In Chinese martial arts, this grip is considered the normal grip and the 'upright' grip is called a 'reverse' grip.
The reason for this is that it is extremely useful in 'controlling' an enemy's limbs, once you strike and if they block, you pull back with the dagger and this will lock, trap, cut and control all at once.
The one in the shiny helmet is a Knight. =which is why is winning so much.
