Also, most of the enlisted men/women are enlisted for the GI bill... so they can go to school. @C0Opd0g If you check the tech manuals for weapons like this, the firing schedule is something like x number of rounds in y number of minutes, then change the barrel due to the heat. Holding the trigger down like that is really not that good for the barrel, as they aren't water cooled. You get some help from the airflow around the barrel from the rotorwash, but not enough to burn through a 600 round burst in one pull without screwing with something.

That is not your grand dady's .50 cal. This is FNH's GAU-21. FN's M3M machine gun fires from open bolt to increase cooling and prevent coockoffs. The gun is very heavily redesign and it actually is GUARANTIED FOR 600 ROUNDS BURST, at that scarry 1100 rounds per minute. The barrels are fine.

Where are you seeing that it's guaranteed for a 600 rd burst? I'd love to check that with the guys who actually build the things. You're outside the firing schedule in the operator's manual, so if the barrel ruptures because of the heat, it's your ass, not the manufacturers.

Guys...Probably the most important difference is that the M2 fires with the bolt closed (forward) while the M3M fires with the bolt open (locked to the rear) . like the M60 and M240. The FN M3M (GAU-21) provides helicopter door gunners [like me  :)] a vast improvement over the GAU-16 (M2).

What you see in this video is not the regular M3. It's FN's M3M. Three important differences between the M3M and the M2 BMG: 1) The new weapon uses an open bolt; 2) has an internal recoil spring, and; 3) a significantly longer barrel life. The first difference means that cook-offs are far less likely to occur while the second point means that the M3M has only a third as much non-compensated recoil as compared to the M2 BMG.

There is definitely recoil. M2's are mounted and balanced on their turrets to help control it. These M3M's take it a step further, the guns basically float on the mounts and have shock absorbers to soften it even more.
