I wouldn't have even thought that Smash would have given Hand the same control scheme, since he was only meant to be a computer-controlled character. The original Mortal Kombat in the arcades didn't give Goro or Shang Tsung regular control schemes, so when trying to play as them with MAME cheats the game freezes. I always though Smash was the same way.

oh my bad i got corrected at school yesturday u can unlock him without cheats on regular super smash bros. for n64 not on melee or brawl

*sigh*, you cannot ever unlock Master hand. The developers never made a "Win animation" for him. This can be seen when you use him (via cheats) and finish a match. The game freezes because it has no idea what the hell to do with the master hand sprite.

Also, the game freezes whenever you use certain moves (like the "finger walk" when you are not above ground).

Master Hand is not a legitimate playable character in any smash bros. as of now.

when i use the player modeling, when it finishes in verses mode, the program freezes, i can still see the FPs and everything just it doesnt show the winners screen and doesnt show anything i tried it again with regular characters and it worked ok....so im using 1.6 like u
