Wolv I've been leveling pigs and they wouldn't get owned by the robots. Also if A Very Young Pig may pass on leveling them in packs at low levels helps so you can kill higher creatures

Use blocks that are unusual, cheap and/or pretty useless, so: redstone(?), cobblestone, infinite pools, rare plants etc.

About the lag: If it is related to the trees, perhaps destroying the blocks that the trees sit on will help?
