What a great tune .Lucky to be there to see this .If you can ever get a vid or sound recording of the finale "Like a hurricane" you will not be dissapointed its the best version i,ve heard in 35 years since it was first played by Neil Young and Crazy Horse
@julyarchives I was there, but like an idiot I was unaware that Neil Young was on the main stage, while I was watching Reef and Kulashaker. Damn shame that is. Glad you enjoyed it.
Rotten is much more important person then Lydon. Because the story of Jhonny is a sad "into the black" story. Dig this. You will see why Young told that.
funny thing i like about this tune is if it gets off kilter a little it rights itself like columbus and his trio of ships and i agree the heavier version of this song just kicks doing it clean aint nearly as fun look at these guys they turn back to teenagers for five minutes or so, ok the whole gig
@dangerbirdzuma I don't think it's about Elvis as much as Rock n Roll in general. At about 3:07 he starts on a guitar solo that fucks me up every time, damn I love how he plays.
i was 18. i was there! that was a festival- bowie, neil young & the sex pistols in the blistering heat! we had to walk for miles in 30 degrees to get to the site because there was such bad traffic ouf stratford. about an hour after we finally got the tent up, neil young came on stage....
@tomsnowball Hi... i was there too.... amazing gig - and man that traffic was insane... it took me and my mates about 3 hours to get to within 8 miles of the site - then pretty much stuck for another 9 hours in traffic... i think we got to the site about 1am .... so missed Bowie... but what a weekend .......
After Kurt died.... Neil said he'd never play this song in Seattle again.... and he hasn't.... (Kurt Cobain quoted this song in his suicide note).... and Neil loved Kurt.
What are you wearing for the show tonight?Think I will wear this Tide shirt the wife got free for sending in coupons...Now thats ROCK-N-ROLL ATTITUDE !!!No posers allowed !
@TrempBoy2 Same here and many Neil Young songs I feel just the opposite about but the way he hits it in this one is incomparable to anything before or since. Especially (for me) starting at about 3:05 around there. I can listen over and over.Of course they're many more technical guitarist, shredders, etc, But this is my favorite!
@TrempBoy2 Really? I feel like the the acoustic version holds so much more water. It's much more somber and conveys more feeling. Not that this version isnt good though.
What a great tune .Saw Neil Young and Crazy Horse at this cocert with Claire and Georgia 96.If you caqn get a copy of Like a hurricane from this concert you will not be dissapointed.18 minutes of great music ,sounds and emotion you wil ever hear
yes correct about the guitar playing...not many will appreciate...highly original...nevertheless acoustic I always prefer fm him..this voice...magic..
O.K., I have wondered forever, he says This is the story of Johnny Rotten.WHOs JOHNNY ROTTEN. I mean, I know its John Lydon from the Sex Pistols but wasn't this song written way before the PISTOLS were ever thought of. So is JONNY ROTTEN Like a ficticouse Johnny B. Good type character! Regardless Neil Young is a Guitar God!He was one of the 1st (aside from Hendrix) that used feed back as an asset, almost an instrument altogether..All the NOISE ROCK bands should kiss his ass.
@naturalbornhustler13 Why did you tell him that, if he knew the year they broke up, he knew johnny Rotton's real name. I thought this song was written in early 70's. But i'M WRONG thanks for the info Atomigots.
@Atomigots Thank You, I thought it was written much earlier like right after he quit with Crosby stills Nash and Young. I think his Guitar playing is enough to keep him relevant!
@scumgod13 Yes, it's reference to Johnny Rotten from the Sex Pistols; to the punk movement from the end of the 70's (Ramones, Clash, etc.). The "king is gone but not forgotten" refers to Elvis. Punk was a revolution just as Rock and Roll in the 50's, with Elvis its King. The song also refers to suicide ("out of the blue, and into the black"); it could mean good things/good bands don't last (just think of Kurt Cobain quoting this song in his last note).
@scumgod13 The song is about the alternatives of continuing to produce similar music ("to rust" or — in "My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)" — "to fade away") or to burn out, as John Lydon of the Sex Pistols might be considered to have done by abandoning his Johnny Rotten persona. The Sex pistols had already been and gone before this song was recorded....
@scumgod13 Eh, the idea behind the song from what I can gather is simply that Neil Young sold out with this song... he rubbed himself against punk to stay popular and ride their coat tails. Thus the entire meaning of the song, "It's better to burn out than it is to rust" Young does crap like this performance to stay new and thus productive. Take it how you want I guess but for the most part it was Young singing to himself.
@BloodyHarrow Oh, also to note I think Dave Foley does a skit on an old Kids in the Hall episode where he talks about "bad Vibes" he gets from rock, least I see a lot of Neil Young in it... in the end he just gives in and goes with rock... much like Neil.
Neil Young also says "Good luck Johnny" twice later on. As this was 1996, the Sex Pistols had reunited with their original line-up (Glen Matlock was The Sex Pistols original bass guitarist before Sid Vicious, and co-writer of most of their songs), and were embarked on a 20th anniversary world tour. So that was what Neil Young was referring to before this tour.
Punk galvanised Neil Young into producing some of the best music of his career; like this song for example.
@roddy76to86 Yea, I'm sure Punk hit him like a fuckin' freight train as he was already experimenting with some Noise Rock stuff. I love it, my favorite guitar player ever.
The story I heard (so I'm not absolutely certain that it's true) was that Neil Young went into a bit of a depression after punk, thinking his career was finished. But then he perked up and came out with the best music of his career.
That was the way to react to punk, not go into a 35 year long huff like Greg Lake. Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull had the right idea as well, coming out with their album "Too Old To Rock, Too Young To Die" !
this song has many meanings - it is in two way a massage from the punk rock community. Johnny Rotten was important for the punk movement - it also is about the vietnam war.
The last reason for this having something to do with punk rock is that this song was the last song kurt cobain put on repeat when he killed himself. I think that is why this song never got played on and acoustic by Neil ever again. There is more anger in this song cos of kurt cobain´s death.
@MasterOfPizza99t Hmmmm, metal, I disagree because Neil Young still plays the basic 4/4 6/8 time and the same chords that all the Blues men played. I would say he started NOISE ROCK,which is every bit as significant as Thrash/speed metal. Metal though, is one of the few if not the only Genres that dont rip off the Blues.Im talking speed metal, Anthrax,Megadeath, etc. It is Classical influenced.I respect it as its the only ROCK music not stolen from Africans.
