not too bad a video - nice to see the diffrence between the takes, thanks for sharing :) however i'd like to add that your composition is way off on the portraits.. head of the model is good on the vertical axis, however its dead center on the horizontal axis which just looks bad in this case - just wanted to point that out - besides that, the "flash-part" of the video was good, enjoyed it! :)
@cinexstudios You're 100% correct. When you see other videos you'll see the difference in composition. These were some of the very first ones I had done and I was rushing as I didn't know what I would edit and what not so composition got ignored. But you'll notice in other videos that I'm picky about composition. Thanks for watching!
I can add: when you blocked the direct sun filling the models face with the reflector the difference exposure value with the background was caused because the last had much higher Ev. Of course a nice incident light meter would do the work faster. When you use flash to compensate or fill shadows is important to know that you must program the flash sync speed (or lower) in the camera as priority. God bless the film era when we had to think deeply before shot. Thanks for sharing
Very nice tutorial I shall immediately subscribe to your channel. Trying to think how to best balance the light sometimes makes my head exploded which can be messy ;) While I've had good experience in photography mostly film (developing and printing) I still find that my photographs come out lacklustre and unimpressive it quick tips like this that show me the error of my ways - good stuff and thank you.
I really like this video. You r an awesome teacher although you don't have the best assistant holding the difuser for you. (what a funny video).
... your cousin looks much better with that messy hair..lol
well, I think I like the photo with the difuser better and thanks to your wife that gave us the option to compare.
I truly got the point about sunny day and sorry for my first attempt to shoot photos on a sunny day.To me, it was still worth it cause I've learned a lot from it.
This is the first time I have come across a sensible british southasian posting a sensible edcutational video on youtube as rest of the british asians post video's trying to show off thinking they are some cool dude whereas they make themself and the whole south asian community look like lame and dumb...
I like the one with the diffuser it looks warmer....nice love your videos they are helping me tremondously with my overall knowdlege of photography..Im like a kindergarden student and you the amazing teacher :D thank you
@crisdj1974 Hehe. Thank you! Not sure if you know about my facebook page. I also offer one on one help there as well.... for free. :P New video coming out soon. Take care!
@schiz430 Why not manual mode? Because this video is not for myself. I am teaching photography to beginners. If you watch the newer videos you will realize that there is something on Manual Exposure as well. In fact, I just did a looooooooong video on metering. Now before I introduce how to balance the exposure by adding 4th element of flash I want to make sure the beginners get their feet wet at least. Teaching is art itself.
@schiz430 By the way in aperture you can still use exposure compensation to adjust the exposure but guess what? You would have no control over how the background looks. With flash, you can control the exposure of the background because you're using 2 different exposures. I thought I let you know.
@PhotographersOnUTube thanks... thank you for the effort teaching us beginners some techniques... hope you continue on making vids for the next new kids on the block!
@ironian24 You are 100% wrong. Diffuser is used to eliminate the shadows and soften light, it has nothing to do with metering. #2 You don't recompose unless you're using an ancient camera. The reason why we have multiple focal points so we can move them instead of recomposing. You do not get sharp quality by recomposing.
With the fill flash photos it seems to me that there are alot of blown out highlights in the background and they are really distracting. I suggest turning up your shutter to lover the exposure of the ambient light. You explained this very well though, good job.
@AmrcnHstryX With the flash diffuser on/off there is nothing that's blown out. I'm looking at the right now in lightroom. Also, when the picture is flat due to not enough light you don't want to increase the shutter speed. That will cause under exposure.
Hi I am going to photograph a friends wedding this weekend but I am just starting out I have the nikon d7000 and I have just bought the Sb700 speedlight which lense would you suggest to use on the day? I have 3 lenses 55-300mm ft4.5-5.6g and nikon 55mm ft1.8mm and 18-105mm 3,5-5.6g only taking at ceremony and down by the beach after. thanks your video's are great, they helping so much thanks
@amashley19 Ashley, it depends on the location. If there is plenty of light, any of these lens would be okay. I'd probably stick with 18-105 and 50mm 1.8, just keep in mind that 18-105 will give you trouble in low light. In that case put on the 50 1.8 so you can open up the aperture for more light. Do all your portrait shots with 50mm for better bokeh and sharpness. Check out my site and look for Useful Info tab. You'll find some tips on wedding photography. I'll add more tips to it soon.
@PhotographersOnUTube thankyou so much I was wondering do you think it's worth while me purchasing 80mm 1.8mm? or would suggest another lense? I am looking to take portait photos all the time.
@amashley19 If you'll be doing this on a side to make some extra money then yes, it's worth every penny. Remember 85mm will be used for your close up portraits. You won't be able to do group shots with that. Maybe 3 people from a distance. As far as the quality of the lens go, it is top notch.
@PhotographersOnUTube yes I eventually want to make it a business, for group shots what lense would you suggest? shots will be taken in low light conditions but want to use this for both thanks heaps for feedback I really appreciate it
@amashley19 24-70 2.8 is the most versatile lens. It has great wide angle and decent mid range room. Excellent optics. It cost 4 times more than the 85mm. If you know you'll be doing this as a business, then always invest in quality lens as they last a long time. Join us on facebook as youtube gives me limited characters to type. The only third party lens you can get that matches Nikon quality is the super wide angle Tokina 16-28 2.8 You'll save $1200.
@PhotographersOnUTube thankyou so much I was wondering do you think it's worth while me purchasing 85mm 1.8mm? or would suggest another lense? I am looking to take portait photos all the time.
Great videos, I am learning photograph at the moment. So all your tutorials are quite useful to me. Oh, by the way, thank you for your wonderful comment about Serene's performance. ;-)
@ZlleH A lot of photographers don't use the diffuser when they're using fill flash. They just use direct flash but I personally like to diffuse the light. Fill flash is not your primary source of light anyway. You're using ambient light or continuous light as your primary source but fill just makes it pop more. In few weeks I'll show you guys how to do strobe work instead of using fill flash. I'll use soft box/umbrella to diffuse the light. And yes, upright bouncing won't bounce outdoors.
Yes I only left my camera on ISO400 and didn't change it. I will do that for sure. I did try many different F stops though and that made a lot of difference. Thanks again for your help.
I played around tonight with bouncing the flash inside of my house and tried bouncing it at different angles with the same settings on the camera each time to see the difference and it worked out great. I used to shoot a lot with the Minolta SRT101 but because of the cost of film you really didn't have the money to play around like you do now days with the digital end. Thanks again for all your help with your videos.
@Jack19592008 That's great! I'd also suggest to play with flash at different ISO to test your true ISO capabilities. Sometimes we use high ISO assuming flash may not produce enough light. Knowing your camera's limitation really helps when you're doing manual work. 7 out of 10 times I use 60 degree angle.
@Jepraw Yeah, I'll do a video on it but SB900 interface is different than SB700. You want to set your mode to TTL if it's the first time you're using a speed light. The flash power maybe displayed in 0.0 EV (TTL mode) or fraction like 1/4 (Manual mode) You rotate the dial to adjust the power. For regular 8 foot ceiling 0.0 EV or 1/4 power is okay depending on the aperture/shutter. Play with it. The CLS system is easy to use by switching to "Remote" and use the pop up flash as master.
@Jack19592008 Thank you, Jack! I've noticed that no one shares the setting for the flash. Soon I'll do one video on using a bonce flash indoors and I'll use 45, 60, 75, 90 degree angle to show how it changes the lighting effect.

you don't need a defuser, just use your metering in camera on the bright areas of the frame then recompose on to the subject. too easy.
