiful face I've found in this place... ♫"

  • "It's layered.." THE LAYERS MAN, THE LAYERS! (Sorry Anthony, couldn't resist...)

  • this album consistently makes me want to cry

  • YES. FINALLY.

  • Shouldn't have reviwed it, now what will people complain about? Love this album anyway.

  • Dance Gavin dance is my fave psychadellic rock

  • @lemonlimelukey They're more psych-post-hardcore

  • @Dustinizawolf I would say I agree but no post hardcore band sounds like them, and the screaming/ singing compliments each other sooo well and melodical I just consider it psychadellic, the songs are extremely deep, most of that scream ostuff in other bands isn't my taste, besides maybe chiodos

  • @lemonlimelukey ..wat.

  • @lemonlimelukey ...wat.

  • Why is iCarly under related videos?

  • the build-up you said from king of carrot flowers pt.2 to pt.3 is actually my favorite part of the album, i always saw this album as mangum potraying a dirty homeless man just shouting out a story out loud to everyone and you happen to stop and listen and he's talking of a surreal story about love, hate, nostalgia, the future, peace, war, sex, and loneliness, while adding in memories of his own into it, i get this mainly because of the vocals, like they're nasally and wild, like a wild hobo.

  • you nailed this one. thanks anthony. love the classic reviews

  • This is my favorite album of all time, but I can totally understand why people may not get into it. I agree with you about the lyrics; I feel that they work best in their most abstract as a means to achieve a certain emotion that can't be expressed in words. All the music and lyrics are meant to compliment one another and create the feelings of loss, love, bittersweet happiness, and divine euphoria that they express.

  • Anthony, you obviously listen to a variety of music and take away positive experiences from all kinds, but is it difficult to share music with friends who have particular tastes? Have you actively built up a network of friends who are open to a wide range of music? Thanks!

  • Nighthawks at the Diner - Tom Waits

I need some backup that it's one of the best albums ever.

  • I love singing along with this album even though I'm out of breath by the end of it :)

  • Lyrics up there with the best Beefheart

  • im sure you heard the OF and Neutral Milk Hotel mashups. gotta love em!

  • The way you put your reviews together reminds me so much of Bill Nye. Especially the repetition of consonants. You are definitely the Bill Nye of music reviews.

  • I'm not going to watch this.

  • I love the ITAOTS jokes BECAUSE I love the album.

  • while they aren't new albums by any definition, the 2 albums by the Olivia Tremor Control have just been reissued. i think they're fantastic and nobody's ever heard of 'em. Seriously all, check them out! They're another Elephant 6 band!

  • awesome album one of my faves, its a bit laff out loud some times but its all part of its charms.

  • WILL SOMEONE PLEASE MASHUP THE NEEDLE DROP SONG WITH IN THE AEROPLANE OVER THE SEA!!!???

  • Ok now thats out of the way. You can review a great album that just came out, Nurses - Dracula. Please

  • "This album does have it's flaws" ... Wait, what? ... You didn't state them in the video.... Please do so.... Please. I want to see what you come up with.

  • I just have One! no make that Two questions Does he have a GirlFriend and Can he (ANTHONY) come to Mexico and go out on Date with me????

  • @MrLuvtacos he has a girlfriend.

  • I never thought this day would come. I heart you Anthony.

  • Review

Joe and the Yeatmans - Go Die In A Fire Cunt

  • IIIIIIIIII LOOOOOOOOOOOOVEEEEEEEEEE YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUU JEESUUUUUUUUUUUUUUS CHRIIIIIIIIIIIIIST

  • inspiring uploader comments

  • The vocals are horrible on this album.

  • awesome review anthony, NMH is one of my favorite bands, just because of this band! :D

    review Hey Rosetta!!! :)

    -please :P

  • April Ludgate loves this album.

  • i listened to this album three times after watching this review. i'm so happy that you reviewed it. your insight hasn't necessarily changed how i feel about this music, but has illuminated aspects that i wouldn't have originally paid any attention to. the fact that you just take the abstract nature of the lyrics at face value and create your own connections with them is exactly what i do, and it really works to create a unique emotional attachment to everything on ITAOTS. thank you! love you!!

  • Two-Head Boy is insane. The way he fills the track up with his voice, i didn't even notice it was an acoustic song the first time I heard it.

  • Ghost is one of the best songs I've ever heard, musically speaking. The way it all builds up, with every chord and instrument adding tension, the way every second it gets more powerful, the beautiful melodies that punctuate the song. That's not even getting into the lyricism, I'm just speaking purely from a musical standpoint.

  • This needs a sticky.

  • YES YOU DID IT. YOU FINALLY COMPLETED THE FINAL LEVEL.

  • When I listen to it, perhaps out of my own emotional history, a lot of it sounds to me like having loved and lost and wishing for redemption, but never reaching it. Honestly, I think the lyrics can be taken more straight forward than they are given credit for. As for OAI, I think it is more thematic as a whole. ITAOTS is like an emotional roller coaster and a mood/atmospheric roller coaster as well, but OAI sticks, more or less, to one feeling or idea, that is my take. I prefer ITA, but yeah

  • i never ever in my life thought i'd see this video. actually thought it was a joke vid.

  • have you listened to neurosis - through silver in blood? it's a gewd album!

  • I wonder what will happen if that tree gets chopped off....

  • I wonder how many people listen to album reviews of bands they've never heard of before.

  • @SpartanM622 Here's one. I'm definitely going to try this album out after watching this review.

  • OH MY GOD

  • Ever considered reviewing books? Wuthering Heights would be cool.

  • do seargent peppers or revolver

  • Nas illmatic

  • I've probably listened to this album once a week for the past 3 years. Dgaf

  • I'm glad you decided to do the review! Thank you and happy New Year!

  • Anthony I truly think you should make this a yearly thing, Do it before 2013.

It's fascinating to hear what you think about not so new stuff.

    Love your reviews.

    Forever. <3

  • i like listening to your reviews, i need someone to tell me how to feel about things

  • @prunty99 thats a wierd thing to say

  • @azorazan he's being a sarcastic asshole.

  • @azorazan haha I was thinking the exact same thing

  • Nailed it, well done Anthony!

  • this review was pretty much perfect for right now. I've been having trouble placing my finger on what it was that I liked about the album even though I've listened to it dozens of times over the past few months. you were hitting the nail on the head over and over again until you hammered it all the way into the wood but you kept beating it anyway. pretty much exactly like that for me.

    thanks fantanoman

  • I really love listening to your reviews, and it's fun when I already love something (like I do with this album) to hear what you think of it. But when I've never heard of an album it's a little daunting to see a 15 minute review, and a lot of the time I don't watch because I don't have the time... I don't know what I was aiming at here but I was thinking maybe you could sum up your review at the end, and put an annotation at the beginning to that point?
