For about the last 8 years I believe all new hydraulics, and modernized hydraulics are fitted with a rupture line safety. If the oil in the line starts to flow faster then the rated speed it closes the line stopping the car from falling.
Seeing as it's a hydraulic elevator I'd say no. Hydros can't free fall, The main jack used to to push the cab up the hoist way is fed by a either a 2 or a 21/2" heavy gauge pipe. The car could only fall as fast as oil could flow out of the pipe if the pipe were to bust or break. Which isn't any were close to a free fall. This has happened on construction sites a few times, when the pipe has been hit and broken while the car is at the top of the hoist way, allot of guys aren't even knocked over
The inside of that cab looks like a standard Richmond Elevator unit. I haven't seen the hoistway, and I would be very surprised if Richmond Elevator would install a Kone product, seeing as Richmond manufactures and installs their own units. It may have been installed by Kone, then modernized by Richmond Elevator at some point, but even at that, changing the car cab almost never happens in a modernization. Besides, Richmond units are known industry wide as being pieces of crap.
Dillards Women Sunland Park Mall used to have square buttons like that. They got replaced with circle buttons. U can still see those old square buttons used as the indicator.
thats probably the slowest elevator I've been in.

@elevatorman191 : So is it really a death-trap elevator?
elevatorgeek762 2 years ago
its not a death-trap, it just has the big bumps, the Bay in Guildford has a death-trap though, due to the bad motor
