this is for indoor climbing only, where climbing conditions are controlled and safety is overseen "Learn some basic safety tips for indoor rock climbing". it is perfectly safe to do what they are doing......indoors.
Come on guys stop bad mouthing this vid, yes we are aware we was tought to tie in with the figure 8 knot and not use the karabiner, they obvs teach differently to the rest of us. if it works for him then who cares aslong as its safe
This is true for the "old school climber," but In this case, It is much quicker and just as effective to go from one rope to another with a carabiner. No sacrifice has been made on safety.
"Clip it where it says TIE IN here" Boy, I'm no expert rock climber, nor really a novice, but that advice alone makes me wonder if expertvillage is credible at all.
I'm really wanting to try rock climbing and skydiving someday, but looks like these videos are sub-par instructing videos. Maybe general information at best, but nothing more.
The big loop in the center is for belaying and the two smaller loops are for tieing in. For any new people out there DO NOT LISTEN TO THESE VIDEOS. And those walls are like 10 feet high you really dont need a rope for that. Almost all gyms make you tie in not clip in. What happened to going over the commands?
What glowwormxl is saying is that on these harnesses you are supposed to tie in exactly where he clipped the biner. It's a different style of harness... You could tie in to the waist loop as well for additional safety, but that's not the intention of the harness manufacturer.
If you have a harness with a loop at the crotch and a loop at the waist (what is no stupidly called a belay loop) you need to clip into BOTH loops. Relying on one of anything in climbing is a poor idea when you can have two. Given some harnesses don't have both loops, you are only safeguarding yourself by using both.
it says TIE in for a reason..

Tying in with a rope allows the knot and rope to "give" when/if a climber falls.
(Kateland, stop climbing with this guy!)

Never attach you with a carabiner... This video is so stupid... Only use 8 knot directly on the harness !

These no-frills gym harnesses only have one big loop. This is what "new people" are likely to use in gyms.
