I just think the Mercury Prize tends to alternate in different years between the most obvious and least obvious choice for the prize; one year it's Arctic Monkeys, another it's Franz Ferdinand. Winners aren't picked on merit, they're picked on who the judges feel will be the most "controversial" that year. Just think Speech Debelle album sounds incredibly tired and old-hat.

To be honest guys, the favourite act never wins the mercury - because they have all the exposure and album sales already. It's always the obscure acts with a great album but slipped under the radar with no radio exposure...and I have no problem with that. If Speech Debelle hadn't won a lot of people would be missing out on her exciting music. Whereas everyone knows about Florence's talent already. I know they say that sales has no impact on it but I don't think that's entirely true. :)
