You are correct for the most part. but my understanding is that it could do a vertical take off, but would have to be nearly empty on fuel to do it. Thus requiring it to refuel immediately after take-off. So to say the least a vertical take-off is impractical.

I worked on the design & this is fake. It's called STOVL for a reason, short takeoff vertical landing. The fake job was fairly well done though. As far as I know the plane would never takeoff vertically because being full of fuel & weapons it's very heavy. Weight is a HUGE problem for this plane. Lockheed Martin was beating the crap out Engineers to get ounces out. I'm not kidding.

Modeling and lighting are pretty good, animation is a little wonky.

The doors open differently on the real jet though.

And I only say that at a high budget feature level.

@bigturk74 STOVL means Short Take-Off and Vertical landing. It can do a Vertical Take-Off, though it is called STOVL because not all hovering aircrafts can do a short take off. An F-35b is designed to do shorter regular take offs (like a carrier take off without the use of the catapult per say). A VTOL (vertical take off and landing) would be more like a helicopter.

Well to correct everyone so far, this plane might possibly be scrapped due to budgets and also partner countries possibly pulling out. Due to ITAR arms restrictions the British might be pulling out of this project (sorry Brits doesn't look like a stealth VTOL in your carrier group yet) But in the past many projects of this magnitude have been scrapped, like the Comanche stealth helicopter, a first of its time i might add. It is a shame to see such a genius work go to waist...

I don't know where you got your info but the U.S Sec of Defense has already placed a orders for the F-35. the only thing that got moved was the operation date which was going to be 2011 now it's early 2012.

fact the President of the USA was halted the F-22 to 187 F-22 to be made and is riding with making 1300 F-35's and a newer model F-15 with thrust vectoring.
