  • Ive seen this movie many times, I got it for Christmas, The reason why I watch it is ONLY because of STEVE ARCHER !!!

  • I love this movie but my least favorite character is Sarah Jane. Shes a ungreatful lil bitch through out the movie then when her mom dies shes all hurt and crying .. Fuck that too late

  • I understand that inadvertedly we are taught that black is something to be ashamed of, not as good as something else, or different and back than it was blatantly taught and institutionalized, HOWEVER,

my mom could storm up to my campus and wave my dirty drowse around and I still wouldn't be ashamed of her (mad definitly); not after the struggle and sacrifice she's done for me. I've never felt ashamed of her no matter what people said. I was too blessed to have one, and I always knew that

  • By the way cant stand Lana turner never have, its something thats not obvious . Its a look out of her eyes em sure she was a nice person an all that just dont care for her as an actress erms lol bad Sheri bad

  • Steve was HOT!

  • Sara Jane don't cry..... how sweet

  • there are do many good film which would not be seen if the YTube not existed.

    thanks.

    cheers!

  • lol this is still one of the dumbest movies ever made!!!!

  • @3909clancy Whats so dumb about it?

  • @DTQ Its racist and plays on every stereotype out there.

  • @3909clancy It's not racist. It's just representing the issues that went on during that time that can still be touched upon today.

  • @harriettewinslow What issues are those??It's a totally racist movie. The hardworking white woman with her loving do well daughter. Then the step& fetch it maid with her manipulative evil daughter.Who never does right cause she is negro.Total white crap. You ask one African American what they think of this movie and see what they say.

  • @3909clancy Well I happen to be that African-American and feel this movie is great in representing the issues that went on during this time. Race was such an issue back in the 1950s just like in the 1930s when the original "Imitation of Life" came out in 1934. It's not meant to be racist. This is how people were like in those days and what people like Sarah Jane had to go through.

  • @harriettewinslow You know what's worse then a liar?A bad one.It figues that a nut job that would lie about there race would like this movie. You just proved my point!!!

  • @3909clancy You're the nut job here. How can you be stupid enough to think that I'm lying about my race just because you want to believe any African-American should find this movie to be racist?

  • @harriettewinslow what the hell r u tlaking about? yes its a movie but ut does reflect the thinking of that time which was racist in fact Hollywood treated all non whites in a depreciating and stereotypical way--yes the movie has a motto or lesson but make no mistake racism is at the heart if the story especially the 1934 version the whole reason that Sarah Jane thoughtn like she did was the society was sick deeply engrained in racism --ignorance my dear is NOT bliss

  • @7harobed A movie that deals with racism doesn't necessarily make it racist. That's what the hell I was talking about.

  • @3909clancy Did you even watch the film? The whole point is that you should never be ashamed of your color, and that not being true to yourself will only hurt yourself & others. It wasn't only Sarah Jane who learnt that, but Lora too. They both mad mistakes (Sarah Jane for rejecting her mother, and Lorna for not being around enough for her daughter) & learnt a lesson in the end.

Is the movie stereotypical? Yes. But it was made in the 50s. Don't expect it to have the same values asa modern film!

  • @3909clancy Interesting thought, but try this one not every black person in the world believes that the white man be holding him down. Try do a study on salvery find out how the black slaves got here...then look at the millions of Chinese that were indentured servants...This film does nothing but bring a subject matter to be looked at. My problem with Lana Turners role is this. wot does she mean 5 months without a job try anything but please stop whining,if anything this movie shows that the

  • @sheriwhispers Who said they did?? What does this have to do with Chinese people??SO I will stop whining after you stop babbling.

  • @3909clancy lol ok so I replied to the wrong person, its the dumb ass you replied to I was trying to address an my point aabt the Chinese is blacks were not the only ppl held in bondage...sorry for the misreply erms

  • @sheriwhispers You are so right sometimes we for get there were Jews and other races that were treated bad also.

  • @3909clancy black woman keeps believing at all cost. Now ones perception is ones reality an you my dear have pointed to wot your mentality is, sad that is.. CIAO !

  • @sheriwhispers And that comment shows yours

  • @3909clancy WAIT ! you called this a racist movie did you not ? an here I thought I miss replied to you lol grow up stop trolling an then just behave yourself educate yourself so you dont sound so ignorant END OF now off with you

  • I cant stand this litttle bitch. It would be different if she was adopted or somethin and she just now met her real mother then I could understand why she would have time adjusting but shes been wit her mother since birth and her behavior is crazy

  • The teachers face: "There are no colored children!"

  • What I can appreciate about this movie is that it shows that a wealthy, upper-class white woman doesn't really fare any better than her black maid. Sexism is also addressed in the movie and how women fall victim to sexist ways of thinking. Both the lady of the house and her maid suffer from unnecessary complexities imposed on them against their will.

  • I defy anyone to go through this movie without sheding a tear.

  • the tan guy with black hair freaking handsome...

  • Can some on get me a tissue, i cant stop bawling...x Thanks DragonflyNoir10 for the excellent posting

  • B E A UTIFUL...

HOW DO U EXPLAIN 2 UR CHILD SHE WAS BORN 2 B HURT!!

  • @sanysele i agree. very deep

  • @sanysele i agree. very deep

  • @sanysele That line really gets to me too.

  • I have a friend that passes and I get mad at her because I think she should be proud to be what she is, but I'm starting to see why she does it. I know many blacks would criticize her for looking white and I know alot of her white friends would not treat her the same anymore.

  • I think Sara Jane was doing what she had to do in order to avoid unnesessary trouble. You really think those other kids would have anything to do with her if they knew she was black? There was not one black child in that classroom. Her mother going into that classroom caused more hardship for that little girl.

  • "How do you explain to your child, she was born to be hurt." So true.

  • @lemonlime1192 That line gets to me too.

  • wow, john gavin was so good looking.

  • @m1sstk Wasn't he fine?..lol

  • This movie is overly deep and this scene about Sarah-Jane sums up 90% of black girls in this Western world/society but its more on a subconscious level

  • @VersatileMusicTV I agree 100%.

  • oh sarah jane being a black woman is a beautiful thing. our beauty excudes from our finger tips and we walk with a grace and elegance. And the world adores you for this...what an intresting character she is...

  • Sara Jane gets me sooo mad! I could never be ashamed of my mom. I feel like punching her!

  • This movie impacted me and I've been looking for it for so long. It is truly a touching story. Juanita Moore. ♥

  • Shouda' left her in the snow! Juanitat Moore is splendid.

  • It´s moving movie, thanks 4 share.

  • "How do you explain to your child that she was born to be hurt" ...I'm speechless

  • where are these wonderfull men and women at today?? has anyone passed away or go on to win any awards for best supporting actor/actress?

  • Sarah Jane cannot escape from black heritage!! We are what we are!!!

  • Still today when you're biracial you're often asked to choose not accepted by one or the other. I can understand how she feels.

  • Well when your hair is like silk and you look that white..

  • This movie has stuck with me ever since kindergarten - I'm now a junior in high school. Thank you so much for posting.

  • The first time I saw this I was around 13, being 18 now the meaning behind the feel sinks in a lot more, this scene is so heart breaking, Sarah Jane's denial of her mother makes me feel so upset.

  • back then it was hard for fair or yellowish skinnded blacks that looked white. they weren't welcomed in negro schools because half of black students hated black students that looked white because it reminded them of a white person. they weren't welcomed in white schools because of their race but they could easily fit in but it would be hard hiding there ethnic background. segregation just made it worst and made it more confusing. some choose to pass to make it easier like sarah jane.

  • thank you for posting this movie :]

I'm mostly asian and very little caucasian and I was born in korea and ever since I moved to america, I've been always felt like an outsider because of my race. I recently started high school and i've felt more like an outcast. I've recently became ashamed of who i was and I tried looking more "white". I've started watching this movie and Imitation of Life has helped me accept more of who i am, not what i pretend to be

  • @AppleMangoPeachBerry Where do you live? Never, never feel ashamed of your race or who your are. Never pretend to be anyone who you are not. I can't believe you feel this way. This is the USA, you are not supposed to feel this way. I am worried that you feel this way. Just remember that this movie is an old movie. Things of today should not make you feel that way. You are young. I am 70 years old, and I have learned so, so much in life. Live your life love, and you will also learn.

  • @AppleMangoPeachBerry I hope my other message got to you. If not, let me know. Anne. If my previous message never got to you, I will write to you again. Anne

  • @AppleMangoPeachBerry I would KILL to be Asian. You have no idea how lucky you are.

Everyone should be proud of their race! (being white is.. boring.. really...)

  • sarah jane doesnt look mixed race at all lol...great movie

  • @KrissyCautious sarah jane need some sense slapped in her head, like slap da blk of her ass lol

  • @KrissyCautious I know people of mixed race that you would find it difficult to tell they weren't 100% white. My brother-in-law for one. People always think he's white.

  • @JayKay62969: Mixed people do not always look black. I know a very dark skinned black women who's daughter looks just like the little girl who played Sara Jane.

  • @rtp1968 Hey, I think you meant this comment for someone else.

  • such beautiful woman back then.. just natural beauty.. didnt have to do so much to be sexy or pretty

  • great movie.. but it can hurt ur heart watching it :[

  • There´s no truth in any of these people. Can´t believe any of it, let alone be moved.

  • Great choice and thanks for sharing this wonderful classic

  • DragonflyNoir I enjoy your the films you posted. Nobody else posts these true representations of life. I remember when I watched the 1996 Secrets & Lies. Your channel introuduced me to these movies. And now I am seein this for the first time and it is wonderful acting and characters that make this movie seem real

  • @oneindachamber

Yes, it's great to see an intelligent, sensitive film about these issues. "Secrets and Lies" is one of the few films in the same league as "Imitation of Life" IMHO.

  • The MOSt powerful line in the entire movie, "how do you explain to your child she was born to be hurt" good God!

  • One of my alltime favorites, thanks for posting!

  • uh uh no tht woman did nt allow tht lil grl disrespect her!

  • NEVER BE ASHAME OF WHO YOU ARE AN WERE YOU COME FROM WE ARE ALL GOD'S CHILDREN'S AN THIS MOVIE IS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF THAT SARA JANE WAS ASHAME THAT HER MOTHER WAS BLACK

  • @niciekaris this is all nice and all...but think back to those days....the times..... how non whites were treated...if you had a black mother....and you looked white.....would you advertise it that you were black? would you want to be the "odd one"? the one everyone hated? as humans we need to feel accepted, even if we say we don't.... it's pretty understandable why Sara Jane acted like that

  • i love watching this film my grandmother made us watch this one saturday an i fell in love with every since but do any one know if u can get this on dvd or video cassette

  • Part of me feels bad for Sarah Jane, the other part goes "what a little bitch"

  • @Kirandera I feel the same way, Sarah Jane is very hateful. Then again I don't know what it's like to look white and be black. Sarah Jane had a mother who loved her dearly and didn't care what others thought , if only Sarah Jane could realize that.

  • @shae1178 but she isn't black she's mixed!

  • @tharowkilla So you don't consider a person black if they have one black parent and one parent of another ethnic background? I was always taught if that were the case a person was considered black however, people can choose ie. a friend of mine who is black and her husband who is white have three children on all of their birth certificates their mother has incicated that they are white even though she is black. I guess it all depends on how a person sees it.

  • @tharowkilla In the movie, sara Jane was black with a light-skined father. Im darkskin, but my half sister is light skin with long hair, and she was called white girl growing up, and I got called black this or black that.Where does it end??

  • thank you for posting this movie..stars had so much talent then, compared to todays so called stars..just loved this movie

  • @TheLindazip true back then people actually needed to have talent to make it. Now Spencer and Heidi can get in for nothing

  • Married so soon.. it seem like only 4 days. lol

  • This is one of my favorite films, too, and John Gavin was so good looking! Thank you for posting it!

  • I think that she did her best work on Madame X.

  • Muito muito obrigada por este filme. Já assisti várias vezes. E pensar que ainda nos tempos atuais encontramos negros mestiços que renegam as suas origens...

  • I recently read an autobiography of Lana Turner.... she was very fascinating..and this is my favorite Lana Turner film. Many thanks for posting this!

  • Thanks for posting this DragonflyNoir - i love this film!

  • You're very welcome!

  • The guy with the black hair (John Gavin) is so sexy for those days back then!!! Lana Turner was lucky!!!

  • @1EightSe7en: I know. He is sooo hot!!

  • @1EightSe7en If you liked John Gavin in this; watch Fannie Hurts other tear jerker Called "Backstreet" with John Gavin & SUsan Hayward
