True alot of TMA don't practice realistically, however it should be noted he is talking about his training in TKD under the rules with no head punches ! If my students spar with their guard down they'll get punched in the head ! (love MMA too, myself and several of my students complete (and win !) in pro mma fights)
Not all strikes are designed to knockout, strikes such as eye gouges and groin strikes are designed to disable which is which intern can give you time to knockout or better still.......get away to safety.
It gets old telling these MMA worshippers about martial arts. I remember when MMA first started, they said kicks were useless in MMA; along comes Pete Williams with a roundhouse kick KO, and the Rogan's had to revamp their nonsense. It doesn't stop; striker (karate, kung fu) can't beat grappler; a front kick won't work; yeah, yeah, yeah..all of it worked when people actually use their art. Keep talking about what doesn't work so when an expert uses it, he can break your jaw and shut you up.
@hakeem0436 thats what Ive been trying to explain to people, me and my friends watch these big UFC and K1 fights, even muay Thai and really analize the fights from an artist perspective and not a fan. there is a difference when a spectater is watching and booing the bjj guy for so called boring ground work and a so called exciting fight when two guys are throwing blows w/o proper form, and one happens to get knocked out as a result, lol then Bruce Buffer crows for THE NEW champion of the world
@chamorruwarrior seriously? If were allowing weapons then you can have nunchuks and a bow and arrow. If I can bring my sig sauer .45. Why even learn hand to hand combat if your just bringing a stick anyways?
I think it's a bad idea to not be perfectly clear about the whole MMA vs TMA argument, because it deserves a fairly complex answer. The typical question is whether MMA is better than TMA or just the opposite I think a lot of people accept the question to be absolute, IE MMA is always better, period. No question that MMA technique is better than TMA in a cage fight with rules and refs, but foolish to think MMA is absolutely better than anything else in no holds barred hand to hand
isn't MMA created by 'borrowing' different techniques from TMAs? so if TMAs weren't there in the first place, there won't be MMA too. i think it's 'dumb' to say that TMAs are useless cos of MMA. Also, TMAs does do a lot to improve a person and not just fighting, whereas MMA is just abt fighting (it is, after all, a sport). also, the martial art u pick also depends on ur psychic. there should be different styles to choose from based on one's physical strength and personality.
ALERT ALERT ALL US PRESIDENTS ARE RELATED TO KING JOHN THEY ARE ALL HIS GRANDKIDS. ALL PRESIDENTS ARE ROYALS OF ENGLISH BLOOD.. BETSY ROSS WAS A DUTCHESS OF YORK. GEORGE WASHINGTON A DUKE OF EARL. MILDRED REED IS GEORGE WASHINGTONS GRT GRNDMOTHER. SHE IS OBAMAS 10TH GRT GRNDMOTHER SEE MY CHANNEL I HAVE A LINK TO MY BLOG. THESE ROYAL PRESIDENTS ARE FIXING TO CRASH USA NO MORE FREEDOM TO BRING IN NWO=ENGLISH WORLD ROYAL DOMINATION. THEY WANT US TO BE LIKE CANADA AND AUSTRAILIA DE GONA KILL U SOON
For Joe Rogan to say that he obviously hasnt sparred with a Korean TkD practitioner or a Chinese Kung fu fighter in there own country who wasnt trained in this US watered down stuff...Joe if you went to Henry's TKD and got your black belt in 1 yr then I think u should be getting ur ass kicked too...MMA borrowed from all styles and as you can see with Machida and Silva they are owning these so called MMA champs...think about it!
@JasonDanjafield You have a list of excuses for why you wasted your time on a dumb martial art. Karate is not effective in mma just a few tools from karate that have been modified for mma which is no longer the same style you learned from karate.
Let's see see MMA vs REAL Karate.Put your head gear on, I'm gonna go find my nunchucks and my farming hoe.Wait what?I can't use farming hoes in MMA?Why not? My friends can't help me in MMA either? What the heck... At least let me use my bow and arrow while I'm on horseback... Horseback related combat is not alowed in MMA? But it's TMA... Ok at least I have side kicks to knee joints, throat rips, eye gouges and groin strikes. Wait what I can't? Oh come on... How is this even called "fighting"...
@lilsm555 btw I never said I practice Karate so dont speak out of pocket..the point i was making is that Joe was speeking ignorantly..I personally trained from the age of 12 in Karate but I have experience in many styles including tkd and "MMA" and I can say this...no style is a waste of time...they teach the artist to be humble yet leatal..instead of a reckless brute that constantly talks about kicking ass all the time. research please..everytime i get on the tube i read foolishness step it up!
@StealthDonkey007 .I respect your views but MMA is a sport and just that...MMA wont teach you presure points and how to use weapons..wont teach you how to take on multiple attackers intellegently because its a system built around rules of the ring...traditional styles were developed to fight wars and survive, through the years they been watered down..some styles of kung fu even banned in China...now we in America get a glance of something close to Vale Tudo and we think its the best thing ever..
@MacFlanahan Thanks for responding respectfully but there are multiple pp all over the body that cannot be attacked via punch alone. for example the tiger claw has a griping/ punch that has devastating effects also the snake strike to the wind pipe is not allowed in legal fighting nor groin nor eye attacks. you see when people start comparing a sport to an ancient art that has defended villages, family honor and kingdoms, thats when people start to sound foolish to me
@JasonDanjafield You're making two inferences which may be false
1) these strikes are significantly more damaging and easier to land than normal punching. It is true the eye pokes, throat attacks, and groin strikes hurt. They hurt alot. However, I've never been knocked out by one. I have been knocked out by a punch. Fight OVER in a way that the other attacks never did.
2) MMA fighters don't already know these techniques.
They get hit all the time by accident in training. They are fully aware.
I agree, there are some things that MMA doesn't teach, like weapon use and defense. In my experience most "pressure points" are either ineffective or impractical, but I'd be happy to be shown exceptions to this. I think training MMA is an excellent base for self defense though. You get an idea what works and what doesn't, and some idea what it is like to be in an actual fight (more so than most TMAs). Combined with something like Krav Maga would be ideal.
Joe Rogan obviously dosen't know the difference between fighting in a cage and fighting in the street or a life or death struggle, trapping does work in a real fight I know because I have done it to MMA fighters who challenge me to a fight because they think trapping arts don't work and as for Tiger Kung Fu it also works and is one of the most effective forms of kung fu with strikes to the throat and eyes - Kali 8 years Krav Maga 4 years Silat 6 years
How the fuck can you say that Shotokan can't be used in mma? mawashi geri looks alot like a thai kick to me. gyako zuki looks alot like boxing's straight right. You only need to make a few adjustments to the shotokan style... tuck your chin hands up etc. give me a break. But I agree with the other statements.
@olamprov you take an art like karate and modify it to work in MMA, it isn't karate. They did this once with monkey kung fu. Took out all the uselessness and in the end looked like crappy Kickboxing. Why go through all that when you can just take up muay thai?
@Urbanvillenin true, I understand what you mean, but some people like me grew up doing karate. I did BJJ and Karate since I was little, and I know that it's easier to just to muay thai, but I already have the back ground in karate see? That's why it would take less time to modify it for guys like me who already invested a lot of time in Shotokan. And you have to admit, Andrei Arlovski (he does sambo too) and Lyoto Machida use Shotokan pretty effectively in the cage.
What you're not looking at is the history of these art forms. Monkey kung fu often times uses wild movements, groin strikes, finger biting and eye gouges (Like a monkey) and uses a thing called a STICK, to beat the crap out of people with. Last time I checked the UFC did not alow any of these things because it's too dangerous and people might get hurt. When you apply rules to a system created to copy the way a freakin' CHIMPANZEE fights, of course it sucks, you took out 98% of the art...
forreal theres no best style and theres no weak style, everybody uses there style in fighting different than another person of an example a amature fighter can beat a golden gloves boxer, mauy thai kick boxing can beat brazilian ju jitsu or taekwondo can beat sambo,or boxer can beat a kick boxer ect theres no best style and theres no weak ones it all depends on how the person uses that style in fighting no matter if its in the cage or in the streets everybody fight different
@1980mvagustaf4 alright you're just a guy who thinks the only "real" fighters are on T. V so I dont care what you have to say. man you probably think Bruce Lee sucks because of his use of the unpractical "Kung Fu" as all the weasterners. refer to it.
@RMphilmacrac the big problem is that TMA like kung fu leave a lot of holes thats why bruce lee trained western boxing, escrima and bjj so sry dude check ur facts
@beelz001 it leaves a lot of plot holes in the cage or ring but when you apply it to a fight its pretty useful. if you look up White Lotus, its probably the most deadliest Martial Art ever and its "Kung Fu" and i know Bruce Lee did tons more than just Wing Chun but everything he did he centered around Wing Chun. even the way you punch and parry in JKD is centered around Wing Chun. if you wanna argue about Bruce Lee then you picked the wrong person believe me.
*nigga you can poke somebody in the eye in a real fight....or break their fingers*
you just learned kung fu :/
theirs your tiger claw.......its just a dirty ass strike to the eyes. it works great too. eye pokes happen on accident and guys cant see...what do you think would happen if you tried to rake that shit.
@MagicCryo why are you telling me this? tell beelz001, Im saying Kung Fu is usefull in practical situations. maybe not in the cage but on the street's id rather know Kung Fu then "MMA" since everyone in the world thinks that MMA is a style now
@RMphilmacrac MMA isn't a style but it's usually grouped with people using one or two stand up and ground styles that work practically while kung fu doesn't.
ip man is a loser, the only real fights he had were against some weak chinese guys , show me any of his fights against someone really strong and i will shut up(dont trust the movies, the are cool, but really, really far away from the real history).Wing chun is probably the weakest martial arts you could learn
Rogan is stoned out of his mind for the interview lol But he's right. Kung fu is still the height of bullshit in martial arts. Too many movies have too many idiots thinking it works.
@demblackfeet I know but jeet kune do also is al self defense style and has a few things that aren't allowed in the UFC like hitting the groin or hitting in the eyes so is saying that that aspect is also ineffective
@demblackfeet yep. if bruce ran into a BJJ fighter back then, he would've also tried to work it in the same way he learned wrestling and borrowed from boxing and fencing. use what works, discard what doesn't. it's a process. it ain't even a style.
@RMphilmacrac how is yip man a monster? have u ever seen any of his fights? we both know the answer is no! think hard and feel the sting of truth. kung fu has been exposed
Being an MMA fan im surprised Rogan would have these thoughts, the great thing about MMA is that every Martial Art has a place in MMA, its true fundamentally you need BJJ,Wrestling and some form of Stand up, but to out right blast other Martial Arts is ignorant imo, Before Machida Karate would be considered one of the "uselss" arts but as we all have seen it can be very effective.
I love MMA, which means mixed martial arts, some techiques work better than others, its pretty much like who's gumbo came out better, just a mixtue of ingrediants, and in that gaurd I love the ability that kung fu and karate bring to the game, but no one style can no longer "be all, end all" of martial arts since the original ufc. There are some who just love to fight, which is great, but then there are those who love the sport aspect of MMA, the actual precision and art to it. either way, enjoy
Been training with team popovitch in south florida in BJJ - Muay thai , Hapkido for 30 years , Escrima for 6 years , getting ready to start American Kenpo , no such thing as a bad art. Ever see a fight break out at a boxing match or an mma event ? notice how all those skills get thrown out the window and everybody is swinging for the fences.
to anybody who knows something about fighting: i'm a smaller guy (5'8", 130 lbs.), i've never been in a fight before and i study eastern philosophy so i'm more on non-violence side of things, but sometimes i can't help but be afraid of being attacked. i certainly don't go looking for trouble and i think that's what's kept me out of it so far. but, in case i ever do, does anyone have any advise about how someone like me with zero skills can defend myself?
@youthank8 every human has weaknesses, dont go mma on anyone, use self defence i.e.1 do what u must to avoid harm to yourself. 2 kick knees, ankle if u have to (if u cant walk u cant attack) break fingers, use wristlocks if u can blah blah. 3 if u dont know how to punch dont try if u know the person is more experienced, it opens u up to counters and u could break ur hand, making defense difficult -impossible.
@youthank8 learn how to fight, join a boxing, muay thai or mma class. run away if your facing more than one person or if they have a knife, dnt b a hero.
Well your obviosly an adult that think UFC is REAL FIGHTING. I dont no who Good Money is lmao? ok Just make sure bring the ambulance with you cuz im guna take your eyeball out of your socket once you try to be gay and hug me. il let you keep the other eye im not that fucked up. LMAO
@ghrawl2049 Lol... not sure if serious. You come off as a kid who plays too much Street Fighter so I'm not even gonna entertain your nonesense. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, before 8pm. Good money says you don't know any of the shit you claim you do, and good money says you wouldn't show whether you did or not hahaha
@thevidspot watch?v=GahwhgL2Srg_______________thats what im gona do wen you try to shoot in and hug me. Instead im guna leave my finger there so i could take out one of your eyes LMAO. remember to bring the ambulance and good money if he wana come too lmao
@ghrawl2049 This ignorant shit is hilarious haha. You know what's funny? GSP still won that fight. This will be the last response to you here since shit's gotten silly with you, but before I go here's a more realistic interpretation of BJJ vs. Kung Fu: /watch?v=JvF03K1-Ia4 ..... and don't forget to watch the other rounds, lmao.
@thevidspot You know whats FUNNY its a sport not a real death fight. EYE GOUGING my friend was always banned in UFC something kung fu teaches heavily. THANK YOU go back to watching UFC and wrestling your boyfriends in the gym LMAO
@thevidspot Hey listen You BrainWashed Homosexual. Im Mexican 6 ft tall.210 pounds. Im Bald with a Cross Tattoo Under My Eye. and alotta tattoos on body. Im gona be WEARING ALL RED THAT DAY. Im guna be looking for your gay ass in CESARs GRACIE GYM on sonoma blvd. so dont hide. "MONDAY 7PM". Lets see whos a real WARRIOR and fight with NO RULES and NO WEAPONS
Iv studied judo when i was a kid. and i train boxing and kung fu. and to say kung fu is worthless in the streets is ignorant. DAM I CANT WAIT TOO SEE YOU. PUSH your EYES INSIDE your BRAIN so you'd be BLIND FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE LOL
Also during this period, Captains Wallace M. Greene and Samuel B. Griffith learned martial arts techniques from Chinese American Marines. Go read it from wikipeda. marine corps martial arts program. and you tell me where they got it from??? DUMASS lmao
Your obviously a HOMOSEXUAL cus you watch WWF and love BJJ. They like hug and hold and hold each other with underwears on. Read Marine Corps Martial Arts Program in wikipedia. all of it came from Traditional Martial Arts. Not MMA, MMa is a sport. A gay sport with men wearing panties on lol
I would have their eyeballs in my hands when i eye gouge them when they come in close with their Homosexual hugging shit. Kung Fu is the best in quick vital point area techniques. BJJ followers only amazes the IGNORANT lol
watch?v=7qHL2PSpecI_____________________watch that Joe Rogan dont disrespect. yea rather bite scratch pull hair. its better BJJ. They practice lying down with man with Nuts in their face and hold and hug each other like a Homosexual lmao
@ghrawl2049 ROFL! Boards and bricks don't hit back, soldier. I don't know if you're trying to convince people that you train, but you obviously don't. Take that biting and scratching shit to any BJJ gym and you'd get your head twisted off. These days you can get a Kung Fu black belt in 3 years by just breaking boards. It's embarrassing. This is what TMA has come to: watch?v=_Z0_n7tGnK0
@thevidspot Dont compare a Shoalink Monk from China that trains their to endure punsishment to a fuckn White Guy Martial art Master from America. I dont wanna go to a BJJ gym. Im not a HOMOSEXUAL. i dont practice laying on the ground with another man with his nuts in my face hugging and holding each other LMAO. Leave that homosexual shit in Brazil with all their Trannysexual culture. BJJ is a Homosexual sport that has MANY RULES
@thevidspot thats western karate aka bullshit. Dont compare with the Shoalin Kung Fu from China. Theyv been trained killers since birth. Little 15 year old kids would take your eyeballs out of your socket
@ghrawl2049 Lol damn, posted 4 times in a row? You mad? Haha. You watch too many Jet Li movies. Truth is BJJ has been shown to be effective in real world combat. That's why marines and soldiers train in it. Fight any random person on the street and I'll guarantee you half the time it'll go to the ground, and if you don't know what to do then it's lights out. There's no jumping and backflips in real fights, ya dumbass. Do your research on the Shaolin... the video you noted displayed showmen.
@ghrawl2049 WIKIPEDIA?? Hahaha, this just gets better and better. MCMAP applies much of the ground moves done in MMA, like armbars and kimuras. Hell, the US Army went straight to the Gracie fam to get the goods on BJJ. Do some more research, boy. Google is your friend. Speaking of Gracie, what happened to all those kung fu guys in the UFC BEFORE the rules came to form? They got tapped out my Royce, lol. Kung fu couldn't get passed the likes of a Floyd Mayweather, let alone a GSP.
@thevidspot Dam this man is what you call Homosexual Loser that watches too much television. Even the first UFC had many rules idiot mainly including no eye gouging and biting. The Gracies made the UFC you Loser thats why Royce look so good. damn your an idiot lol
@ghrawl2049 Wait, so you're telling me that the only way a kung fu guy can beat a BJJ guy is by biting and scratching and shit? Lmao, wow. UFC 1 still had a limited ruleset. If you're telling me that dishonorable manuevers are the key to kung fu, then how is it different from a skillset of a 14 year old white girl on her period? And what about the real world military combat stuff? Nothing to say about that? And Masahiko was a Judoka, which involves - wait for it - groundfighting! Hahahaha
@thevidspot Kung Fu relies on lightning quick attacks to weak VITAL AREAS. that is not dishonorable that is what you call SELF DEFENSE. MMA is what you call a sport with rules. Dam i cant wait too see you in the GYM smack da GAY outta you lmfao.
This FAG Rogan disrespects Kung Fu. I would like him to tell that the Shoalin Monks that trained their whole bodies since they were kids. If i evern seen this midget Rogan in the street il Smack the shit out him for being disrespectful
@ghrawl2049 Rules like eye gouging and groin shots, so what's your point? You can say boxing is a sport, but boxers can lay punches that can be as life-threatening as a stab wound. So if you take a guy who can bite, scratch and pull hair like a little bitch, you think he can stand up to someone who's trained in a combat sport? Speaking of which, you know jiujitsu and boxing are components that are taught to US military and many law enforcement agencies for use in real world application, right?
I don't see it like that, for instance Joe says he was a victim of it when he did Taekwondo and says it doesn't work in real fights, this is true when you only use that ( or you must have 100% hit accuracy or something to make it work or be lucky lol ) BUT he did learn something from Taekwondo, to kick. So you can't say it's useless, if you mix it up which is mma it is useful.
an effective trap is basically a a double parry too a strike in one fluent motion, not too off the wall like mr.joe is making it out to be. and also there are reversal type traps. they are an entry to your punches,neck-throat shots, headbutts, and elbows. you put all those together the guy aint getting up. tell the navy seals trapping is bullshit
kung fu itself shouldnt be used in the octagon by itself. But there are aspects of wing chun like trapping the hands as an entry to get inside for a cross to an elbow then it would be usefull. I thought Joe Rogan was smarter than this. Bruce lee's jeet kune do uses elements of wing chun muaythai boxing fencing, and filipino martial arts that are totally complete and devastating arts. These filipino arts use trapping as well. as do seal teams. taught trapping mainly end a fight quick. trap=entry
The beauty is if I take a gun mma is worthless, if kong-fu fighter take sword or whatever they use mma fighter is worthless. My point is that everything depends on situation you are fighting if you are put in octagon cage of course mma will be most effective because it was made for octagon...but in real life sometimes you have to run, to jump. You can't say that martial art old 4000 years that includes whole philosophy is shit.
To each their own..but where does everybody think BJJ came from? where did Jiu jitsu come from? where did Aiki jiu jitsu come from? all traditional martial arts right? If training makes you happy then train in whatever system makes you happy. Nobody needs Joe to tell them whats good and whats bad.
@MrLorysim Exactly. I like how you think about it. Joe has his view points so do I and so do you! To me, every style is effective. It just depends on the individual and how he expresses himself in the martial arts.
to many people dont understand a very simple fact, when your fight someone no matter what style the practice you are NOT fighting the style you are fighting the person. If a fighter understands there art and know how to break it down and understand it then conpaired to someone who dose there training halfassed, what i am trying to say is that almost every style for the most part is very usefull but it is only as good as the person using it
@mrpsb7 just another glove fighter thinking he's an expert . and sambo isnt traditional, that ones pretty modern. you proved yourself ignorant, how do you feel?
Kung Fu is pretty crappy, but Tae Kwon Do is fairly good, of course you have to adapt it to whatever combat sport you are actually competing in, but it teaches some powerful kicks.
Rogan's statements are idiotic. If anyone takes up ANY martial art and expects that he'll be able to take on the world, then I'll show you a damned fool. It's not the art that's the problem, it's a person's expectations. Treat it as a specific discipline and you'll be a much happier person. Go and try to take out someone out with it and you'll likely find yourself 6 feet under before too long. Knives and guns have a way of doing that and MMA is NO exception.
If Joe Rogan did TaeKwonDo and got his ass handed to him when he started kickboxing, I wouldn't say it was TaeKwonDo that was lacking.I would say Joe Rogan was lacking for not knowing what he was doing at the time.
You can come from whatever style fighting going against whatever other style,
if you dont know what you're doing then you're the one obviously lacking.
@caviteboy304 Joe Rogan was a state champion in Taekwondo so he did know what he was doing. Do your research. Kickboxing is just more effective than TKD period. It's common sense. A style which focuses on full-contact and which let's you use both arms and legs > a pussy ass "martial art" which looks more like ballet.
@mrpsb7 let me tell you something you mma fanboy. idgaf if he was a champion in whatever style, a fight is a fight. period. your full contact style has rules that protects you from the most effective things in a fight, so dont tell me whats effective and whats not.
i dont practice tkd, i dont practice anything. i'm not in any style.
you obviously do not know what your talking about, bringing in ballet in this shit.
@caviteboy304 Lemme guess, you are talking about "lethal/deadly moves not allowed in a sporting contest blah blah etc..." my full contact style does not stop me from using these "deadly" moves in a street fight jackass. MMA features many deadly moves which can break your arms, choke you to death, knee you till your concussed etc... These are moves are PROVEN to work. Your eye pokes, bites, throat strikes etc.. would be more deadly used by an MMA fighter than a kung fu artist. PERIOD.
@mrpsb7 WOW WHAT AN IGNORANT RESPONSE. Everything you listed thats "featured" in MMA comes from the TMAs. lemme guess, you've never really had to fight before. See jackasses like you who glorify MMA, train for a sport. BTW i am a "MIXED MARTIAL ARTIST", in every sense of the term. I mix all that shit, knowing theres always something to learn. There is no ring style, there is no street style. There is only fighting, either you know how or you dont. by the looks of it YOU DON'T, FANBOY
@caviteboy304 Of course all MMA moves come from TMA's you dumb ass, I'm not saying they aren't! but what you see in MMA are all the EFFECTIVE moves, nowadays in TMA's you see INEFFECTIVE moves, which is my whole point! I have fought in both a boxing ring and a cage you prick I know what I am talking about. You sound like a complete idiot right now lol how do you feel?
@VaIkyereHowie every single move you see in the Octagon today is thousands and thousands of years old. What I define as TMA could be wrestling, Sambo, Karate, Muay Thai, Boxing etc...
The truth about MMA: 2 mongoloid morons beating their last brain cells out of each others heads in front of a bugerking emblem. Just kidding, not all of them are morons. I just don't get it, but that's just me.
I think he's talkin about Sanuces Ryu jiu jitsu. It's basically one step sparring, with a bunch of "death blows". It's pretty sad and funny at the same time.
cont... However, there are still some proper martial arts dojo that practise the proper way: hardcore.
These sort of dojos are usually led by senseis that are either ex-security guard, or member of defense force. The sort of people that knows the "art", but also have been in real actual fight on the street or in the war.
These dojos still maintain the attitude to TMA as "Martial Arts" - as in the technique and practise of fight.
cont... However, a massive chunk of TMA practitioner think of their arts as some sort of religions and their "senseis' or "sifus" are the prophets that cannot be questioned.
From there, grows the mentality of " I kick this way coz my sensei told me so", there is another worse example "I don't throw knee or elbow, coz there is no knee in TKD, only kick above the belt is allowed in TKD".
Some TMA "dojo" actually become "feel good" club filled with religious attitude and some become sport Cont..
I understand about Joe's point of view regarding TMA. However, I do think that it is the matter of attitude towards the "arts" that you are learning instead of the actual art itself.
For example, MMA itself consist of strikes (punch, elbow, kick and knees), throw (judo style, double leg, sprawl, etc), and ground game (like BJJ). Most of these techniques are derived from TMA anyway. However the diff. is that MMA people tend to think of these art in terms of what works. cont..
@sandvillage0000 What Lyoto Machida does has nothing at all in common with traditional karate. He simply trained in that style before becoming a mixed martial artist. Throwing front kicks instead of jabs and standing with a side forward instead of squared up doesn't mean he's doing karate.
@sandvillage0000 lol except Machida trained/trains in a very specific style of Karate, which resembles more of MMA than anything. If you look at footage from his karate days you can see that he competed in full contact Karate where you could punch kick to the face. 99% of Karate fighters out there who think they can emulate Machida are wrong simply because they don't train in the same style of Karate as he does..
about the wooden dummies that the interviewer mentioned "They just hang there" well so do punching bags. Its for training purposes. Joe rogan is a smart guy, he might want to see or try some more TMA that is not sport orientated at all, maybe something in S.E Asia perhaps. These will give you an advantage on the street (dependant on the person of course), in the cage with mma rules, probably not..Apples and oranges man, I like them both.
MMA is great for what it has achieved in combat sports. Yes, still a sport, no matter how aggressive it can be. I have still chosen the Traditional route. It suites my character and lifestyle best. Chowgar to be specific. Been doing it for 15 odd years. Its a shame that a lot of mma guys seem to have the lack of respect for TMA. Just like the imports vs domestics rant. I give credit to the guys in MMA who train their asses off, unlike some in TMA who dont, then get their butts kicked and complain

Important part is @0:19 Interviewer says using TMA for the street, but doesn't work in MMA. I have trained in Tae Kwon Do, and found there is indeed a big hole. Its geared for more point scoring, the aggressiveness that was found in the old training system in Korea is gone, in the west anyway. I stopped because I felt something was missing, especially the amount of kids under 12 joining in our classes. Even with the experienced I gained, I knew its not effective as it could of been.
@faztclix These point martial arts haven't been focused on actual combat for hundreds of years, they have no practical application unless your goal is to get your ass kicked.
@scottbaioisdead Your martial arts are old and outdated. They may have worked back in whatever century they were created in but not today. If the US military used airplanes and tanks form WW2 in today's warfare they'd get fucked up. They evolved, found more effective things while the rest of the stuff is outdated. Today we found modern effective martial arts compared to outdated TMA
@TobiasBoon1980 That's b/c your looking at it like your kung-fu is going to be unbeatable and the best, that's not true. It might be b/c you're not good enough yet, it could be b/c kung-fu was never meant to fight against boxing it was developed in the feudal era in Asia so the fighting style for it to counter was different), or it could be b/c of any number of reasons. To stop learning a certain style b/c you can't win against another isn't right, but also learning it to beat others is wrong
The interviewer is a complete idiot, in his argument he says Mawashi Geri and Mae Geri are useless techniques, and this forms his argument for how TMA does not work in MMA... Well lets break down what these "fancy" names are. Mawashi Geri is a round kick...to the body, leg or head. A Mae geri is a front kick, to the knee, body or head. Extremely common to see in MMA are these kicks. The interviewer thinks he can say some Japanese words and bedazzle the viewers into thinking he knows something.
all the people hating on this video more than likely wasted their time learning ineffective martial arts to the black belt level.. although i will admit that forms like tae kwon do isn't 100% useless.. look at Lyoto Machida
Dont forget, Kickboxing, Sanshou and of course All American in wrestling...he is almost forty, and is focusing on his movie career, so his fighting side is diminishing. Give him a bit more credit

I love a bit of mma but I hate it when people say it's the only way. I believe its better to be a master of one rather than a jack of (sod)all.
monkeyzx9 14 hours ago
It gets old telling these MMA worshippers about martial arts. I remember when MMA first started, they said kicks were useless in MMA; along comes Pete Williams with a roundhouse kick KO, and the Rogan's had to revamp their nonsense. It doesn't stop; striker (karate, kung fu) can't beat grappler; a front kick won't work; yeah, yeah, yeah..all of it worked when people actually use their art. Keep talking about what doesn't work so when an expert uses it, he can break your jaw and shut you up.
hakeem0436 1 day ago
@hakeem0436 thats what Ive been trying to explain to people, me and my friends watch these big UFC and K1 fights, even muay Thai and really analize the fights from an artist perspective and not a fan. there is a difference when a spectater is watching and booing the bjj guy for so called boring ground work and a so called exciting fight when two guys are throwing blows w/o proper form, and one happens to get knocked out as a result, lol then Bruce Buffer crows for THE NEW champion of the world

I think it's a bad idea to not be perfectly clear about the whole MMA vs TMA argument, because it deserves a fairly complex answer. The typical question is whether MMA is better than TMA or just the opposite I think a lot of people accept the question to be absolute, IE MMA is always better, period. No question that MMA technique is better than TMA in a cage fight with rules and refs, but foolish to think MMA is absolutely better than anything else in no holds barred hand to hand
bigjohn927 2 days ago
isn't MMA created by 'borrowing' different techniques from TMAs? so if TMAs weren't there in the first place, there won't be MMA too. i think it's 'dumb' to say that TMAs are useless cos of MMA. Also, TMAs does do a lot to improve a person and not just fighting, whereas MMA is just abt fighting (it is, after all, a sport). also, the martial art u pick also depends on ur psychic. there should be different styles to choose from based on one's physical strength and personality.

@JasonDanjafield You have a list of excuses for why you wasted your time on a dumb martial art. Karate is not effective in mma just a few tools from karate that have been modified for mma which is no longer the same style you learned from karate.

@lilsm555 I agree. The same goes for Kung Fu and all tmas

ChamorruWarrior 2 days ago
@lilsm555 btw I never said I practice Karate so dont speak out of pocket..the point i was making is that Joe was speeking ignorantly..I personally trained from the age of 12 in Karate but I have experience in many styles including tkd and "MMA" and I can say this...no style is a waste of time...they teach the artist to be humble yet leatal..instead of a reckless brute that constantly talks about kicking ass all the time. research please..everytime i get on the tube i read foolishness step it up!

@JasonDanjafield "For Joe Rogan to say that he obviously hasnt sparred with a Korean TkD practitioner"
If he won a US open I would be very surprised if he never sparred with a Korean TKD practitioner.
"Machida and Silva they are owning these so called MMA champs"
... Machida and Silva *are* MMA champs.
"MMA borrowed from all styles"
Yes it did. But it sorted out the shit that works from the shit that doesn't.
StealthDonkey007 2 days ago 2
@StealthDonkey007 .I respect your views but MMA is a sport and just that...MMA wont teach you presure points and how to use weapons..wont teach you how to take on multiple attackers intellegently because its a system built around rules of the ring...traditional styles were developed to fight wars and survive, through the years they been watered down..some styles of kung fu even banned in China...now we in America get a glance of something close to Vale Tudo and we think its the best thing ever..
JasonDanjafield 1 day ago
@JasonDanjafield nothing illegal about most pressure points in mma. Gloves are extremely thin, so that's not a limiting factor either.
MacFlanahan 1 day ago
@MacFlanahan Thanks for responding respectfully but there are multiple pp all over the body that cannot be attacked via punch alone. for example the tiger claw has a griping/ punch that has devastating effects also the snake strike to the wind pipe is not allowed in legal fighting nor groin nor eye attacks. you see when people start comparing a sport to an ancient art that has defended villages, family honor and kingdoms, thats when people start to sound foolish to me
JasonDanjafield 23 hours ago
@JasonDanjafield You're making two inferences which may be false
1) these strikes are significantly more damaging and easier to land than normal punching. It is true the eye pokes, throat attacks, and groin strikes hurt. They hurt alot. However, I've never been knocked out by one. I have been knocked out by a punch. Fight OVER in a way that the other attacks never did.
2) MMA fighters don't already know these techniques.
They get hit all the time by accident in training. They are fully aware.
MacFlanahan 12 hours ago
@JasonDanjafield
StealthDonkey007 8 hours ago

But I agree with the other statements.
olamprov 1 week ago
@olamprov you take an art like karate and modify it to work in MMA, it isn't karate. They did this once with monkey kung fu. Took out all the uselessness and in the end looked like crappy Kickboxing. Why go through all that when you can just take up muay thai?
Urbanvillenin 1 week ago 3
@Urbanvillenin true, I understand what you mean, but some people like me grew up doing karate. I did BJJ and Karate since I was little, and I know that it's easier to just to muay thai, but I already have the back ground in karate see? That's why it would take less time to modify it for guys like me who already invested a lot of time in Shotokan. And you have to admit, Andrei Arlovski (he does sambo too) and Lyoto Machida use Shotokan pretty effectively in the cage.
olamprov 1 week ago
What you're not looking at is the history of these art forms. Monkey kung fu often times uses wild movements, groin strikes, finger biting and eye gouges (Like a monkey) and uses a thing called a STICK, to beat the crap out of people with. Last time I checked the UFC did not alow any of these things because it's too dangerous and people might get hurt. When you apply rules to a system created to copy the way a freakin' CHIMPANZEE fights, of course it sucks, you took out 98% of the art...
ChamorruWarrior 2 days ago

There are some who just love to fight, which is great, but then there are those who love the sport aspect of MMA, the actual precision and art to it. either way, enjoy

to anybody who knows something about fighting: i'm a smaller guy (5'8", 130 lbs.), i've never been in a fight before and i study eastern philosophy so i'm more on non-violence side of things, but sometimes i can't help but be afraid of being attacked. i certainly don't go looking for trouble and i think that's what's kept me out of it so far. but, in case i ever do, does anyone have any advise about how someone like me with zero skills can defend myself?
youthank8 3 weeks ago
@youthank8 every human has weaknesses, dont go mma on anyone, use self defence i.e.1 do what u must to avoid harm to yourself. 2 kick knees, ankle if u have to (if u cant walk u cant attack) break fingers, use wristlocks if u can blah blah. 3 if u dont know how to punch dont try if u know the person is more experienced, it opens u up to counters and u could break ur hand, making defense difficult -impossible.

So you can't say it's useless, if you mix it up which is mma it is useful.

an effective trap is basically a a double parry too a strike in one fluent motion, not too off the wall like mr.joe is making it out to be. and also there are reversal type traps. they are an entry to your punches,neck-throat shots, headbutts, and elbows. you put all those together the guy aint getting up. tell the navy seals trapping is bullshit
mediteraceltic 3 weeks ago
kung fu itself shouldnt be used in the octagon by itself.

You can't say that martial art old 4000 years that includes whole philosophy is shit.

lol kung fu is shit
minimalist34 4 weeks ago 7
Kung Fu is pretty crappy, but Tae Kwon Do is fairly good, of course you have to adapt it to whatever combat sport you are actually competing in, but it teaches some powerful kicks.

LOL at pussies who do worthless martial arts getting butt hurt about this clip.
trollinyousoftly7 4 weeks ago
Rogan's statements are idiotic. If anyone takes up ANY martial art and expects that he'll be able to take on the world, then I'll show you a damned fool. It's not the art that's the problem, it's a person's expectations. Treat it as a specific discipline and you'll be a much happier person. Go and try to take out someone out with it and you'll likely find yourself 6 feet under before too long. Knives and guns have a way of doing that and MMA is NO exception.
LedWhisky69 4 weeks ago
If Joe Rogan did TaeKwonDo and got his ass handed to him when he started kickboxing, I wouldn't say it was TaeKwonDo that was lacking.I would say Joe Rogan was lacking for not knowing what he was doing at the time.
You can come from whatever style fighting going against whatever other style,
if you dont know what you're doing then you're the one obviously lacking.
caviteboy304 1 month ago
@caviteboy304 Joe Rogan was a state champion in Taekwondo so he did know what he was doing. Do your research. Kickboxing is just more effective than TKD period. It's common sense. A style which focuses on full-contact and which let's you use both arms and legs > a pussy ass "martial art" which looks more like ballet.
mrpsb7 4 weeks ago
@mrpsb7 let me tell you something you mma fanboy. idgaf if he was a champion in whatever style, a fight is a fight. period. your full contact style has rules that protects you from the most effective things in a fight, so dont tell me whats effective and whats not.
i dont practice tkd, i dont practice anything. i'm not in any style.
you obviously do not know what your talking about, bringing in ballet in this shit.
DON'T YOU DARE LOOK DOWN ON BALLET.
THAT SHIT IS GOOD FOR BALANCE & COORDINATION
caviteboy304 4 weeks ago
@caviteboy304 Lemme guess, you are talking about "lethal/deadly moves not allowed in a sporting contest blah blah etc..." my full contact style does not stop me from using these "deadly" moves in a street fight jackass. MMA features many deadly moves which can break your arms, choke you to death, knee you till your concussed etc... These are moves are PROVEN to work. Your eye pokes, bites, throat strikes etc.. would be more deadly used by an MMA fighter than a kung fu artist. PERIOD.
mrpsb7 4 weeks ago 7
@mrpsb7 WOW WHAT AN IGNORANT RESPONSE. Everything you listed thats "featured" in MMA comes from the TMAs. lemme guess, you've never really had to fight before. See jackasses like you who glorify MMA, train for a sport. BTW i am a "MIXED MARTIAL ARTIST", in every sense of the term. I mix all that shit, knowing theres always something to learn. There is no ring style, there is no street style. There is only fighting, either you know how or you dont. by the looks of it YOU DON'T, FANBOY
caviteboy304 4 weeks ago
@caviteboy304 Of course all MMA moves come from TMA's you dumb ass, I'm not saying they aren't! but what you see in MMA are all the EFFECTIVE moves, nowadays in TMA's you see INEFFECTIVE moves, which is my whole point! I have fought in both a boxing ring and a cage you prick I know what I am talking about. You sound like a complete idiot right now lol how do you feel?
mrpsb7 4 weeks ago
@mrpsb7 Not all mma moves come from tma
VaIkyereHowie 3 weeks ago
@VaIkyereHowie every single move you see in the Octagon today is thousands and thousands of years old. What I define as TMA could be wrestling, Sambo, Karate, Muay Thai, Boxing etc...
mrpsb7 3 weeks ago
@mrpsb7 WRONG!
Judo techniques and Tae Kwon do techniques are actually pretty modern.
So try your luck again.
VaIkyereHowie 2 weeks ago
@caviteboy304 Wrong. A lot of moves are not from TMA. Superman punch for example wasn't, nor were a LOT Of bjj moves

These spirits are the same spirit I see in MMA.
Respect.
rimidalvetarak 1 month ago
Some TMA "dojo" actually become "feel good" club filled with religious attitude and some become sport Cont..
rimidalvetarak 1 month ago
I understand about Joe's point of view regarding TMA. However, I do think that it is the matter of attitude towards the "arts" that you are learning instead of the actual art itself.
For example, MMA itself consist of strikes (punch, elbow, kick and knees), throw (judo style, double leg, sprawl, etc), and ground game (like BJJ). Most of these techniques are derived from TMA anyway. However the diff. is that MMA people tend to think of these art in terms of what works. cont..

people said karate was not real but then came in machida.
sandvillage0000 1 month ago
@sandvillage0000 What Lyoto Machida does has nothing at all in common with traditional karate. He simply trained in that style before becoming a mixed martial artist. Throwing front kicks instead of jabs and standing with a side forward instead of squared up doesn't mean he's doing karate.
Akiramun 1 month ago
@sandvillage0000 lol except Machida trained/trains in a very specific style of Karate, which resembles more of MMA than anything. If you look at footage from his karate days you can see that he competed in full contact Karate where you could punch kick to the face. 99% of Karate fighters out there who think they can emulate Machida are wrong simply because they don't train in the same style of Karate as he does..
mrpsb7 4 weeks ago
about the wooden dummies that the interviewer mentioned "They just hang there" well so do punching bags.

Even with the experienced I gained, I knew its not effective as it could of been.
faztclix 1 month ago
@faztclix These point martial arts haven't been focused on actual combat for hundreds of years, they have no practical application unless your goal is to get your ass kicked.

@scottbaioisdead Your martial arts are old and outdated. They may have worked back in whatever century they were created in but not today. If the US military used airplanes and tanks form WW2 in today's warfare they'd get fucked up. They evolved, found more effective things while the rest of the stuff is outdated. Today we found modern effective martial arts compared to outdated TMA

Damn, I was trying Kung Fu on a guy I knew who boxes, and he was whooping me. This was yesterday...where is the full interview for this by the way?
TobiasBoon1980 1 month ago
@TobiasBoon1980 That's b/c your looking at it like your kung-fu is going to be unbeatable and the best, that's not true. It might be b/c you're not good enough yet, it could be b/c kung-fu was never meant to fight against boxing it was developed in the feudal era in Asia so the fighting style for it to counter was different), or it could be b/c of any number of reasons. To stop learning a certain style b/c you can't win against another isn't right, but also learning it to beat others is wrong
ThisHolographicLife 1 month ago
