@kenny, he is scooping up loose coal from the bottom, and then you push it out at the end of the cut. The miner will then load it out on to a shuttle car before he starts the next cut.
The job pays well but, it is hard dirty work and there are always people getting hurt. I know several people that have been hurt in WV mines.
