When a person dies, they die. There's no such thing as spirit or soul, your existence ends. That was the whole purpose and message that Death Note was trying to sent out, that you only have one life.

Plus it was also in the manga stating that once a person die, their existence end. Episode 1, Ryuk said that you don't go to heaven or hell when you die. In the manga Light found out that it's because there IS NO heaven or hell, you simply die. Which is why he refuse to die no matter what.
