Relations? give me a break folks. This guy "Gaddafi" has no problem to cut ties with any country over a silly thing. Tripoli/Bern - Libya has shocked Swiss officials by announcing plans to reduce its economic ties to Switzerland, apparently in continued protest over the brief arrest in July of the son of Libyan leader Moamer Gadaffi.
look how long it took the west(europe and now america0 to reach the "civilised state of democracy"at least 1000 yrs of plagues and 100 yr wars,60yrs wars revolutions and oligarchial hemophiliacs....america had to throw off the colonial yoke of europe and the dogmatic positions of monarchys(read dicattors nowadays)...many of these places in the mid east still have a basic feudal stlye of governance...peasants,clerics and the monarchy..do they need reformations and growing pains?they need jobs, too
its true that their ways are Centuries behind the rest of the world both technologically and socially. But then again whos to say this is better now being enslaved my the government instead of poverty?
bull u dont know you talking about. US bombed and killed his step daughter. People tend to take that personally whrn someone kills family. Libya supported many african and arab rebel groups. clarify statement or not post them.
the americans again remind us of there hipocricy. They say they toppled saddam beacause hes a tyrant and they want to spread freedom. On they other hand there good friends with gaddafi, whose frozen all freedoms of speech in his country and commited some of the worst atrocities in the west. Long live the truth, long live fathi eljahmi and muslim brotherhood. Gods punishment will bestow all tyrrants.
worst atrocities? Talk about Israel's atrocities please everyone believes what they hear, the palestinians are bombed, shot, school children but since the Israelies did it, its just a mistake but when a palestinian does it, it is terrorism give me a break you Islam haters.
Brother im also a muslim. Libya is a country with the seventh largest oil reserves, yet it has no institutions. There is huge unemplyment and corruptions rife. This mans been ruling for 39 years. How could you defend him
I am not defending him but I understand all this roots to years of anger + anger which creates nothing but fire. Most of all I am defending not him but our countries people, I don't want America doing to us what they are doing to Iraqis, qaddafi is a changed man and nobody knows whats in his heart at the time being, qaddafi never killed anyone and god knows until they opposed his regime harshly with no respect. Maybe if we dealt with reconcilation and advising
We all Support the palestinians and there jihad. But you must remember that we are muslim we are better than them. There are islamic laws relating to wa which we must folow. Killing innocent civillians is not 1 of them. If they kill children, it dosnt mean we kill there children!
How little you know about Arab/Middle Eastern history zutroy. Iran had a democracy in 1953 under Prime Minister Mosaddeq. He was overthrown and put under house arrest after he privatised US and UK Oil firms and the son or Reza Shah was instated as King of Iran.
Many countries have been on the poise of democracy only to have it thwarted by the US/UK/France because of their national (oil) interests.
Look Iranian resistance/Iranian Liberation Army up.
Now let's say Lybia was freed from this 'tyrant' and democracy (US style) was restored. You think that Ali Tarhouni would be accepted in Lybia? You think he wouldn't be assassinated? He would instal a Batista style dictatorship under the name of democracy and do exactly what Ghadaffi is doing. The only difference is he would have US backing. You should do some research into Middle Easter/Arab history to see that whatever they say is a lie.
I don't think that Libya is ready for democracy, I honestly don't believe any of the Middle East can handle it. All the Middle Eastern pharmacists I work with (which is a majority of them here) are able to live in this democracy in peace and happiness but not one thinks it would work in their home country any better than it "works" in Egypt. Democracy in the Middle East is just a dictatorship with a smile, there i no difference and the people don't want to work for one.
I also feel like "democracy" in the Middle East is synonymous with US govt. intervention and meddling. Most middle eastern states just innately hate the US for the meddling past in their countries, although the UK really has messed things up a lot more since their first oil deals with Persia. The only way working democracy will come to the Middle East in my lifetime is the same way it came to America - by revolution, and probably a violent one at that.
I am glad you understand why the Arab world/Middle East (Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan are not Arab countries) hate the West in general.
I could go on in lengths about Iraqi, Iranian and Middle Eastern History in general but you summarised it.
It will take a violent revolution as no real revolution is peaceful (peaceful revolutions fail even quicker than violent ones). They need to be without outside intereference and they have to be carried out by the people.
You are accusing me of looking at the situation from a biased point of view? Please explain to me what an objective point of view is. The holding of people for years without trial, hope and torturing them is me being biased? What about the 13 year olds who were taken to Guantanamo? Now the US can claim there are no minors held because they're all adults now. And you dare say I am an extremist?
If you haven't been following the Guantanamo issue in US courts, I can't educate you in a 500-word blurb. There are trials held at guantanamo just not civilian trials. No combatants died in guantanamo, no combatants went insane, waterboarding is "torture" but it's not physically harmful. If you are going to just talk about Guantanamo I really don't care, it has no relation to Libya and it doesn't even violate international law, why don't you look it up.
I don't need to follow the Guantanamo issue in the US courts because your regime has stated no US court has jurisdiction over Guantanamo. Waterboarding is torture, it is illigal under the Geneva convention (the same convention the US is trying to force down everyone's throat while claiming it doesn't apply to them). So, as you can see it is relevant to this discussion as human rights, democracy and rule of law are mentioned while none exists in the US.
Of course Guantanamo violates international law, the US shouldn't even be in Cuba in the first place. It is also completely illegal to detain people for years without trial, to torture them, sexually humiliate them, and so on.
Waterboarding is physically harmful but more importantly, it's psychologically harmful. Many people who have had it used on them are unable to take showers, or even be outside when it rains, because of their fear of water. It sounds absurd but it's true.
Dermoni as I said, US corporations were suffering due to the sanctions. I just never said those corporations were Halliburton, Exxon and other oil companies. BP, Shell and European companies never accepted the sanctions and Lybia actually thrived despite the sanctions because they did business with European firms rather than US ones. Berlusconi went to Lybia to ensure Lybia would continue to sell oil to Italy despite agreements having been signed with US oil firms.
This second addition you put is much more accurate, and also much more true. The about face in US policy was because US business want to be able to go into Libya without tariffs and without looking bad domestically. Libya is still an abominable state but US lobbyist representing Oil and gas companies wanted better access to Libyan markets and resources. The US is acting purely out of domestic economic interest.
The segment was well done, if you call the professor a "disgrace to his country and an advocate of terrorism", you are clearly a borderline extremist. I'm not relating that to any groups or violence, but the vitriol with which you speak of anyone who doesn't hate America shows you are insanely biased and not viewing any of this through an accurate lens.
By the way, all the detainees of Gauntanamo charged with crimes get trials, and almost every "combatant" taken has been released already.
You said everything that needed to be said "somethingawful01", the one thing I am not understanding about lockerbie is why one of them was freed and the other one jailed that shows Libya had nothing to do with it, 1 man alone wouldn't have done that. The fact is Libya never done it and through the sanctions for all those years its only the Libyan people who were oppressed, the government hasn't changed so what was the point of sanctions? You just killed more libyans through sanctions
What is funny is that Berlusconi paid Lybia the money that Lybia said would pay the victims of Lockerby. Lybia hasn't paid the victims of course as Lybia was simply a scapegoat and had nothing to do with the bombing. However because Ghadaffi stood up to the US/UK and the so called 'International Community' he was punished by years of sanctions (which everyone violated) and had to give two men up accused of the bombing as appeasement.
Ali Tarhouni is such a sad little boy. While his bitterness is understandable his going on and on about human rights, terrorism and other points show that he is a US stooge, like those who claimed Iraq would welcome the invaders and occupiers with flowers and not death. He is a disgrace to his country and he is an advocate of state terrorism and is a supporter of US aggression.
One calls Lybia a rogue state and the other says Lybia has returned to the 'International Community'. Neither mention that the worlds number one Rogue state is the US with Israel in tow. The International Community is the US and its pathetic allies. Also they talk about democracy and the rule of law. Let us ask those in Guantanamo Bay and others held without trial about rule of law.
At 08:00 it's mentioned that US firms were suffering discrimination and that is why the sanctions were lifted.
Now now..never mention the bombing of Qadhafi's home by the good ol gipper, which killed his little 2 yr old daughter.
