  • i used to think he was singing "I got no love, no love in Korea..."...lol

  • All we need is producer Ted Templeman saying over the studio mic "Come on Dave, gimme a break"

  • this would make a great car alarm...lol "Waaaaahhh!!!!..waaaah!!!! AYYYY YAHHHHHH!!!!!"

  • Wow, the compression to tape is so much. Must be like 5:1 ratio with a fast attack time. Noticed he overloads the pre amp several times.

  • Thumbs up if you're listening to this 'cuz of Opie and Anthony

  • @1:25 -.-

  • He sounds as good today as then.

  • Bottom line:

MOST singers sound weird when they're de-coupled from the accompanying music.

No doubt, DLR is an odd duck and isn't the most technically-proficient vocalist, and years of drinking and smoking haven't done his upper register any favors, but what he has in spades is charisma. He's a born entertainer.

NOBODY could've done a better job in VH in those early days. Talk about lightning in a bottle.

  • I love that this was done for YouTube. Thank you. Wow. I am stunned that this original, stand-alone track is available somewhere for someone to extract it and submit it on here. DLR's multi-phonic screams are more fully revealed, and in my opinion, so is the ramble "G-D baby I'm only gon' tell you one time ahh-aaahhh." For the first time in my life, I can actually make that part out.

  • how does he do that howl?? anybody know?? him and Axl Rose will always blow my mind with their howls its like wtf how you doing that

  • For all you haters he's not overdubbing. David Lee Roth does multi phonic screams. It sounds the same live

  • @vanhalenfannumber1 multi phonic? lol xD

  • Love it. Sounds like a Madman without music. haha

  • If a vocal compressor and reverb are effects that make you people think make him as a bad singer, probably shouldn't be listening to van halen anyway

  • This is cool though, this is the height of his vocal power & there couldn't have been anybody, Sammy included that could have done a better job - Van Halen 1 - 1984. I wish he still had these pipes!

  • @TheHeetmizer "I wish he still had these pipes!"

Likewise. The physical aging process is a human being's worst enemy in many respects.

  • A charismatic frontman...NOT a good vocalist.

  • @jdrummys He's a perfectly decent vocalist for this type of music. What are you looking for? Whitney Houston?

  • lol so bad

  • man, that whistle is epic! Never noticed how it trails off with all that vibrato.

great stuff. Hagar wishes he was this good.

  • This audio just lets you know that David Lee Roth is a fucking whack job.....if some homeless guy outside a liquor store were making these same noises not only would nobody be surprised, but also nobody would give a shit.

  • @oldschoolnewshit Based on your comment, try this: Start the video and imagine it's a homeless guy stumbling around talking to a half-empty vodka bottle. Then try to make it past the halfway mark without laughing until it hurts..

  • @Chronomorte Wow, you know what...the lyrics are perfect....this is actually the homeless man's national anthem! Let's break it down real quick "I live my life like there's no tomorrow"....check, homeless people do that...."all I've got I had to steal.." check...talking about begging and borrowing....check....crazy noises...check....simple life ain't so simple....check, homeless people have simple lives......more insane ramblings and noises...check....it all checks out!

  • @oldschoolnewshit David Lee Roth was the first homeless man with a golden voice. And by golden I mean crazy as all fuck.

  • after turning up the volume nice and loud, I can't tell if Diamond Dave's signature screams are really 2-3 simulatneous notes sung in one take, or if the extremely high note of the scream is overdubbed on top of what sounds like a regular old falsetto.

  • @rockfreak611 Wow, Diamond Dave is more talented than I gave him credit for and I thank whoever posted this especially to show me how wrong I was about him originally. DD is getting the effect from an organic technique kinda like "throat singing", I believe--this type of singing is common in certain places like Asia but DD is clearly using it for a demonic effect for his shriek. Janis Joplin did something similar with a shriek to cap off a high note for the end of songs.

  • @shawntoh there's no doubt in my mind that DD can do that - he's done it live and on almost every early VH song. but this song in particular has a lot of studio effects placed on top of his screams, so it's very hard to distinguish them as one voice here. i agree, DD is better than most people give him credit for.

  • Only a genius puts a Kazoo in a heavy metal anthem

  • that's some funny shit - he sounds retarded

  • waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa eeeeyyyeaaaaaaaah! but he never sings the name of the song

god damn it baby im not gonna lie to you im only gonna tell you one timee aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!

if he and james hetfield were to have a conversation it would take forever

  • @bfusco11 He doesn't sing the title because Michael Anthony, Eddie, and Alex sang the title in the background vocals. They harmonize "...runnin' with the devil!!!"

  • 0:44 Scream Dave!!

  • I've been listening to this EVERY day as part of my "daily smile" routine

    love the whistle lol

  • @queenie9t what else is part of your "daily smile" routine? please!

  • Andrew Dice Clay at 0:01

  • @marluc32 LOL

  • 85,100 of these views are mine. Can't. Stop. Watching. It WOOOOOO! WOOO! AHHHHHHHH YAH!

  • It rubs the lotion on its skin, or else it gets the hose again

  • 1:48 !!!!

  • One of the funniest things I've ever listened to.

  • KA KA KA KO- KANE!!!!

  • did he have a blowwhistle?

  • now that's a rape face woody would be proud of

  • This is what he sounds like after a couple hours at the bar lol.

  • Doctor Rockzo, ladies and gents.

  • @drummergabe I DO COCAINE!

  • @drummergabe KUH KUH YEAAAAAH!

  • Suddenly the lyrics to that track are nice and clear. Cool to hear this!

  • What he does at 0:48 has boggled me for decades. He's like hitting 2 or 3 notes at once, how the flying fuck??? Can anyone explain that?

  • Comment removed

  • It's probably a similar phenomenon to mongolian throat singing, multiphonics where the vocals resonate in such a way that the foundation tone of the sung note becomes unstable allowing the note's harmonic series or overtones to feature. Woodwind players can create similar sounds on clarinest / saxophones etc.

  • @c0ngo Thats actually what I was thinking. Thanks. Now I just gotta figure out how on earth to do it! lol

  • @shelbyfanss It's called overdubbing, which is when a musician goes back to a recording and sing the same thing (sometimes at different harmonies or w.e like dave did) to add some "layer" to it.

  • @rockandrollerist That is NOT multitracking man. I've seen him do it live, and I've seen several other singers do it live.

  • @shelbyfanss k, then im no help lol

  • @rockandrollerist

No ..... It's possible to use multiple "aspects" (I don't the exact term) of your vocal folds when singing one note. When you belt and scream like he is doing that's one way to do it. The overall effect is accentuated by use of eq and maybe some other harmonic modulator, but it's not overdubs. That would be an incredibly tedious process and doesn't seem worth it.

  • @tdey1618 I was just guessing since i couldn't believe someone could actually do it lol, thanks for the explanation

  • @shelbyfanss It is possible (Jim Gillette and Jaime Vendera do it), but I have no idea how XD

Then again, this could be the work of a good studio.

  • Thank you for this glorious masterpiece.

  • i love it man... he was awesome in concert in the pre hagar days...whats with that kazzo or whistle thing?

  • David is no singer that`s for sure.the intrinsic health of his singing voice is ludicrous!! .but who cares?the man is a genius he's a`vocal stylist`,hard rock`s Al Jolson.(as he states in his own biography..and hilarious must read.)I also find David has a formidable soul that really gave life to those songs..a`là James Brown stylings..spiced with some Tom Jones. face it.Dave is unconventionally awesomeness incorporated.cheers Dave..well done.

  • just keep hitting 8

  • Lil John @1:38

  • IM ROCKXO THE ROCK AND ROLL CLOW!!!! I DO COCAIN!!!

  • The 10-15 second pauses are awesome.

  • :44 -he pushed out the turd, 3:10 -he looked into the bowl with amazement

  • :044 -he pushed out the turd, 3:10 -he looked into the bowl with amazement

  • Man, I would have liked to watch Dave when he recorded these vocals. Awesome picture by the way!

  • Crazy you can hear the bleed in the background. Gotta love analog/old school recordings

  • That has nothing to do with analog studios....those are his headphones bleeding through the mic and that commonly happens even with digital studios.

  • @barneycockburn What you're hearing in the background is most likely coming from his head phones. It's not bleed through.

  • Was that the Nature Boy @1:52?

  • you tube needs a Love button to press ......\m/

  • So this is what its like to be there when they mix it. Dave must have had a set of headphones. AHAHHHHA YA . Im Running w the devil bhatch'es.

  • That is what they call "The Real Deal" my friends.

  • Wow, after listening to this, we can see how much the different instruments compliment each other. Imagine if this was released in 78?

  • Amazing. I have always wanted to hear the original masters without mixdown. This is like the fn lost sea scrolls of rock n roll. Dave was a power musical genius and he may not even have been aware of his level of true musical skill. This proves that singing like this cannot in any way damage your voice if done right. He sings better than he ever has. Almost like some sureal freakish version of him in a captains jacket with his 1000 yard stare just ripping it up. He is about to release another!

  • It's no wonder he lost his voice. It gives me a sore throat just listening to it.

  • ha daves facial expression is like "c'mon baby sleep with me"

  • As someone who sings rock I can tell you that these vocals are dry without effects. This is just full throat singing from a man with incredible pipes. That double note effect is just a rare sound that i have experienced myself before. Dave had a gift for sure.

  • This is like being IN on the narration(musically) of one of the best rock albums EVER!

People used to use Led Zep the same way but , VH ups it to the next Gen. level

  • Holy Cow! How the heck did you get access to this? I thought only the record producers had this kind of thing.

  • this isn't great by any means, but it worked - right place, right time. i think it's funny more than anything else to hear all of the yips and yells stripped down like this.

  • AAAAAH YAAAAH

  • This clip let me FINALLY decipher the line "And now I'm living at a pace that kills"...

  • @WrestleWriter HAHAHA! Totally.

  • let me say this guys, even if dave did have a harmonizer on this song, he is still hitting the notes.Watch the older live clips of the song. It is his whistle register, the effect is one of a train whistle, the vocal cords partially collapse creating a flap over the main chords that vibrates creating the second note. This fades with age as the tissue becomes fatty and agressive over use also deteriates it faster. Both the case with Roth. A Little Aint enough, last album he had a hint of it.

  • Facinating.

  • DR. ROCKZO IS REAL

  • @DogFlavor does that make me a dinosaur remembering DLR. He is a legendary showman!

  • horrifying but surprised none the least to see that david lee roth can actually throat sing...weird

  • HAAAAAAAYEAH AHAAAAAAAAYEAH AHAAAAAAAAAYEAH AHAAAAAAAAYEAH....OOOOO

  • LEGEND!!

  • Sounds like he's shitting bricks.

  • Goddamn it baby You know I ain't lying to you I'm only gonna tell you one time IIIIIII YEAH!!! Never picked up on that before.

  • no effects??? there is some harmonizer when he screams really high...

  • @bethoveen3, no there isn't. It's his sick ass vibrato.

  • @gwkeller really? listen at 2:30, that's not vibrato

  • no effects, you can make your voice harmonize like that when you push out the air a certain way, it's really cool, hard to do though

  • @3283gieni you dont hear it cause you are not trainned to do so ....hamonizer was a secret weapon for many many producer before it got comercialize....i doudt that it sounds like this when you do it buddy

  • @bethoveen3 Speaking as a sound-engineer, you don't need training to hear the effect. Maybe spelling though, specially if you're going to patronise people in public. It could just as well be multitracking. Who knows? Definitely not you though.

  • @ArthurFWTaylor Well apparently not everybody hears it....so that's the diference between a sound engenier that know whats going on and an the general public....and you said you dont need training to hear the effect , there is effect yes, dont tell me you dont hear that high pitched processed harmonys cause if you dont you have nothing to do as a sound engineer, sorry

  • thumbs up if you watched this in your music class!!

  • Granted this is hilarious but if you think that dave cant sing take your favorite artist and listen to the dry vocal track lol

  • that was fricking great , true no one sang like dave

  • Holy shit can you believe he got paid to sing "Oh Yea" 10,000 times . He looks like he just snorted a few rocks of cocaine seconds before this picture was taken.

  • 1 minute 26 seconds is the most white trash awsome shit i have ever heard.

  • Lol, sounds like he's at a party or something in this, it's great =D

  • YYYEEEAAAHHHH YEA YEAAAAAA AAHHH YEAAHH

  • Omg I rem him in late 70's /80's and time has flown by, he's looking a bit like a prune now lol
