Simplification IS a preference - therefore deciding your way or the GUI way is a question of preference. There is also no good way to assess which one is simpler! Do a poll and find out whether people think it is simpler to open a program and click on a radio button, or browse throught registry and insert a weird string. The only icon I have on my desktop is the Recycle Bin. Everything else is either pinned to the task bar or the start menu.
