I have been a Auto Repair Tech for a very long time and I am not ASE Certified. I think those tests would make more sense to me if they were hands on tests. Tests were they give you a vehicle problem and tell you to go fix it. Lets face it I learned being an Auto Repair Tech by working with my hands not taking a written test
ASE certs are nice to have from a PR standpoint & they'll help you get a foot in the door, but the primary requirement from the employer's point of view is: CAN YOU GET THE FIELD PLOWED?!
Even NIASE admits the program only tests for theoretical knowledge. If you can't apply the theory to the hands on situation in question, that knowledge is useless. If you know the theory, you don't have to take a test to prove it, also. The real "test' happens every day as you fix cars right the 1st time!
@filthyphillyboy The problem with this statement is that you must have first have at lest 2 years on the job work experience before you get the certification -so you must already have 'PLOWED THE FIELD' .
@firstwave2 When I say "plow the field" I mean a tech who can really git-er-done so he/she & the company can make money honestly. Just because someone's worked 2 years doesn't necessarily mean they meet the above criteria.
@BBRONKO ...i bet u have a lot of comebacks ..how do you even fill out paperwork with your horrible spelling? i 've seen worse though..there was a guy named tater...he couldn't even read...so with my automotive glass half full you are doing great with only one grammatical error.
ASE is a scam.. ASE makes SO much money from all of this stuff.. There is NO need to charge all the money they do to take a few tests.. I have been working along time at my job and see the ASE people making 99% of the comebacks at are shop. Just say NO to ASE..
I'll tell you where it pays to be ASE certified. Nowhere. that's right if you are certified but you can't turn wrenches what good does that do you. ASEs help you get hired that's about it. you read a book, pass a test and you are certified...but can you replace a timing belt, head gasket, diagnose engine performance problems, or even a check engine light...Think about it ASEs are for us as Auto mechanics to recognize each other and know where we stand!!
before i took the test i wondered if ASE was a right organization. im not the kind of person that like to discuss about the value of the ASE. when i finished college i said to myself that if i passed the college test why cant i do the same with the ASE test?.. i registered to take the test for the first time and came to the test center with all of my knowledge on mind and with what i know and learned at college i passed the test and said, if i did it anyone can do it too.
the point is this. if you really like automotive technology you can make it.. the real professional mechanic takes the time to certified on any requirement by the automotive industry, no matter what.. the mechanic should not judge any test, they should just take it and pass it! THAT'S IT!.
ASE test certifications do not make you any more money. At least at the dealership level. Most places don't pay you anymore for them. It just helps the dealership and the management get their kickbacks. Hell, we have Master Diag Certified techs for Toyota that do nothing but BG flushes all day long. Give them a wheel bearing to diagnose and look out. They are lost. ASE tests only prove how much you know from a book, not how much you can actually fix.
being ASE certified is a big thing. Its kind of like the universal certification that everyone accepts and shows how much you know. getting all the certs make you a ASE Master Tech... and that is something to be very proud of. infact, the average master tech makes from 70-110k a year.

Overated test. Better to get an education instead of taking atest alone!
The industry is pretty simple, anyone can do it even a woman with pink fingernails!
