  • far better band than U2

  • ....."Like a Sex Machine!" The Godfather of New Wave!

  • will sargent is one heck of a guitar player, very under rated, i grow up with these guys good times had by all,god bless pete to miss ya

  • Nat is featured in song. Danced to when I fall in love at my wedding.

Echo / Irvine meadows CA during a summer shower in SO CAL Great song

  • incredible!

  • ABSOLUTE PURRR-EFFING_FECTION !!!!

  • this is beautiful

  • Petes drumming on this is awesome

  • Lay Down Thy Raincoat & Groove.

  • Pete, there, complete power.

  • This still sounds, as it always did, like a version of "Someone I Care About" by The Modern Lovers by someone mainlining serious horlicks. Only less interesting than that.

  • U2 is fucking lame

  • Echo and The Bunnymen quoting James Brown.. I think my head just popped right off...

  • ThIs is awesome... U2 is tiresome... thats the difference...

  • It's the version from the Echo EP aka the White Album. Superbly awesome!

  • bravo!! who put this dam thing up :-)

  • geo69xr: i think that's the british style of walking shorts; or an adult diaper. my brother had this concert as an ep; still blows most stuff away. thanks, stormerrrrrrrr

  • Who stole who?

Does anybody else notice how similar U2 is to Echo and the Bunnymen, especially in their live show? Notice the quoting of the old Beatles songs, the whisper to a scream, the taking of the stage light and shining it into the audience. These were all staples of U2's since roughly the same time, and U2 has turned their act into a billion dollar industry. So I ask, whose act came first?

  • He is so channeling Jim Morrison.

  • WTF !! whats with one of guitarists wearing diapers at 5:42 ???

  • @sugarandspice4815 you're right and marquitos2875 is wrong... then again, marquitos didn't realize you had your head up your ass when you watched this video at the time you made your observation about Ian appearing high in this clip... cheers!!!

  • bands come and go , music changes. this band keep on going as the best ever.

spines down yer bak . like first e , line whatever. mcculloch and co so in tune and there. proving a god like status. orgasmic.

  • i love how punk this version is. "here's a light." hahaha the fan running up, the pogo, the mixes with all those rock n roll and r&b songs from the past. this version is top notch bunnymen. the best.

  • Wow - Isn't This The 'Live @ The Royal Albert Hall' Version Of D IT C, Used To Be Available On Vinyl Back In The Day - Therefore An Official/Sanctioned Take. One Of Their Finest Moments: Will, Pete, Les @ The Top Of Their Game. Ian, Not (way) Over Doing It w/The Hist Of R'N'R Lyrics 101, & The 'We're-Real-Musicians' Bit w/ Strings'N'Things Doesn't Get In The Way (wonder of wonders). Another (seemingly tho not actually) Longer/Lesser Version Seems To Be All That's Avail. Tell/Show Me I'm Wrong..?

  • can someone PLEASE upload the LP version of this great song?

  • @sugarandspice4815... gee, do you think that the beer Ian takes a drink from at the beginning of this song has anything to do him appearing to be high?

  • @marquitos2875 No need to get sarcastic, I didn't notice.

Okay, he's just drunk then. :-)

  • Is it just me, or does Ian McCullogh look high?

  • @TheMarrakeshRed John Peel was the man who, thanks to his radio show, got me into Echo, and I have vivid memories of getting into Psychedelic Furs, the Fire Engines and Orange Juice at around the same time, in 1981. And, oh yes, that other song that sort of became him, in 1978. True Confessions, the b side, possibly it's equal. Well that should have been kept as the follow up.

  • very nice..i love the bunnymen

  • Turn Up The Guitar!!!!! Who's ever mixing this sucks. Great version.

  • @kjanselmi I agree..

  • so glad you posted this stormerrr! i always loved listening ti this on vinyl and now to see it! so cool!

  • Probably their best version, just need it louder!

  • anyone know if "back of love" is anywhere on youTube? The one from this EP that starts with "Why cant you shoot a man in the back?

  • Yep, from 4:00-4:12 was not on the EP. Am I wrong?

  • yer right

  • OMFG I LOve you for posting this! I had this version on cassette back in the day, it got eaten by my car stereo and I was afraid I would never hear it again! I've looked and looked, it hasnt been put on any "best of" or any compilation that I know of. Correct me if Im wrong, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

    "Thank you, goodnight...it sucked"....classic

  • oh shit, it is "Thank you, goodnight...Im tired". I could have swore it was "It sucked". There's another part of this song that sounds different than what I remembered..was this edited?

I played it so loud thats probably just what i heard. You know...sarcasm and self-deprecation was cool even then. Well, "im tired" is weak...I'll remember it as I please.

  • @dang9669 YEAH MEE TOO!!! I had this on 12" vinyl.. You are totally correct! It is ,to me ,the best compilation, too. I remember hearing it for the first time at a club in Detroit Called St Andrews Hall. The entire club was moshing, rocking, dancing all over the place to this tune. Was a Saturday night and the place was packed,,,Aaaaaaaah good times! Where has all the good music gone today???

  • @dang9669 The 2007 best of (The Killing Moon) has it on the second CD, number 16.

  • @devasterbr TY so much. I have been looking for this version of do it clean for years. Just ordered the CD. Again TY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Definitely my Favourite Bunnymen song. Great to see them still going...

  • Saw the early tours in San Francisco. The plaid years! October 30, 1981 at Wolfgang's in SF was simply one the best best "New Psychedelic" shows that I witnessed. As they walked off the stage as silhouettes...just silence....at first. Everyone was just blown to bits.........

  • One of the best early versions....rock!

  • RIP Pete. Your sadly missed.

  • at 5:42..the guitarist is wearing granny shorts.

  • This sounds exactly like the version on the EP record that had a blue jacket... does anyone else remember... it also had Rescue on it. I had it when I was in 9th grade but lost it somewhere along the way, would kill to have it now!

Going to see them tonight for the first time since I was 14 years old, so freaking excited!!!!!!

  • Yes this is the same version on the EP. I have it too! this is one of the best live versions of "Do it clean" ever recorded if not the best. See em' in LA Saturday! ya!!!

  • Comment removed

  • After last night in Oakland, I'm seriously considering driving down to LA to see them again on Sat. SO FUN!!!!! They didn't do Do it Clean but they did Rescue, the Cutter, Back of Love!!!!!!! In addition to Ocean Rain, which was just amazing. Freaking awesome. You'll have a great time at the show!!

  • I believe it's from

    "Wilson Pickett-Land of a 1000 Dances"

although others have covered this tune.

Very contagious atmosphere on this song...

  • This is simply outstanding. Band , vocals, everything are perfection. Anyone know what song the "Do you know how to dance as Pony Maloney" section is from?

  • Boney Maroney is an OLD rock standard from the 50s I think. Beatles used to cover it I believe.

It is also referenced in Echo's "My Kingdom" from the amazing Ocean Rain album: "If you know how to dance to Boney Maroney, he's doing the ballet on both of his wrists."

  • I believe it's from Patti Smith's "Land: Horses / Land of a Thousand Dances / La Mer (De)... from the album Horses

  • Yes, RAH July 1983. I was there as well.

What a quality. Thanks for posting!

  • Lucky you! I was too young (and not living in England) at that time!

  • who's the other guitar player with the blondish swooping bangs hair? u can see him around 1:36...

  • Michael Mooney. He played for psychedelic furs as well.

  • I was there, at RAH. Worra night.

  • Was this the Albert Hall "Lay down your raincoats and dance"?

  • "Lay Down Your Raincoats and Groove" yeah this is a performance from that. Amzing quality, it's nice to see Echo in their prime.

  • Thanks for posting this! I have this version on a vinyl EP along with "The Cutter", "Never Stop", and "Rescue". I've neer been able to find this video anywhere. I wish they'd release a video of the Royal Albert Hall performances. What was it, a three night engagement?

  • sadlsore- YES YES YES, we need a DVD from the Royal Albert Hall performances. Why the f*** don't we have it yet?

  • This is Echo at The Royal Albert Hall, 1983 (NOT at the Palladium as someone here thought). Ian sounds INCREDIBLE, and this extended version--not the album version--is not this good anywhere else. "Thank you. Good Night. I'm tired." LOVE "EM!

  • reply to sadlsore - it was a series of fundraisers for Greenpeace. with the cure headling one of the nights and EATB another night, I went to the Cure and EATB, sadly i cant rememebr who headliend the 3rd, but i do rememeber that they were the bands to see at that time, I loved them both, the tickets were expensive and a present at the time...happy days.

  • right back to high school with this, and an awesome version of the song on top of it.

  • hIgH...

  • turn it up loud

  • wow! took me back (i think it was the Palladium, NYC), they were awesome...i remember the show so clearly after seeing this.

  • Well done to whoever put this on. As good as i know and remember seeing them back in the day.

  • Yeah, this was on an ep...god, I hope I still have the cassette. Thanks.

  • better than Sinatra, well thats what Mac says.Brilliant clip

  • Jesus cunting Christ .....just listen to it!!

  • Utterly fucking marvellous ....

  • Amazing. I'm 17 again. Thanks!

  • This version was on cassette back in the day. Don't have the tape any longer, but the 12" is still going strong.

"Thank you. Good Night. I'm tired." -awesome

  • Hands down, this version of 'Do It Clean' is the greatest song ever recorded.

  • Always loved this song, never seen the live video untill now.

Thank you for posting it. :)

  • Just awesome,if god came to earth to play guitar it would be in the form of Will Seargant.Too young to know what was going on in 83,I really envy all of you who were there.

  • good song but too much this appreciation for the guitar

  • This was on the B side of The Killing Moon 12" I think. Remember hearing it for the first time and being blown away.

Still trying to get that Will Sergeant sound...

Certainly the best Bunnymen vid on YouTube. No doubt.

Saw them 2 years ago and they were as good as when I saw them in 1985.

  • Best version best band best frontman best guitarist best drummer - nothing has come close to what these guys were. Listen to this song, what compares to this today - they have 4 genres of music in this one live song. God bless the bunnymen. keep dreaming COLDPLAY you will always be an afterthought these guys did it first.

  • who is the other guitarman?

  • the guy in the shorts is Mike Mooney - the most beautiful man in Liverpool in the early 80's

  • Guy in the shorts is Mike Mooney - the most beautiful guy in Liverpoolin the early 80's

  • Those are shorts? I thought he was wearing diapers. Cool either way!

  • live in london 1983

  • Awesome live version saw them in Germany in 87 at rock am ring ian was a true star and Sargents guitar pissed over every other band that weekend

  • WOW! What a great performance....felt like i was there!

  • awesome performance!

  • I had never seen this before! Unbelievable! I have been so in love with Ian Mculloch since i first heard the Bunnymen back in 1982.......never had the pleasure of seeing them in concert....one of my biggest regrets!

  • Yeah! I've been waiting for womeone to post this version! It's the live version from the "Sound of the Echo"/"Never Stop" EP. MTV used to play this all the time when it came out. It was recorded at the Royal Albert Hall. It's the best live version I've ever heard of the song.

  • this is the live track from the never stop ep.... right? It is the best version of this one!

  • I...Love, Love, Love, Love is all you need...this video!

  • Is that some James Brown he's throwin' in there?

Haha. He always throws shit in :)

I love the way he stares almost blankly then smiles, like when you're tired on a subway but see a foxy being :D

    Like a sex machine!

  • Quem curte anos 80, faria de tudo pra estar lá nesse show. Tenho esse vídeo em VHS gravado na MTV. Que beleza...

  • Greatest band ever and one of their best live songs ... thanks for posting this!

  • why doesn't ian just take his shirt off and then sing this song?

  • go william

  • Thanks for posting this, I remember as a kid when it first aired. I wanted to be Will Sergant.

  • ahhh god

  • July 18th 1983, Royal Albert Hall, London. I was there too. I got thrown out during this song. You can just about see it.

  • shivers down my spine time *shudders* takes me back to 1983 ( i was there )

  • This is the first Bunnymen thing I ever saw on MTV back in 1983........my mouth hit the floor! Diehard fan ever since!! :-)

  • Wow, I've been looking for the video where he does some of "Sex Machine" and here it is!!! Ian is still hot; they put on a great show last year.

  • Thank you thank you thank you for posting this video!!!! I have been looking all over YouTube for it! Best band ever - best song ever!!!

  • Hands down, this version of 'Do It Clean' is the greatest song ever recorded. I had it on the b side of their 12" 'Killing Moon' single. I've seen the video of this entire 1981 Royal Albert Hall show. It is absolutely amazing. They were dead on that night.

  • My mistake on the year. This lengendary show was at The Royal Albert Hall on July 18,1983.

  • I agree with your view on this. Gary Mulholland, author of This is Uncool, The 500 Greates Singles Since Punk and Disco, names this concert the one to which he would most like to be transported. I have worn my VHS copy of "Pictures of the Wall" featuring this to death. I can only dream of seeing the whole concert

  • Video of this whole concert was up on the band's website about 5 years ago, but it's long gone from there now. I wish I had thought to download and save it then.

I have read the 'Uncool' book. Really interesting, and very well written. It made me seek out a lot of the songs which I'd never heard of - mostly U.K. hits which were never big in the U.S.

  • The book's far better than most Best of Lists for a number of reasons - chronology, comprehensiveness, context, observation etc. Compare how the black singles in the late 1980s charted highly in the UK while the white counterparts often failed to interest the charts at all. It's as if two tone never happened

  • I just remembered one of my favortite passages from the book was about The Clash's "I fought the Law". I forget what he said, but he pretty much summed up every thing I love about music in a one sentence description of 6 drum beats.

  • This is the first time I've seen this - only had the 12" since 1984 or so. Fockin amazing. I had assumed Rick Astley must have been a Bunnymen fan to cover 'When I fall in love...'! Great video post.
