Wellington has to be one of the worst to land into in New Zealand and I've flown into a bunch of them both as a passenger on a commercial flight and as pilot in command. Coming in from Cook Strait over Moa Point Road there is an enormous sink and you loose serious lift. If you're too low, you can almost end up in the chain link fence surrounding the airport.
Palmerston North is another crazy one I've flown in and out of. Nutty crosswinds that have you coming in to land sideays! Fun!
to all those who actually give a shit about the copy right. who give a fuck? i was like 12 when i made this video and i just wanted to do something cool. so go fuck your selves if you dont like me posting this video.
Thats some serious wind change at the threshold! Jeez!! See the '146 on its nosegear!! Respect to you guys down there, ive dealt with some nasty x-winds but that really is something else!
well thats just made flying into my old home town way more scary than it ever was. I had a horrible take off in San Francisco last year, the plane was only in the air for 2 mins and it had a rapid descent, everyone looked at each other as if it would be the end. Was horrible. Have had a few hairy landings and take off in Welly too,
@davepoole I had one of those feelings just after take off - there was a horrible chugging noise all the way down the runway during takeoff - i thought some fuel problem - then after climbing we started descending for no apparent reason - i was terrified - my hands were sweating to the very fingertips!
@BiggerThinking1 Ive had one like that too. just descending into LA and we were going pretty smooth with little turbulence and out of no where we just drop like 1000 feet (exaggeration). hahaha i yelled FUCk in the middle of the drop and people were all shuckin up. haha
YES - very dense fogh... but sometimes the FOG occurs too quickly to simply SHUT the airfield ... and at others stays too long also - so if there APPEARS a break - it's grabbed... even if it closes... they DO take a fair risk - (to keep planes flying in & out of Wellington)
Been there - landed 7 left...BUT? As i'm not an AIRWORTHY person - preferring to KEEP my feet firmly on the ground - I must say - I WOULD PREFER to completely bypass Wellington airport & NEVE ever -have the misfortune to be "in" an airoplane - that requires a stop-over through wellington thanks ... & U thought the Wahini was bad?
@j4cko56 Depends on the setup of the airport, Take the old Hong Kong airport or Princess Juliana, There was really only 1 approach, regardless of wind. I don't know much about wellington, but i assume they land that way for a reason, regardless of the winds.
@Razgriz100000 Rongotai ( NZWN ) runs 16 - 34 . It is worse in a strong NW wind due to the hills at the north end of the harbour generating turbulence. At least the southerly is more constant. One a nice day, its great. In a strong blustery NW wind, its a bastard .
@TheWaver22, @kiereniskwl, 00:41 is Ansett New Zealand, which was bought out by Qantas some years ago

the strong winds at wellington actually help disperse the wake turbulence, allowing aircraft to takeoff and land closer to eachother

Always a buzz coming home to 'Welly and the plane is getting tossed about on approach.
Firm grip on the arm rests, especially the last time i flew in from Chch.

But hey - both MY trips - were in daylight... Them pilots do this AT NIGHT & in dense fog also (only accidents & too much snow stop them)?
QUIX4U 2 years ago
No, the airport closes with fog just like any other..

@blockhead2210 cant be a tail wind? you always land into the wind, otherwise it makes it more dangerous that it already is here!
