watch "who killed the electric car" to realize that alternatives have always been present... hybrids that are very slowly coming onto the market are only the tip of the iceberg - full electric power in vehicles has been possible for many years now.

the heritage foundation, with its american flag in the background, loves to tout the benefits of burning it. i suggest they replace it with the logos of the companies they speak for instead.

We need gas prices to go UP not down, so that people realize gas is a scarce resource and stop wasting it. Only then will viable alternatives to driving appear.

Even with ethanol more expensive than gas, with increased use of ethanol gas price should fall, so it evens out. One should also consider that there is no guarantee that gas prices will not double or triple again if we don't curb its use.

Let me see if I can follow your logic. Ethanol is more expensive than gas, so using more of it should lower gas prices?!?

Ethanol simply does not have enough energy content to compete with carbon fuels. This is why you can't get as many mpg from a gal of ethanol that you can from gas, and why you don't power a car with just ethanol, but have mix gas in.

From what I understand, 90% of the energy that 1 gallon of ethanol will provide is burned just to produce it.

I totally agree. According to the economic law of supply and demand, increasing supply to meet demand won't help alleviate the energy shortage (i.e. "lack of supply") that is driving up prices. Or will it? Hmm... maybe instead of calling names you should enroll in Econ101.
