  • I know it's been mentioned, but he's playing chess with Death... Not the Devil. The reason I bring it up is that these subtitles aren't the humble effort of somebody on youtube... they're actually on the DVD. So why in the hell couldn't they find someone to translate it who understood the whole point of the film?

  • It's actually Death, not the Devil.

  • This is my favourite scene from the movie. I am moved when Block is asking for God to communicate with him and Death replies with "He is silent" and also "I call out to him in the darkness and it appears nobody is there" with Death replying "Perhaps there isn't anyone". This battle of words and emotions is something only mastered by those who can make us feel what the characters are feeling and Bergman is one of those who has perfected this craft. May he R.I.P.

  • Political attained the death of Eros yet the political aim is the Liberation of Eros.

  • I have been in that church :D

  • Its Death, not the devil

  • They have translated it a little to kind... they have not with the expletives, that they are actually saying in swedish... :P

for exemple: 0:19; he is actually saying: "Why the hell shall I always make them happy?"

    If anyone was interested :)

  • One thing I questioned after seeing this film last night, was why Bergman makes it so obvious to us that Block is 'confessing' to Death.

I would have assumed something like this would have been best to leave until the reveal after he has given away where he intends to go in the chess game.

  • @uruseiranma The chess game does not matter anymore. That scene is a symbolic way of saying :"You have no way out". From then on, Death actually disappears, giving Block indeed the extra time he "needed", to save the lives of the only innocents, the couple with the baby, which were to be spared. The others were eventually caught by Death at God's will to be sent to hell (don't know about Block), Refer to the Book of Revelations and its seven Seals, the last part of the Bible.Yes, Bergman.

  • My favorite scene from any movie ever... thanks for posting.

  • The 7TH SEAL is now being opened on IAMJESUSmovie channel.

  • He says DÖDEN, DÖDEN!. Döden = Death, the translation is wrong.

  • Great movie!

  • Its not the devil, hes playing chess with death which is a completely diffrent character.

  • Awesome scene, thanks for posting it.

  • Thank you very much for posting this scene! I think this is one of the best scenes of cinema ever. This movie is awesome, as well as every Bergman's movie I'd watched. They made me think very much about life and other things, and that's why I love them.

  • The dialogue is amazing in this film, Block feels and thinks the way I do.

  • Why does the translation say Devil when it's Death his talking and playing chess with.

  • Good question! In the translation that I've seen, Death claims to be "unknowing." That seems to be a rather important point. Death doesn't know whether or not there is a Devil or God or Emptiness (As the options are stated in the witch burning scene) lying in wait for them any more than the characters themselves know.

  • Yes that is true. However I am from Sweden and knows what they're saying. And the translation in this clip is plain wrong, the knight never mentions the devil, only Death.

  • it has been quite sometime since last I saw this, but if I remember correctly Death promises the knight that at the "end" he would reveal all his secrets?

  • @catbird007 No, too bad for Arturius, he doesn't. At all. He(Death) says to block he has no secrete to show and no need to know.

  • Right! It's important to remember that the Knight is dealing with Death and not the Devil; if it were indeed the Devil, his apprehensions about God's existence would be lessened.

  • The subtitles on the DVD I have display "Death" as the translation here. To me "Devil" doesnt make sense, Death is more powerful.

In fact, a theologian friend of mine said that some theologians rationalise the personification of death as Jesus himself - which does makes sense, considering how one acts in front of Death.

Also, in my DVD, Jons says "Wherever we turn, our backside is behind us" or something like that, rather than "Its always your own arse you sit on".

    I love this film.

  • It's a poor translation. He's not saying djävul or bövel - "devil" - but rather döden. Death, with a capital "d".

  • Wonderful scene, though. Thank you for posting it.

  • SEVENTH SEAL OF A SEVENTH SEEEEEEEEAL!

    arf arf arf!

please post the scene where he tells the blacksmith to kill his wifer:-D

  • You Rule for Posting this Scene!

    Thank You!

  • Bergman's other works are boring! But with this terrible, magnifecent juggernaut of poetic beauty all is forgiven (wasted hours at the cinema)! Squire RULES!!! Przypomina mi Szarleja od Sapka.

  • i agree, i tried to watch the other films, very dull, but this is my fav film ever. awesome.

  • It's not the best translation, but I'm right with the squire, me. Since god really doesn't exist, why not enjoy life like a sharp and moral feller? Not like the terrorists of 'faith'...(supply expletive, if you have the vocabulary).

  • Cheers, squire! And it's death, death.

  • It's not the Devil, it's Death. The symbolism gets lost in translation. He wants to know for sure if God exist. Thats's why he wants a respit from Death.

  • I LOVE THIS FILM SO FUCKING MUCH.

  • Timeless.

  • I am not sure that Shakespeare could have done better. This level of understanding the spiritual struggles of humanity is unparalleled -- RIP Ingmar.

  • Let's all rape the ashes of Shakespeare. I mean how unexpected wouldn't that be? Think of the headlines!

  • Are feeling that the Shakespeare reference is irreverent, Wolfy? And bordering on cliche?

  • its swedish
