I think Carly should have come into the song more tender, softer, to sell the love story and then waited until the song peaked at "I" then added her beautiful soulfulness the mid and end was excellent, but the beginning started out like a rocker, not bad, but not for this song. This was a competition and the judges tell these kids to "Bring it" and I think thats all she thought about when doing this song. I'm an old jazz girl and mid and end was very refreshing.
oversang, bad vowels, bad breath control... squeezed in the passagio ...ughhh no artisty whatsoever.... hmmm what is the meaning of the song? after listening to this I have absolutely no idea.... where was the delicate rememberance of a smile, a kiss, a tender moment of true love and the sandpipers song....
This isn't wonderful this sounds like someone trying to imitate Christina A...
I have agree with many of the comments listed here. She put way to much strength into her performance. This song should be done with delicacy and emotion. It's one of the most beautiful jazz standard ever recorded. CS reminded me of a bulldozer rumbling through a garden
Tony Bennett stated in an interview that he deliberated with this song for nine months over the tempo and complexity of this gem by Johnny Mandel, claiming that he had never spent this much time on any piece as this one. Carly Smithson is a great singer with this fresh rendition, took this song in a totally different direction.Oldtimers like myself, feel like she just penciled a moustache on the Mona Lisa.
YUCK! Why did she turn it into a POWER BALLAD? It's like turning the song Silent Night into a rock song. LOL! These idiots today in the music industry are totally clueless. "The Shadow of Your Smile" is SUPPOSED to be a DELICATE ROMANTIC song with SUBTLE NUANCES.
I used to really love Carly Smithson. Then she joined a band with 2 old Evanescence members and now it's basically a slap in the face to Amy Lee so I'm not too fond of her anymore
This is so angry. A beautiful song like this simply doesn't benefit in any way whatsoever from being shouted at an audience. I would like to hear her sing it softly and with feeling. This is not pleasant at all I'm afraid.
Katherine McPhee doesn't compare to this diva. Should have won AI, probably too good for the show. I'd love her to do an album of Jazz standards she has that versatilty.
This one is Sarah Vaughan's. And Connie Francis was surprisingly good. She kept it simple and emotional. Ms. Vaughan, step above only because she sounds like a human cello. This girl... good for an Idol performer. But NONE of them get subtly. They all ditch if for number of notes and the controlled yell. Wonder if it's they're pushed into this by Idol management.
@mbolduc i like it too.maybe i am biased. i liked almost all her interpretations when she was on american idol. if it's christina aguilera who sings the song like this, i might not be as blow away. so i guess i am really biased!
I think, in general, she has a very nice voice, but I don't think she captured the right.. emotion or feeling of the song. The song is about mourning for a lost love and looking back at happier times in the prime of a romance. To me, Carly just sounds more bitter and resentful about the man she's singing about; better yet, it just sounds like she's trying to show off her wide vocal range, taking away from the remorse of the song, in my opinion.
A very sad version of this tune - no taste and screaming at the audience on a gorgeous tune like this shows why I still listen to my old LPs which are 10,000 times better. I'm sure I'll catch it for this, but this is not singing to me. A singer is someone like Helen Merrill, Sue Raney, Joao Gilberto- doesn't seem to be any standards anymore... perhaps I'm just too old, but I know what beauty is- this 'aint it.
I almost cried upon listening to your voice in your great performance at American Idol. You sang it perfectly well with lots of feelings and confidence.
this song is originally made for a bass baritone, therefore, her voice is played into it well. As for the over singing is that not why you people watch the show, if she were plain she would not have made it as far as she did, perfect example Kelly Clarkson over sang every song she had and won.
...never understood why contestants shout in these contests (sometimes songs that don't need shouting at all !)...you should sing softer and show that you can sing stronger...never the opposite !!!...
I agree with those who said Connie Francis did it right. I prefer Peggy Lee's rendition , but Connie's is just fine. Now Carly has a powerful voice which would serve her better on those songs that sound best being belted out. For example, "The Wheel of Fortune." Now I expect all you Carly fans to jump all over me for this...but in 70+ years as a music aficionado, I've learned something, I think.
She should have won, she had the best voice (this song is proof). Idol was embarrassed when her previous record deal came out and had to make sure she didn't win. But she was the best, a clear standout.
Interesting, great interpretation ( ...), great voice /techn. But dont fu*k the magic of the lyrics and ... why is it, this performence, that short [?] Important* moment at 1:05 /1:09 /1:13 > Proofs: she got it, there ; ) Give me a full version.
"IMHO, the very best, most original version i've ever heard hands down of the shadow of your smile is by Jonny Fair & The Xtrordinaires. It's still up here last i checked, give it a listen & you'll see what i mean. Very smooth & warm. Made me want to pour a martini & sit on the couch with appetisers & that special someone... *smile*
@surawudhman : I agree. She's doing a pop version, not the proper jazz version. Sounds like she's going to beat up that lover. Supposed to be a tender and gentle song. She does sing well though, she just has to save that approach for another song.
Personally, I could never vote for someone with all those tats....makes her look like a tramp, IMO, even though it bugs some of her groupies when I say so.
I remember seeing this live and thinking that was one of the few really worldclass performances that I've seen on Idol. Only Streisand's recorded version is better and Carly was sick with only a week to perform and was singing live in front of Simon Cowell. Simon was way off the mark.
Absolutelly unproffesional performance. This lady has strong voice but really doesnt know what to do with it. The proffesionalism is not how you can "push" and "scream" , but how you cotroll the softest notes. Obviousely, Carly doesnt do that at all.
I like Carly's version better. Connie's is so soft in places that it is somewhat irritating. It reminds me of Kathie Lee Gifford- a pretty voice, but no power. Carly was sick with bronchitis and the flu when she sang this. I think it was better than Connie's although she could have subdued the tempo, but remember AI has a time limit, so maybe that's why the tempo is so fast.
ukbentley WOW !! Now I see what you mean about the Connie Francis version. It is simply stunning. So, yes you're right, this is angry. I liked this version before I heard Connie sing it. Now I'm converted, there's no comparison. I've been missing so much. Thank you.
See Connie Francis Shadow Of Your Smile. It is sung how it was written, and done so sympathetically, with feeling. There really is no need to mess with these classics.
Much, much too harsh. This is supposed to reflect love but it sounds angry. Also, it's a quite lovely melody in itself, it doesn't need any of the vocal acrobatice so prevelent these days. Shame.
This is flawless. All through the early portion of audtions I really didn't see what the big deal was with Carly. After this performance, I was hooked. I do wish she would have done more mainstream material on the show. I realize she's a wanna-be rocker, but that voice is so perfect for other genres, too. Pure talent.
I don't know, she's pushing the song a little hard. I think I'd like her rendition a lot more if she didn't oversing it so much. Check out Jazz Great, Sarah Vaughan, in a 1964 live recording of this song. Not only does she do without Smithson's raw edge, but she creates a lot of magic with such a pretty little song.
You don't sound terribly bright, perhaps you would be better served if you didn't display your ignorance on YouTube video comment areas. If having tattoos makes a woman a slut in your opinion, then clearly you have no clue what that word means.
McPhee would do well with this song. This one is right in her wheel house. Of all the songs that Carly did on Idol this one seems like the one Katharine would be most comfortable with.
Carly doesn't shout, she sings. There are about two lines toward the end of her live performance of Total Eclipse of the Heart which could be called shouting but is still sounds pretty damn good.
It's called belting, big notes from the chest voice and Carly does it with control of pitch is pretty spectacular. Shouting actually sounds quite a bit different.
Just about the only completely softly sung song she did on the whole run on Idol was Here You Come Again for Dolly Parton theme week.
OMG she has such a beautiful voice. this was a good choice for her. she may have shouted on other songs, but this must have been her best performance on the show!
It particular song is actually a very, very strange choice for American Idol. This powered-up version that Carly sings is certainly a different take on The Shadow of Your Smile compared to say, Sinatra's version, which is the version I'm most familiar with. Most of the Idol audience likely never heard this before in their lives though. I liked it, but Carly could surely sing this song in an understated manner too but I don't think American Idol is the venue for that version, or likely any
Carly has a powerful voice and herein lies the problem. She simply overpowered this song. Sentimental touch and tonal delivery is just as important as vocal power.
Carly did sing this on American Idol, THIS IS HER singing on American Idol because there are no studios for these this is the microphone feed of her singing on IDOL! This girl is simply the best I've heard on this show...ever.
Ok, this has to be her best performance hands down. She completely altered the melody and interpreted it amazingly! Man, it is such a shame that she got voted off with a voice like that. Voices like this don't come around very often.
I won't have to picture any more Top 3's ever again. I've been told by people in the industry for years that Idol is rigged but after Carly Smithson went under the bus I'm giving up on this guilty pleasure. The bloom been off the Idol rose for quite a few years now.
If this were purely a singing competition (as Simon has stated it is in previous years), Carly should win hands down. Unfortunately, it obviously is not- when judging observations focus on appearance, choice of song , and other "touchy feely" items that have absolutely nothing to do with vocal abilities.
PS To the poster of this clip, the audio quality on this was absolutely outstanding- can you share with us whether you used any special hardware/software to achieve this clarity ? Thanks.
Let's not bicker, Carly is awesome and for her Idol will really be a launching pad. When you've got bigwigs like David Foster saying "I love, love, love her voice." I'm thinking she it getting a contract out of this irrespective of where she ends up. If RCA wants her they get first dibs.
She's not winning...sorry. She's good but Brooke (blech) will be the last woman standing. I'm afraid it's a man's year this year. They have the excitement and votes.
I actually love Carly and can't stand one thing about Brooke. My issue is Brooke should be long gone. But she's still really popular. She has like a 7 note range (and that's pushing it) and she's really freaking annoying. My final two would be David Cook and Carly, with David winning of course ;)
Sang it perfect girl - you idiots who say she over sang need ear wax removal stat !

Thanks.

Nope, I did not use any special software for this video. :)

They have the excitement and votes.

are you actually joking! i didnt even think brooke would be in the top 12. carly and david cook are CLEARLY the best singers this year.
mungolee 3 years ago
you like brooke i like carly but i like brooke too but i like carly better so carly will be the last women standing carly will won this game

I actually love Carly and can't stand one thing about Brooke. My issue is Brooke should be long gone. But she's still really popular. She has like a 7 note range (and that's pushing it) and she's really freaking annoying. My final two would be David Cook and Carly, with David winning of course ;)
