this man was truly portal to another level of music, genius is an understatement, although I have all of his work I wish I had seen him play while he was still here, oh well - another time another place perhaps, if I am fortunate enough...
This is absolutely one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. I couldn't get over the shear elegance of the complete contribution. I never would have thought Stevie could play something like this. This should be in the R&R hall of fame as one of the most romantic tunes of all. This should make Stevie and DT a favorite to nearly every true lover of musical beauty.
One of the most soothing, peaceful, and tranquil instrumentals ever recorded. Amazing how somebody known for hard and powerful and rockin guitar work could turn around and pull off something as gentle and sublime as this.
there will never be no one else like stevie ray vaughn. JUST AWESOME. WISH HE WAS STILL HERE.oh nevermind i guess, HE IS. can't get enough. STEVIE RAY LIVES in all of us. thank god for all the people who have heard his GUITAR SCREAM.
It's been 21 years and we still love and think of you Stevie. It is a little after 1am, on the same day we lost you. Your music will always soothe our soul and fill our hearts with the joy that you instill in us with your music. RIP brother, you will never be forgotten.
Got to see Stevie in Burlington, Vermont, shortly before his death. He was top of his game again. What a loss! He just melted me into the floor with this one.
@TTmaniax In my opinion, SRV can touch hendrix, im a huge hendrix fan, anyone who can turn a 2 minute hendrix song into an 8 minute work of art is pure genius,
@TTmaniax Hendrix a great writer, in my opinion the best ever. Theres not too much technical difference between the best, just in terms of style, Stevie Ray Vaughans style is my preffered
@TTmaniax IMHO, Stevie was and is the greatest interpreter of Jimi's work. I think Jimi would be proud to have his music live on and be played by such a gifted musician. Stevie loved and respected Jimi so much, and it was obvious with every note of Jimi's that he played.
@2lynnski7 That's an interesting observation. I've always considered RP 9+ minutes of pure prayer. But yours is a unique way of looking at it as well. One of my fave SRV tunes, and one that I go to when I need to chill, be still, or just need an "emotional hug." Thank you Stevie!
If Stevie Ray were a painter, this would be his MASTERPIECE. I think of him painting this starting at the bottom of a 10 foot high canvas and moving on up as he goes thru the song and his LIFE. Muted, playing bottleneck, his picking is precise, immaculate, as he turns over the lead to Reese, he plays great backup. This defines SR, with lots of dark and scary moments. Sunny then stormy. It's all here !!
If i could play a single line like Stevie does on this track i'd be 50 times the musician i am now! Good god every single note drops off the neck like it came from his heart, nobody feels it like he does when he played this track, imo his most emotional piece ever! I re-live breaking up with my beautiful ex every single time i hear this piece, breaks my heart every single time!
Stevie "life without you" just will never be the same. Your bright presence is missed. See you at the feet of the King one day...I know you and your momma (who passed not long ago) are at complete peace in His presence.
This has got to be one of my all time favorite guitat pieces.. his execution of phrasing is spectacular to say the least. the bass lines allow the music to revereate through the senses and the piano lulls you into an emotional relaxation,,, this is one song that allows me the solitude of pure listening enjoyment Thank you guys for being where only a few of us have the chance to be, ,,,,,creating a music masterpiece
SRV style cannot be beaten by anyone! The music comes from his heart and travels thru his arn to his finger tips. His playing reaches my soul.I also enjoy the style of Santana`s song on Bella and Samba Pa Ti.I like the music to reach my soul no matter who sings it or playes it.Good music died in the 90s.I have loved Stevie and Carlos from the begining of there careers.I`m 72 and still love their music.
@josssy27 WE still have his soul he left with us in our care. SO love it enjoy it and Hold the one you love while he plays; you will feel his love pouring right through you both. Yep!! My angel being sent me one of SRV gems tonight, thousands of miles away and this man brings us together as ONE BIG WHOLE. THAT is the magic he carries in his Heart. <3 to all of his fans, he is looking down on us with smiles all over his face. <3<3<3
Hendrix's little brother, and my "celestial mentor". God how this man's music has taught me my chops on thulectric bass. To learn this song, for example, reminds me of my old hall monitor -- Mother Tucker.
PS! Yever wonder what Hendrix would sound like if he had survived? Put on a CD of Joe Satriani
@theHellzapoppin toooooooo damn pure!!!! this is my favorite 1 by him. its an original & i listen 2 it no matter what mood i am in & i turn that baby UP LOUD (like now). SRV is 1 of the greatest & every1 those who know me knows that hes my favorite (especially when it comes down 2 the blues). RIP SRV!!!! WE ALL MISS & STILL LUV YA!!!! YOUR MUSIC WILL ALWAYS LIVE ON ESPECIALLY IN MY BOOK!!!!
@stewrules I love Stevie Ray Vaughan! Superb feeling in everything he plays. Check out Roy Buchanan's music....he played with all his heart too. Check out Roy Buchanan's "Wayfaring Pilgrim" "Sweet Dreams" and " The Messiah Will Come Again"....very nice instrumental music. He has a lot of music but those songs are a good place to start.
@stewrules Pat Metheny comes to mind. But in the tradition of Stevie, who would not hesitate one second to cite his influcences, you might check out Kenny Burrell, who was one of Stevie's influences. Also, check out Grant Green, George Benson, Earl Klugh, Mark Whitfield, and Russell Malone (former guitarist for Diana Krall).
Oh this song......he put so much feeling into every second that he played. I agree with a lot of the comments below about how he played. I will NEVER get tired of listening to this song. PHENOMENAL!
I wonder why artists who are so obviously influenced by him never give him the props. Other blues players like B.B. who couldn't play a major 7 chord for all the tea in China are idolized?
@stratocaster1959 I'm not a Mayer fan, but In fairness, he's indicated publicly many times that Stevie was a huge influence on his music. In fact, in one interview he indicated that Stevie was his biggest influence.
this song....this song puts me in a low light bar, lounge with a small dance floor, a good buzz and my arms wrapped around a tight woman...slow...she knows....
Timless, simply timless. Personally, I actually like the rain-stick water-effects on the Greatest Hits Album; it adds atmosphere and nuance that you can't get in the other versions. Still, a great track any way you edit it. Smooth as silk.
I own and play a 1989 yr serial number model SRV artist series guitar, a re-issue super reverb amp and note for note knowledge of this instrumental, BUT, ain't SRV damnit, why me.... lol. Just saying, playing the notes ain't feelin' em ala SRV.. Deep blues here ya'll,thanks sratocaster1959!
More than John McGlaughlin, Buckethead, Clapton, Shankar, Hendrix, Al Di Meola, whoever else you can throw in there, Stevie Ray Vaughan, in my opinion, is the greatest guitarist in the history of the instrument, and that includes the friggin' lute. The man is legend. It must be his style I'm so drawn to, because there isn't much difference between skill level when you get to the cream of the crop--it's just that SRV's style really speaks to me. And I suppose all of you as well...
@bawhite125 So very well said. Not only did Stevie master his instrument, he brought intangibles to his playing - heart, soul, passion, love. And while I recognize greatness in the others (Clapton, Jimi, et al) I hear these intangibles in every single note Stevie plays. For me, that's what sets him apart from the others.
@bawhite125 Its the amount of soul he puts into his music. He puts his all into each note. He says more with one note then anyone can say in a life time. And I completly agree with you!
@bawhite125 You're right. I'm admired that people like Malmsteen are on the G3. Yes, he play fast, clean, but don't make MUSIC! Technique for me is nothing without music. I saw lots of people playing better than him, but knowing 10x less and playing 10x slower than him. Stevie was making music, and he had some hard hand.. so incredible
@bawhite125 I'm with you 110% percent. There are and have been sooooo many gifted guitarists in the world - you've named several in your post - but there is something about Stevie's style that I find mysterious and am drawn to over all others, still, 20 years after his passing. Thank you for saying he's the greatest cuz I've always felt that way, but didn't say it lest I be disrespectful to so many other greats. RIP sweet Stevie.
@bawhite125 good taste , from the heart, asit should be ,check out the great irish blues player, rory gallagher , died too young , clapton calls him one of the best ever.
@stick935 Good call on Rory. He had been recommended to me previously, but what I had heard upon first listen was quite folksy. I didn't realize he had so much range. Bad Penny is the JAM!
@bawhite125 man soul is regardless you obviously have a lack of education in guitars. he is sick very sicl and full of soul but physically he is lacking an entire thought process his music is 100% inside. there is zero abstract shit goin on.
i like the live version better but its all good hell its all S.R.V. i had a 59 strat sunburst let that one get away kills me to think about it o well .
I love this song!!! Thanks so much for posting it. I can only wonder what more beautiful music he would have created if he had not been taken so soon. It's a shame that we'll never know. RIP Stevie, your music will live on in our hearts.
One question, where is all the good music now days?
I listen to the jazz/smooth jazz/ and lots of older players like stevie, its a shame are big name artists are all about looks and shakin there bootys.
oh and I almost forgot this song was his way of showing the pain he felt when he wasnt sober thats why almost every time he played it on stage he would say (this one goes out to any one who is suffering in any way) Rip srv
cool I never got the chance to see him but I have alot of his CD's and DVD's and like you I only play on strats now :-) and I only play blues :-) stevie is the best!!!
beautiful.

Thanks SRV. Sometimes we want to jam out. Sometimes we want to mellow out. They don't come much "mellow" than this. Perfect.
