it's simple really, old widow simply living her life day to day missing her husband. she's making carrot cake (to add to the story's theme to just another day) and the moth (which means just another annoyance at the begining) is doing what moths do. so the whole problem emerges between the female widow and the moth and she bakes it. she falls asleep and dies (old and it was her time) the oven and the moth (since this was the last things she saw) were the gateway to afterlife for her.

Basicly she dies in her sleep, everything after that is her going to (insert religon afterlife or I am an atheist comment here) to be with her husband and since I belive in heaven (no i am not christan or any other religon) that picture symbolises there happyness (chris gardner style FTW) and content that there together again. I remembered this little movie today in english class. we were discussing a poem that was about looking towards the future with courage even though death is something we have to live with

this short film reproduces this fear and beauty better than anything. even if you do not believe in God, even if you have no religion, even if you are unsure, this movie is so beautiful because it really has a great meaning for anyone who's lost someone they hold dear

This is very powerful, and Waits' music has become very polished. He and Brennan (his wife, I believe) have managed to produce some great music together since the release of Frank's Wild Years and beyond. He has definitely found his voice and his sound and it must be working because he has been parked in the vicinity of this old-timey, hobo music for twenty some years now. His music clearly lends itself well to the emotional impact of this short.
