Sometimes I use a weight vest for basic exercises like push ups, dips, and pull ups, but in all seriousness just incorporating other ways to use your bodyweight is very effective, much as these exercises show. Now if it's a question of using free weights, I rarely uses those, but that's just me.
@MemetronDaBboy you are wrong. If you watch videos of elite and collegiate level gymnasts training there is usually weight training in it. The Georgia Gymdogs have a video specifically of their weight training as do Ohio State
@Pandamone ok cool. i am a bboy but also an amateir boxer and i do weight training it has not slowed down my body wieght power. I Only do squats, deadlift and military press though,
@MemetronDaBboy Not all programs are the same and not all gymnasts train the same; but I'd say most of the strength training that is done if not all is done with the body weight (sometimes with added weights attached to the body). If weights are used, it's usually done motion-specific for gymnastics (with the men), or light weights for rehab and injury prevention. Chainey Umphrey was huge but didn't lift weights other than his own body weight. Most gymnasts I knew and know don't lift.

they don't seem to be VERY strong. I think they are just stronger when it comes to lifting their own bodyweight... but their biceps can't lift a lot of weight more than their body weight unlike body builders who can.
@over1and0under What is your definition of functional strength? Being able to do a planche or front/back lever? Those skills are irrelevant to everyday activities (unless you are a gymnast) but for the average man it is not. The only functional exercises I see are muscle ups (pull ups and dips), dead lifts and overhead bench presses (which can be remedied by weighted handstand pushups)
Gymnastic skills/strength are for people's entertainment.
@jrk987 I used to do average exercises like pull ups, dips and push ups. I tried doing gymnastics exercises when I first found out that these kids actually managed to lift heavy weights on their first try with ease! I think these exercises build great strength that is relevant for everyday activities. Believe me, they train more muscles at once and they make everday physical activities easier because you utilise the most of the muscles in your body all at once.
I don't think 5'10" is too tall. I'm the same height and have been competing in gymnastics for 13 years (although I haven't been 5'10" the whole time lol)

hello.
i was just wondering. do gymnasts use weights in their training, or do they just use bodyweght?
because they seem to be VERY strong.
and would you be able to guide me to any sites that have info about the kind of training they do. cheers

they use their own bodyweight mostly
denniss198127 2 years ago
@denniss198127 Sure , ur own bodyweight is used so u can develop a very harmonious physique, thus enhanching ur movement abbilities.
Weightlifting puts a lot of stress on ur body (muscles and bones)

Olympic gymnasts NEVER use weights. correct me if i am wrong but they are specificly instructed not to do free weights other than body weight.
Purely for functional strength

@Pandamone,
I often see the women do weight training to supplement their training at the collegiate level, but back when I was in, the men seldom did.

not very strong? big biceps has nothing to do with real strength. most bodybuilders would not be able to perform that exercise.
gymnasts have true functional strength. in many planes of movement.
im not trying to say body builders arent strong, but usuealy they are not functionnaly strong.

Does heighth really make that much of an impact on your potential? I am only 5'10" and people tell me i am too tall to do stuff like this
muchufoo 2 years ago
It is what you make of it. A gymnast from Israel who is 6'1" just made floor exercise finals at the Beijing Olympics.
