I like this video, the only thing I really disagree with, is that if you are going absolutely bare bones basic you can get just a circular contractor saw instead of a table saw, they are cheaper and more safe imo, also I think you should have mentioned table saw kickbacks if you get a crappy cheep one, I don't know if it has happened to you but it happened to me and it broke a few ribs (granted I should not have been standing behind it but I was like the beginner I was at the time)
Love your videos, Steve! I'm an absolute beginner with zero knowledge or experience, but you have inspired me! Thank you for the passion and excitement you bring to your videos, love it!
i would like to mount my router to a table too but there is a problem the my router has a springloaded hifht adjustment system and it has a switch the needs to be pressed in all the time :/ any sugestions ?
A good apprentice program is essential with HAND TOOLS.
You learn respect for the Master and his tools.
If you have a passion for woodworking, you must always start at the beginning.
Use sharp tools and they will leave a beautiful surface with no sanding.
I so look forward to the day where I can set up a shop in a building that does not have electricity. Just a wood stove to drive out the dampness and windows to let light and air in.
If you can't approach the high quality of these old school woodworkers (by your own admission) WITH powertools - then why bother with them? perhaps they are just getting in your way and preventing you from approaching that high quality by over-mechanising your woodworking projects.
Enjoyed your video. I do find it very helpful. I enjoy painting wood pieces and would like to make some simple toy boxes. At least now I know which saws do what and what I might need. Good think my dad has a whole garage of saws that he never uses!!
Nooooo! the handsaw went in the bin. I've just completed a makeup box using only handtools (yes, it's a nightmare).
My workshop is the kitchen so i'm not keen on investing in too much, but after watching your latest vid (routing for beginners) i've dusted off my dad's old router and made a small table for it.
Is it safe(ish) to just mount a jigsaw the same way for small pieces of wood?
I's all your fault If I had not seen your video I would not be i the bad books with "she who must be obeyed" I spend too much time in the shed and spending too much on tools but it's worth it G'day from down under
Really enjoyed watchin this video and it kinda made me feel like i started my shop in the right way cause thats pretty much the 4 main tools i started out with. Now I have all the trimmings like lathes, drill presses, mitre saws and lots of other fun tools to. Now my only problem is i need a bigger workshop!! Lol!
Steve, I LOVE the way you think. Nut I will go ahead and say the one thing you left out (I'm guessing you did this not to piss-off anyone). Wood workers are human, and like all humans, are basically lazy. That is why the powertool was invinted, and why better and better ones keep coming along.
Thanks for this video. Our son is thinking of starting some simple projects. We own some tools, and we do not want to spend a lot for him to start. This was very helpful.
Hi, i'm from brazil, and i really liked this video, i already saw a lots of videos on the internet of wood work, many yours, many from noho91(Japanese guy very talented), Marc Spagnolo (I hate that guy, he has all kinds of tools, every thing is perfect in his videos and i am envy him for that! :) kidding he is great!), i like your perspective for just simple works, having fun doing wood work, as you say... for Mere Mortals!
Good work, good videos,... and IWood was very funny!
Nice videos Steve. Me and my oldest daughter like watching them. I have put together a seemingly nice "little" woodshop over the years and have proved that you don't need all the really expensive power tools to make things look good. My shop is only 15' by 15' and we get by ok doing our work in there. All the tools we use are just the basic run of the mill stuff that didn't cost a whole lot. I did use to have that same Skill table saw when I first started. Now use a Ryobi contractors saw.
Aside from designing the art in 3D on a computer and having the carving process automated, has there been much if any innovation in the carving portion of woodworking (like was in your field trip video)? It seems to be, to do that delicate work with the human form on your pieces you'd have to use hand tools exclusively.
And I concur with what you say. So come on you tyros. Get started. If your cheap, crappy router breaks down, what have you lost? A few bucks. You probably waste more than that buying candy for the kids!
Cheers Steve and good on you.
'Lead on Mack Dough' (Pronounced as in rough Ho, Ho!)
Dude, this is my first time to see woodworking beaning tools or how to start up, at first i was thinking that i should get the best tools available in the market then when i watched your video i'm considering cheap tools to start with and that will grow up with time to get better tools if needed.
i think drill and impact driver or even press drill could be at the beginning too :)
thanks again for the video and looking forward to more techniques.
Love the enthusiasm, and that sarcastic sense of humor lol. Nice video my man. I actually have the building, all the tools, and the ability to setup shop immediately, thanks to my father-in-law's business. I was actually curious as to the bare necessities, and this video nailed it.
im beginning doing basic woodworking ive got a dremel 4000 with the drill press station and plunge router and a jig saw and a skill saw {main tools for woodworking got alot more mechanic style tools} im thinking about getting a table saw or miter saw which would you recommend table or miter?
I just got a skil router and a circular saw for Christmas from my wife because I was interested in woodworking but realy didn't know how to get started...Thanks for the videos/// I needed this info..I still need a few tools but this is gonna get me started...
Hey Steve! Just wanted to let you know how much I really enjoy your videos... I got into woodworking a few months ago; my first project was a workbench that I assembled with a borrowed drill, hacksaw and a couple of 2x4s. Since then I've accumulated a bunch of power tools off craigslist for mad cheap, and you're absolutely right--I haven't touched my handsaw since. All your stuff is incredibly entertaining... thank you for everything you put out, and I really look forward to more!
I have a miter saw, circular saw, jigsaw, grinder, and lots of warped wood. Their kinda mine until my dad gets back. I was thinking of making a doghouse for my German shepherd.
Measuring tapes aren't tools they're instruments. So that disqualifies them right there from the discussion.Any crafter that relies upon such devices will create projects of crude quality. Consider developing better techniques, like say measuring part B off of part A? Although Norm's diagonal measuring trick is at times handy for larger carcasses, rulers are good for size estimates, and I can do that in one go. I'd like to say more on the topic but I am out of characters 2 1
actually number 1 is designing a project number 2 is using math to think how much wood and how long are the pieces that you will use on your project then comes the cutting and other stuff that you said
You threw away a hand saw early in the video, but I see several others hung on the walls behind you. Seriously, noise is a concern in Europe where houses are very close together. That mandates tactics (quieter power tools, hand tools where power tools would be too noisy, etc) to keep noise to a minimum. Amazing what can be done without a table saw or powered sander.
you should have your own tv show.........funny dude. Just came across your videos after deciding in going to setup as a self employted carpenter to to get my own experience after luking for work for quite a while. Ive did a course at college some years ago. These vids will help.
I really enjoy your "poor man" apprough, I do woodproject from time to time but nothing to big.
I like your way of thinking more than a lot of other people, most people dont like to do anything, no matter what subject. You just try to get people to do some woodworking projects, what are awesome.
(nevermind the fact that most people are to lazy to make there own picture frame (for example) but I guess we understand how much value it adds )
i went on youtube to find a prodject to do with this scrap pine that i used to make a corner tv stand and ive been watching ur vids for the past hour now. KEEP IT UP! and maybe you will be the next Norm.
Table Saws are very dangerous and any beginner should seek out many sources for information on what can go wrong and why. Fear not, but don't go into it blissfully ignorant.
@orlandofriend Just as a lion is not an over-sized house cat, table saws are not overgrown hand saws. Some of the worste cuts ever come from the hand saw. As my buddy HillBilly put's it, "Them thar tools gots sharp pointy teeth, and they don't give a rats' ass 'bout your finger's, so you better."
Dude! You were into that! You about got me to go out and get some more equipment. I used to watch my Grandpa make all kinds of stuff, all my childhood furniture was made by him. I love and appreciate woodworking. Now, next time only drink 4 Red-BullEspressos be fore making a video. : )
Yes! Pressure from hand-tool purists isn't a problem as much as from the other direction--woodworkers who managed to land a sponsor trying to get you to buy tons of pricey gear. It's hard for a new ww to know from them what's really necessary and what ain't. See the wood whisperer's vids for example. It's corrupting and sucks a lot of the fun out of the tinkerer/casual hobbyist approach of knocking things together with whatever tools are at hand.
@ndktube Excellent point. I'm going to guess that 99% of all woodworkers, like me, are hobbiests and are simply in it for fun. Most woodworking books, magazines, and tv shows seem to focus on elaborate projects and use really fancy tools that frankly, most of us can't justify or don't care to invest in.
sorry not trying to be mean . but mounting a standard router on a router table is something you want to think about first.I have personally destroyed three routers. The reason why? because I didn't realize that the dust eventually works it's way into the motor bearings and it burns out. use dust removal and it helps to actually get a real table router. Or you'll just burn up your router eventually.
You forgot to mention the clamps you will need for gluing (sp?) up. Nice video, though. I get tired of hearing all the talk about "how it used to be done" BTW - my 4 year old is a big fan of yours!
Thanks for not being one of those annoying hand tool purists! I knew you wasn't that way anyhow, I watch all your videos and really enjoy them. Lots of fun, my favorite video you did was set to Michael Franti - Hey Ya!
I paused the video, went to DIY shop and bought a Saw.. now I have to throw it away. :D
