for Eiffel Tower to The Louvre, i'd hae suggested getting ko'd and bundled into a van, tied and gagged and blindfolded, at the Eiffel Tower and having the van driver take you to the back door of the Louvre and releasing you
Alan's buzzer is the them from a BBC comedy program called Steptoe and son which ran from 1962 to 1974. The show's premise was used for the American show Sanford and Son.
@leckerwurstbrot It's also the theme music for an old radio show called Dick Barton - Secret Agent, which is what I always imagined Sir Digby was humming to himself.
Brits persist in referring to the Pilgrims as The Pilgrim Fathers, as if only men were on the Mayflower. It's a puzzle why they haven't updated that over the years. It's like something out of the 1950s! lol Obviously, to Americans anyway, these were families who wanted to colonize not a group of male Spanish explorers looking for gold or often-solitary Frenchmen looking for pelts.
@cywyhot Everyone knows what you're talking about when you say Pilgrim Fathers. I had a feminist lecturer who used to stop me whenever I said 'mankind' and correct me with 'humankind', until I asked her how it affects what we're talking about.
@cywyhot I think pretty much anyone who uses the phrase "Pilgrim Fathers" knows it refers periphrastically to a group of men and women, not just some men with the ability to generate children at will :)
I will write a major exam in history in about an hour. I was studying all morning. Just now I opened my browser to print a few pages. I ended up here. I hope I'll learn something useful...
@janeeyre1990 lol Yeah that piece of music is used alot in comedy programs, I'm not sure where it originally comes from but I know its from the black and white era, Monty Python used it alot during thier sketch show too
@happyjellyfish I'd just like to note, in terms of colonialism, religion and priests were the biggest pushers for fair and (what is now the common idea of) moral treatment of natives - especially in the 19th century in Africa.
@Gleebo As a Central American who furthermore has specialised in conquest and colonisation writers and literatures, I'll rotundly disagree with that. Read more.
I also don't understand where your comment came from, since I merely said that I enjoyed Alan's silliness and that I like the commentary this program offers on religion in contemporary history. Your point is a non-issue. On top of inaccurate.
@MuninRaven It's called "Devil's Gallop". It was the theme tune from the radio adventures of Dick Barton and continues to be used in British comedy chase scenes to this day. Helpful?
@MrLazyEyes It's an accent thing . Most Brits say Newfoundland without pronouncing the *ou* in found. Thus it ends up sounding a bit like New-Finland.
@MrWalker1212 just replace Sean Lock (who i adore) with Phil Jupitus. He's quite intelligent and when he and bill bailey lock their sights on Stephen, things get much MUCH funnier.
