What annoys me about these soaps is that the TV guides say "Will *insert character name here* die?" Yet you know he/she will be back. What's the point?
Emmerdale with Cain recently, a few months ago with Yusef in Eastenders he was supposed to die when Phil and Masood threatened him. If you're really gonna kill a character then actually do it yeah?
You had forgot Neighbours and Home & Away. because of that Kylie 'n' Jason, Stefan Dennis, Dannii Minogue, and Craig McLachlan all became household names. They're actually imported from Australia, but however you didn't include the recent Hollyoaks titles, a re-mix of the old theme tune which is abit better and also there was Hollyoaks Late, E20 (EastEnders spinoff), and Gary's Army Stories you didnt include.
The Bill started off as a drama, became a soap for a while, but has now returned to being a drama series. But shows like "Mile High", "Footballer's Wives" and "Dream team" Definately should not be in there. The only true British Soap I can think of that is missing was "Families".
oh an grange hill ahh i mis da gud old dayz im 18 yrs old bt i rather class ma self a 90's kid coz i still rememba al da classics type 'are you are 90's kid' or 'remembering da 90's' if u really are u'll luv it i think dat shud be for those hu r bout 21+
hiya its the 3rd one just after the bill which isint a soap either its a police drama who ever created this neads the sack dont people no the dif between a soap and a drama
if the bill is supose to be a soap why isint it shown at the soap awards dont you think am right
So what is the difference? Just because something doesn't appear at the soap awards does not mean it isn't a soap. A soap is an ongoing episodic work of fiction. The Bill is a soap that is set in the workplace as opposed to those set in residential areas. For a time the BBC did not call Eastenders a soap because they thought drama sounded better. That is the case will the Bill and Casualty. They are soaps but think they are better.
That's where you're wrong! The Bill, Holby City, Casualty, Mile High etc, are dramas. They work on an episodic basis, which means they have *self contained episodes* (themes). Most of the time the story begins and ends in one episode. Soaps are continual - never ending. Episodes are stand alone. That's the difference. For the record: dramas that work in a soapy style, still have self contained stories (eg patient-of-the-week) making them dramas and not soaps.
I beg to differ, there are soaps (like Spanish telenovelas) that are long and continuous but needed to end sooner or later. English-language soaps have the only distinction of lasting for years.
Soaps can also be considered dramas and vice versa and can be considered synonymous with each other.
The 2 terms may probably differ on how people tagged them as such. Peace :D
EastEnders has covered real issues such as: Debt Rape Child Abuse Euthanasia AIDS Cancer Homophobia Drug Addiction Murder Domestic Violence and so on... While Brookie did take on some very big issues they were often sensationalist whereas EastEnders kept realism.
Eastenders covered many aspects of life in the 80s as I mention above. Currently it won awards for it's portrayal of Bi-Polar Disease and awards for covering Child Abuse something which needed to adressed. They will also show the stabbing of a young teenager next week, something which has affected the lives of many young people in London and is an important issue. Corrie and Emmerdale wont do it so EastEnders will!
i watch eastenders but brookside was the best, it had real life day to day stuff. eastenders is going shit now and if that is realism have a look at the eastend its not all houses, brookside was the best and always was
"going shit"? Well I'm afraid 14 million people disagree with you because that was the amount of people who tuned in to watch EastEnders on Christmas Day 2007 not to mention 30 million in the 1980s...a record only EastEnders holds. I miss Brookie but there's a reason it's no longer shown.
oh fuck off will u brookside went off air cause of the bastard phil redmond, and eastenders is GOING SHIT AND Y HAS VEIWING FIGURES BEING GOING DOWN LETS THINK Y UMM CAUSE ITS GOING SHIT
HA! Going down? They are going UP! Eastenders was the most watched show in 2007, beating all other soaps! This year is looking just as good with ratings staying strong and above 10 million on many nights. Get your facts right please before posting abuse.

That version of the Take the High Road theme tune was the second one and was used from 1982-86.

Whoniverse93 3 years ago
I think you will find that apart from a couple most of them were and are soaps and the "dramas" now write in a soap style.

And Footballer's Wives and Mile High are what we here in the U. S. would call Primtime Soaps
