I actually looked up the laws pertaining to fire arms when I was building mine. A gun is considered to be anything that propels a projectile using explosives or compressed gas.

Coil guns use electromagnetic force so they are not considered to be firearms and therefore all firearm laws don't pertain to them, even though coil guns can be lethal.

There is a weapon in use/ in development similar concept to this, it is called Metal Storm. It is a railgun that shoots explosive rounds.

No, you retard. Metal Storm uses gunpowder. The gunpowder is just ignited by electric sparks rather than a mechanical hammer. The idea is to reduce the number of moving parts and increase the firing rate and reliability.

this is a pretty interesting little gun.. he's worked on some of the finer points.. like a familure magazine for loading the projectiles and also worked out a nice housing cover, clearly he's not focusing on power yet this is just a test i would imagine power can be worked on later.

a lot of you tube videos focus only on power, which i think is short sighted... dont even see the gun in some of those videos..

If that's your problem why dont you try a shorter pulse. The coil should only be energized for a small fraction of a second while the caps discharge. If the coil is on for too long momentum will be decreased.

To end the "coilgun sniper rifle" discussion, most coilguns are small desktop or handheld devices. Therefore, they do not have the power to really be a real gun. As technology gets better, then these will get more powerful. FYI the size of a coilgun with the range and power of a sniper rifle today could may well be the size of a SUV.

Actually a large amount of inaccuracy in ballistics is do to the expanding gas as it leaves the barrel with the round. Rifling (groves in the barrel to spin the bullet) helps, but no gas, less problems. Besides, rifling a coil gun and a normal firearm are no different.

A really good application for this technology, would be with the military's failed rocket bullet experiments. They are simply bullets with little rocket motors. They are superior @ 100yds+ to reg bullets, but won't break skin at 10 feet. Power would need to be upped, but it would give superior ammo carrying abilities. More rounds, less weight.

Cool, but it doesn't seem fast enough yet to be an adequate replacement for a normal pistol. Also shooting at maybe sand, watermelon, or a phone book would be good to demonstrate penetration power.
