I think Carly should have come into the song more tender,softer, to sell the love story and then waited until the song peaked at "I" then added her beautiful soulfulness the mid and end was excellent, but the beginning started out like a rocker, not bad, but not for this song. This was a competition and the judges tell these kids to "Bring it" and I think thats all she thought about when doing this song. I'm an old jazz girl and mid and end was very refreshing.

This one is Sarah Vaughan's. And Connie Francis was surprisingly good. She kept it simple and emotional. Ms. Vaughan, step above only because she sounds like a human cello. This girl... good for an Idol performer. But NONE of them get subtly. They all ditch if for number of notes and the controlled yell. Wonder if it's they're pushed into this by Idol management.

I think, in general, she has a very nice voice, but I don't think she captured the right.. emotion or feeling of the song. The song is about mourning for a lost love and looking back at happier times in the prime of a romance. To me, Carly just sounds more bitter and resentful about the man she's singing about; better yet, it just sounds like she's trying to show off her wide vocal range, taking away from the remorse of the song, in my opinion.

A very sad version of this tune - no taste and screaming at the audience on a gorgeous tune like this shows why I still listen to my old LPs which are 10,000 times better. I'm sure I'll catch it for this, but this is not singing to me. I agree with those who said Connie Francis did it right. I prefer Peggy Lee's rendition , but Connie's is just fine. Now Carly has a powerful voice which would serve her better on those songs that sound best being belted out. For example, "The Wheel of Fortune." Now I expect all you Carly fans to jump all over me for this...but in 70+ years as a music aficionado, I've learned something, I think.

I remember seeing this live and thinking that was one of the few really worldclass performances that I've seen on Idol. Only Streisand's recorded version is better and Carly was sick with only a week to perform and was singing live in front of Simon Cowell. Simon was way off the mark.

I like Carly's version better. Connie's is so soft in places that it is somewhat irritating. It reminds me of Kathie Lee Gifford- a pretty voice, but no power. Carly was sick with bronchitis and the flu when she sang this. I think it was better than Connie's although she could have subdued the tempo, but remember AI has a time limit, so maybe that's why the tempo is so fast.

This is flawless. All through the early portion of audtions I really didn't see what the big deal was with Carly.  After this performance, I was hooked. I don't know, she's pushing the song a little hard. I think I'd like her rendition a lot more if she didn't oversing it so much. Check out Jazz Great, Sarah Vaughan, in a 1964 live recording of this song. Not only does she do without Smithson's raw edge, but she creates a lot of magic with such a pretty little song.

Carly doesn't shout, she sings. There are about two lines toward the end of her live performance of Total Eclipse of the Heart which could be called shouting but is still sounds pretty damn good.

It's called belting, big notes from the chest voice and Carly does it with control of pitch is pretty spectacular. Shouting actually sounds quite a bit different.

Just about the only completely softly sung song she did on the whole run on Idol was Here You Come Again for Dolly Parton theme week.

It particular song is actually a very, very strange choice for American Idol. This powered-up version that Carly sings is certainly a different take on The Shadow of Your Smile compared to say, Sinatra's version, which is the version I'm most familiar with. Most of the Idol audience likely never heard this before in their lives though. If this were purely a singing competition (as Simon has stated it is in previous years), Carly should win hands down. Unfortunately, it obviously is not- when judging observations focus on appearance, choice of song , and other "touchy feely" items that have absolutely nothing to do with vocal abilities.
